Introduction to Human Resources (HRES 2201)

Assignment 2: Recruitment Process (15%)

Assignment 2 Overview:
Recruitment is an essential component of organizational success. As human resources
professionals, it is important to understand the recruitment process. In this assignment, you
will be demonstrating your understanding of recruitment from two perspectives: first, a
human resource professional for Part 1 (discussion board) and as a manager for Part 2
(written assignment). You will also utilize the Alberta Human Rights Act and apply it in
working through the recruitment process, including to a workplace through creating a job
posting.

Grade Breakdown:
1. Part 1: Discussion Board (5%)
2. Part 2: Recruitment Plan (10%)
Combined, these two parts total the overall 15% weighting of this assignment.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
1. Explain the role of Human Resources within an organization
2. Describe how each functional human resources process and practice relates to the
organizational vision and strategy
3. Apply the seven human resources processes and practices to business
scenarios

Instructions:
There are two parts to this assignment. Both must be completed.
Part 1: Discussion Board:
Select an entry-level position within your area of study (an entry level position is the first
realistic position after graduating from the Chiu School of Business). This position will
be general in scope, and you will be reporting to a mid-level manager.
Submit a discussion board post overviewing the job design of an entry-level job title
of your choice. You can reference existing job postings online for general research;
however, your draft job design must be your own ideas and in your own words. Be
sure to incorporate competencies that are required in the workplace. Reference any
external material used.
From the perspective of an HR professional, create an outline for what the job will
look like, some of the tasks that will be conducted, competencies that will be required,
and the educational requirement. This outline will be developed into a job posting in the
second part of the assignment. In the discussion board, you can post your ideas in a
1
combination of full sentences and bullet points.
In your discussion post, please include:
• The job title
• 2-3 line description of the position
• Minimum education requirements
• Three job tasks that will be conducted
• Seven competencies, which must include:
o Two behaviours that are expected to be displayed in this position
o Two skills – one soft and one technical
o Three abilities problem-solving, etc.)
• Describe two job design practices that can empower or engage the job
candidate in their role
After making your post, reply to two other students’ posts.
Each of your replies should include:
• Impression of their job design – indicate your thoughts on the job and support
with at least two detailed comments
• Comment on the alignment of the job title to the outlined job description
• Provide feedback on tasks identified – are they applicable for an entry-level
position? Are they descriptive so you can understand the position expectations?
• Give positive/constructive feedback on their seven competencies for alignment to
the job title (will these competencies align with the job title and job description?)
• Assess the minimum education required for the job title – are they appropriate?
• Assess the two suggested job design practices - will they empower a candidate?

Part 2: Recruitment Plan:

After receiving feedback from your peers, create a job posting as a step in the
recruitment process, from a manager’s perspective. In addition to creating the posting,
you need to research two rights that are explained in the Alberta Human Rights Act to
ensure that you are meeting legislative requirements. You need to plan where you will
carry out your recruitment process to ensure you are reaching the right pool of candidates
for the job you are posting.
You must:
• Research the Alberta Human Rights Act. Summarize the Act and explain why it is
important for a manager to be familiar with this Act. Then, select two rights you
would like to focus on when starting to plan for the recruitment process within the
workplace. Your attention to these rights should direct your wording in the job
posting and where you will advertise the job posting to reach the candidate pool
that you plan to inform about the available position.
• Plan the recruitment process from a manager’s perspective. You will be expected
to advertise internally and externally for the position that you selected for Part I.
Imagine the corporate strategy for this organization, at which you are a manager,
is to align the job posting to the purpose of the organization. You need to think
about the skills, competencies and job design practices that will align with the job
and the corporate culture (personality) of the organization. In this organization
2
you are assuming that both internal and external recruitment activities will be
conducted simultaneously to solicit the best pool of candidates.
• Identify two ways you will inform the existing employees (internal recruitment)
that a job opportunity is available. You will also be expected to advertise
externally and you will identify three specific sources that you will use to
advertise the job posting. Provide a rationale for why you have decided to use
these three specific external sources, remembering to align what you are focusing
on and the level of employee you are hoping to attract.
• Create a job posting from a manager’s perspective. You should research online
postings and job posting templates to provide a framework for the format that you
follow. You also need to read the feedback that your job design outline received
from your peers in Part I of this assignment. Your job posting will need to:
• Identify the entry-level job title
• Describe the job title in two or three sentences
• List the tasks that will be conducted and the competencies that you are
seeking from the candidates
• You will end the job posting with two or three sentences to describe the
organization’s culture.
• Describe and provide rationale of the job design practices that will
engage employees in the existing role. This section should include the
suggestions that you recommended to build employee empowerment
Guidelines:
1. Part 1:
• Discussion Board Thread: 200-300 words in length
• Discussion Board Replies: 150-200 words in length for each of your
two replies
• Each aspect of Part 1 is completed in the D2L Discussion area
Part 2:
• Written Assignment will be 750 – 1,000 words long

clearly identified using APA 7th Edition procedures.”
• Part 2 is submitted in the D2L DropBox

Turnitin:
All assignment submissions are run through Turnitin, which is an anti-plagiarism software
used by Bow Valley College. This is automatically set up and runs in the background of
DropBox, you do not need to download any software. Simply upload your assignment to
the D2L DropBox and your assignment will be used with Turnitin.

When you submit your assignment, it will be run through Turnitin. Turnitin is a web-based
software that checks the assignment against its database of materials that contain other
learners’ work, as well as external material. It is recommended to use the Turnitin tool to
make improvements to your assignment before submitting the final version. Please always
focus on the due date of the assignment to allow yourself time to use the tool and make
changes before submitting your final version before the due date.

A report will be generated from Turnitin after submitting which is useful in editing and
reviewing your assignment. The report will overview incorrect referencing, too many
quotes, paraphrasing, etc. If the Turnitin report shows a high percentage of matching text,
this is an opportunity to review and edit your assignment to ensure you are properly citing
your work and upload to Turnitin again. After editing, you can upload your assignment to
4
Turnitin a second time – the software will know not to match your second submission to
your first. Please wait at least 24 hours before submitting the second draft.

Once you have submitted your final version of the assignment, there is nothing you need to
do – the most recent submission (last submission you posted) is the one which will be
graded.
