I. Learning Objective:

Carry out variation to application software in accordance to customer/ client

requirements. (TLE_IACSS9- 12ICSS-IIIa-e-31)

Subtasks:
1. Define what disk management software is.
2. Recognize the different disk management software and its functions.
3. Perform step by step procedure in opening Disk Management using
control panel

Time Allotment: 6 hours

II. Key Concepts:

Disk management is a utility software that is used to manage data on disk by

performing functions like partitioning devices, manage drives, disk checking, disk
formatting, etc. They assist the operating system to manage, organize, maintain,
and optimize the functioning of a computer system.

Disk Management Software:

A. Disk Partition
- The act of dividing a hard disk drive (HDD) into multiple logical storage units
referred to as partitions, to treat one physical disk drive as if it were multiple
disks, so that different filesystems can be used on each partition.

How many partitions ca be created on one hard-disk?

Partitions:
1. Primary partition (up to 4)
2. Extended/Logical Partition (maximum 1)

Advantages of multiple partitions:

 Organizing files in drives, separation of the operating system (OS) and program
files from user files.
 Use of multi-boot setups, which allow users to have more than one operating
system.
 Hide and recover partitions

Disadvantages of multiple partitions:

 Decreases the total space available for user storage on the disk.
 Increases disk fragmentation because it lowers the average size of continuous
free blocks on each partition.

Partitioning Operations includes:

a. Create partition
b. Format partition
c. Delete partition

a. Create Partition
Right click “unallocated space” and choose “New Simple Volume” to open the
“New Simple Volume Wizard” dialog box. Then you click “Next” to open the
“Specify Volume Size”, you can choose the desired size of your partition.
Click next to open “Assign Drive Letter or Path” (you can assign the following
letter, provided it’s never been used). Click next to open “Format Partition”
and choose “Format this volume with the following settings:, and check the
box “Perform a quick format”. Click next and then “Finish”

b. Format Partition
If you want the system to recognize the new partition, you have to perform
formatting partition. In “Format Partition”, dialog box, system prompts:
Formatting will erase all data on this volume. To format the volume click,
“OK”. To quit, click “Cancel”, click “OK” to start formatting.

c. Delete Partition
Right click the drive you want to delete and select “Delete Volume” and click
“Yes” in the dialog box.

B. Disk Cleanup
- Disk cleanup tools assist users in freeing up disk space.
- The software scans hard disks to find files that are no longer used and frees
up space by deleting them.

What does it do?

- It will look for file that you did not use it for a long time, and then ask you
whether you’re using it or not, if you say you will not using it and in the future

Author: Rosemarie A. Rabino

School/Station: Bayugan City Senior High School – Stand Alone
Division: BAYUGAN CITY
email address: rosemarie.rabino@deped.gov.ph
it will delete and free that space for you and that increases the memory space
on your disk.

List of all the files that can be deleted:

 Downloaded program files
 Temporary Internet files
 Offline webpages
 File for the Recycle Bin
 Temporary files
 Web client/publisher temporary file
 Compressed old files
 Catalog files for the content indexer
How to delete files using Disk Cleanup:
1. Search for Disk Cleanup (Desktop app) using the search bar and hit Enter
on the keyboard.
2. “Disk Cleanup: Drive Selection” dialog box appears, click the hard disk drive
that you want to clean up and then click OK.
3. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, select the check
boxes for the file types that you want to delete and then click OK.
4. In the message that appears “Are you sure you want to permanently delete
these files?”, click “Delete files”.

C. Disk Check
- Also known as Disk error checking (Chkdsk), performs a scan on your hard
disk, usually after an improper shutdown. It verifies the logical integrity of
your hard drive. If it finds any logical inconsistencies in file system data,
disk error checking performs actions that repair the file system data.
- The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. Chkdsk can repair problems
related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files and directory errors.

Steps on how to run CHKDSK in Windows 10:

1. Open a File Explorer window (click Windows key + E) then click This PC.
Right click on the drive that you want to scan (mostly C: or D: drive) then
click Properties.
2. Properties window for the chosen drive will open, click Tools tab, and then
click Check under the Error checking section.
3. If your computer thinks everything is functioning correctly, it will show a
window stating that “You don’t need to scan this drive”. However, if you will
prefer to run a CHKDSK scan, you can proceed by clicking Scan drive below
this. (Don’t worry, you can’t do any damage to your PC by running this scan
process).
4. CHKDSK function will start checking, depending on the size of your selected
drive, and the amount of data stored on it. The process could take from a
few minutes to 30 mins.
5. If all is good, you will receive the good news that the drive your checking has
been completed and no errors were found. But, if the CHKDSK scan does
find errors, it will attempt to fix what it can.

D. Disk Defragmenter
- Disk management utility that increases file access speeds by rearranging
fragmented files on contiguous locations.

What does it do?

- Defragmentation reduces the amount of fragmented files on your hard drive. It
recognizes related data files and puts them in the same physical location on
your hard drive.

Note: You only have to do a defrag on mechanical hard drives because mechanical
hard drives have disks that spin, so that the heads can read and write. The solid
state drives or SSDs do not require doing a defrag, because SSDs have no moving
parts. The computer can just pick and choose whatever file it needs, regardless of
which memory chip the file is located on.

Defragmenting in Windows 10

1. In the search bar in the Start menu or on the taskbar type “Defragment and
Optimize Drivers,” and then click.

2. Select “Optimize” to begin.
