Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)

● It is the average or the mean volume of a single red cell

1 milli = 103 micro
● MCV = _ PCV_ __
RBCs count 1 micro = 103 nano
1 nano = 103 pico
Example 1 pico = 103 femtolitre
If PCV = 45 % = (45ml / 100 ml)
1 milli = 1012 femto
RBCs count = 5 million/mm3 Find out the MCV:
1 ml = 1000 mm3
MCV = 45 ml/100ml = 45 X 1012 (Femto /100ml) (45x1012)
5X106 /mm3 (5X106) X (103) X (102)/100ml = (5X1011)

MCV = 45 x 10 = 90 femtolitre .

● Normal range of MCV: 80 – 100 Femtolitres

● Abnormal high result ( Macrocytic anemia )

- Folate deficiency and pernicious anemia
(Pernicious anemia is one of megaloblastic anemias caused by impaired absorption
of vitamin B12 because of a lack of intrinsic factor (IF) in gastric secretions)

● Abnormal low result ( Microcytic anemia )

- Iron deficiency anemia and Thalassemia
( Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by less hemoglobin and
fewer red blood cells )
