I. Learning Objective:

Access software updates in accordance with manufacturer’s

recommendations and requirements. (TLE_IACSS9- 12ICSS-IIIa-e-31)

Subtasks:

II. Key Concepts:

In this time of pandemic, where ECQ, GCQ, MECQ were implemented by the
government most of us spent our time in gadgets like smartphones, tablet, laptop,
computer etc. While using it, a message suddenly pops up saying, “software update
is available”. You click “cancel” instead of “install”. This is our common practice,
because software updates can take time and thinking, it’s not that important. But
this is a mistake, because hackers could access your personal account if you don’t
update.

What is Software Update?

 It is a new improved software which replaces older version of the same

software. This is true in any gadgets that has software, like our smartphones
and computers. In most cases, software updates often occurs in our browser
and operating system. They should be regularly updated.

We usually experience software updates most of the time in our smartphones

in which the applications that we installed notify there is an update available
on that particular apps.

A security update is common to our operating system in which it will protect

your computer against viruses and hackers. To ensure the safety of your
system against threats, it is advised to install Security updates.

SECURITY FLAWS Protect against new-found security risks.

- After updating your software, you notice a bit difference in the appearance of
the menu of the application it is more improve and better compatibility with
other applications.

- Upon developing a certain software it really has bugs, every software has bug we
cannot deny it, that is why there is software update to fix those bugs that were
done during the creation of the software.

- Protecting our personal information is our goal in using any devices and
connecting to the internet. The hackers would attack on the vulnerability of the
software that we are using especially our browsers. That is why the software
update is recommended.

What should be updated?

- Software (Operating System, Application Software, Browsers, Drivers) – these are

usually updated and free in the internet.

- Hardware – any hardware that is not compatible to the current application

should be updated and even upgraded.

What happens if I don't update?

 Your computer get errors, because there are flaws in every software upon
developing. Updates can fix it.
 Updates also patch security holes, if you don't update your information may be
compromised.
 Conflicts may happen and cause problems with other programs.

Ways to update a software program:

There are diverse ways in updating a software program and there is no standard on
how it is to be done, this depends on user in which way it should be access easily.

Here are some ways:

1. You can update your software automatically when it is connected to the

internet, just check for updates when it is first run. This is mostly used.

2. Pressing your function key F1 or clicking of Help menu from the file menu could
help you check for updates.
3. The use of OEM software, it allows you to introduce solutions without high cost
of the software development. Often include assistant programs to assist with
checking and downloading any updates pre-installed programs.

How long is it to update?

The time can vary depending on the speed of your internet connection and the
server providing the update. But, in most cases if it is newly release it may take
longer to complete.

What is Software Upgrade and Software Update?

Software Upgrade

- It is the latest version of the software. It is different from the previous version, it comes with
newly created improvements that change the application or even the operating system.

Example: Windows 7 – Windows Vista ; Windows 8.1 – Windows 10.

For more, you can surf in the net about the different upgraded software of operating system.

Software Update

- It is the higher version of the application that you already have, it is usually free to download.
In which it gives you better experience than what you already have.

For more, you can surf in the net about the different updated software versions of operating
system.

Example: Windows 7 – Windows NT 4.0 ; Windows 8 Version 6.3

What’s the difference?

An update is commonly free and a newly improve of the current version of the
software. An update needs your existing software. While an upgrade is a new
version of the software, and usually you have to pay, it may involve buying. By
this, system upgrade is not commonly practice because it is costly.

What are update versions?

A software program that is updated it changes the version of the program to help
identify the applied fixes. Every company has its unique way in assigning their
versions.

A version identifier often comes in a word, a number or both. And when it is

identified numerically, it should be in increasing order.

Types of Version Numbers:

Version number: 9.12.56 (numbers are just made as example)

1. LTS (Long Term Support) – this is a major release and supported for years, it
would be incremented if there is a fundamental change of framework.
(In our example 9.12.56, 9 is the LTS it would be change to 10. (9.XX.XX –
10.XX-XX)

2. Feature release – this is a minor release with new features to the existing
feature. Just increment 1 if there is new release. In this case we have 9.12.XX –
9.13.XX. Once a new feature is release, the old one is no longer supported. The
feature release will only support the newest LTS.

3. Maintenance release – often contains smaller improvements to existing features.

Just like the 2 release, just increment 1. In this case 9.12.56 – 9.12.57

Browsers and operating software has the most updated versions.

Steps in Updating Windows 10 Computer

Note: You need Internet Connection in Updating your Computer!

1. Click the Windows icon in your task bar to open.

2. Click on Settings.

4. The Windows Update appears, Click on Check for updates.
(The updates takes long depending on how many updates you have, and the
speed of your computer. Make sure that you don’t turn off your computer while
updating, and when a dialog box comes out “restart your computer” you need to
restart, for another updates to come in.) There cases that the Windows update
fails, one of the reason is the incompatibility of the software, it may have old
version of a program that is preventing the Windows Update to install. If this
occurs, just uninstall the program causing the error, or visit the developer’s
website to make sure you have the latest version installed, and then try
installing the update again.

What if your Updates just pause?

If you don’t see any progress they’re all just pending or waiting, try restarting your
computer again. But for some reasons your updates are not going through, you
restarted a couple of times and there’s a dialog that says “this update can’t
process” Then run the “Updates Troubleshooter”.

1. Click on Window button and type Troubleshoot Settings. Click on

Troubleshoot settings and a Troubleshoot window appear.

2. Click on Additional troubleshooters. And click on Windows Update. And that

starts your troubleshooter.

Note: The chances of something going wrong in updating your software are just
slight, so as long as you don't turn off your machine during an update you have
nothing to worry about.
