I‟ll start by writing about the time when my father

man. He spent his days walking on the beach or

on the cliffs. When he came back, he always

asked, “Did any sailors visit the inn today?” At

first, we thought he wanted to find some other
‫ رؼغ‬ٍٝ‫س ػ‬ٛ‫ذ حٌؼؼ‬٠‫ش‬٠ ٗٔ‫ حػظمذٔخ أ‬، ‫ش‬٠‫حٌزذح‬
sailors, but later we realised that he didn‟t want

any sailors to find him.

In the evenings, the Captain sometimes told
‫خص‬٠‫خًٔخ كىخ‬١‫خزشٔخ وخرظٓ أك‬٠ ْ‫ وخ‬، ‫حٌّغخء‬
stories about his time at sea. My father was

worried that nobody would want to visit the inn

because they would be frightened by the
‫ أػظمذ‬ٟٕٕ‫ ٌى‬، ٓ‫ْ ِٓ لظض وخرظ‬ٛ‫خخف‬١‫ع‬
Captain‟ stories, but I think people liked them.
‫ حٌٕضي ٌؼذس‬ٟ‫ حٌىخرظٓ ف‬ٟ‫٘خ رم‬ٛ‫أْ حٌٕخط أكز‬
The Captain stayed at the inn for months. He did
ٗ‫ش ٌغشفظ‬١‫حي اػخف‬ِٛ‫ أ‬ٞ‫ؼطٕخ أ‬٠ ٌُ .‫ش‬ٙ‫أش‬
not give us any more money for his room and
‫ طزخف‬ٟ‫ذ ف‬٠‫ ؽٍذ حٌّض‬ٍٝ‫ ػ‬ٞ‫حٌذ‬ٚ ‫ـشإ‬٠ ٌُٚ
my father did not dare to ask him for more.
ٍٝ‫ ػ‬ٟ‫ ر٘ذ حٌىخرظٓ ٌٍظّش‬، َ‫خ‬٠‫أكذ حأل‬
One morning, the Captain went for a walk along
the beach. I was helping my mother to make
‫ حإلفطخس‬ٝ‫ ف‬ٟ‫حٌذط‬ٚ ‫ وٕض أعخػذ‬.‫حٌشخؽت‬
ً ‫فخ‬١‫ وخْ ٔل‬.‫ حٌٕضي‬ٌٝ‫ػٕذِخ دخً سؿً آخش ا‬
breakfast when another man walked into the
inn. He was thin and pale, with three fingers on
.ٜ‫غش‬١ٌ‫ذٖ ح‬٠ ٝ‫ٌٗ ػالػش أطخرغ ف‬ٚ ، ‫شخكزًخ‬
his left hand. He sat down and asked, “Is this ‫ٌش ٕ٘خ‬ٚ‫ "ً٘ ٘زٖ حٌطخ‬، ‫عؤي‬ٚ ‫ؿٍظ‬
table here for my friend Bill?” "‫ً؟‬١‫ ر‬ٟ‫م‬٠‫ٌظذ‬
‫ٌش‬ٚ‫لٍض اْ حٌطخ‬ٚ ً١‫ ال أػشف ر‬ٟٕٔ‫أخزشطٗ أ‬
I told him that I did not know Bill and said that

“Well, my friend Bill might say that he‟s the ْ‫لذ أ‬٠ٚ ٗٙ‫ؿ‬ٚ ٝ‫ٗ ٔذرش ف‬٠‫ "ٌذ‬."ٓ‫حٌىخرظ‬
Captain,” he said. “He has a scar on his face ‫؟‬ٛ٘ ‫ ً٘ ٘زح‬.‫ش‬٠‫ كىخ‬ٞٚ‫ش‬٠"

“Yes,” I said. “He‟s gone for a walk.” ‫؟‬ٝ‫ك ِش‬٠‫ ؽش‬ٞ‫ أ‬ٝ‫"ف‬
“Which way did he walk?” he asked.
‫حٔظظش‬ٚ ً‫لف حٌشؿ‬ٚ .‫ حٌشخؽت‬ٛ‫أششص ٔل‬
I pointed towards the beach. The man stood up
and waited by the door for the Captain to return. ٓ‫د حٌىخرظ‬ٛ‫ؼ‬٠ ٝ‫ػٕذ حٌزخد كظ‬
When the Captain saw the man, he looked pale ‫ رذح شخكزًخ‬، ً‫ حٌمزطخْ حٌشؿ‬ٜ‫ػٕذِخ سأ‬
and ill. ‫ؼًخ‬٠‫ِش‬ٚ.
“Black Dog!” the Captain said.
“That‟s right,” he replied. “I‟ve found my friend "ٓ‫ؽ!" لخي حٌىخرظ‬ٚ‫رالن د‬.
Bill! We‟ve had a lot of adventures since I lost
ً١‫ؿذص ر‬ٚ ‫ "ٌمذ‬."‫ق‬١‫ "٘زح طل‬:‫أؿخد‬
these fingers!”
‫ش ِٓ حٌّغخِشحص ِٕز‬١‫! كذػض ٌٕخ حٌىؼ‬ٟ‫م‬٠‫طذ‬
I left them to talk. Then suddenly there were loud
"!‫أْ فمذص ٘زٖ حألطخرغ‬
shouts and both men stood up and ran outside.
The Captain had a sword and then I saw Black ‫ ػُ فـؤس وخٔض ٕ٘خن‬.‫ح‬ٛ‫ظلذػ‬١ٌ ُٙ‫طشوظ‬
Dog running away with blood on his arm. The ٌٝ‫ح ح‬ٚ‫ؿش‬ٚ ْ‫لف حٌشؿال‬ٚ ‫ش‬١ٌ‫لخص ػخ‬١‫ط‬
man continued running until we could not see ُ‫ ػ‬، ‫ف‬١‫ وخْ ِغ حٌىخرظٓ ع‬.‫خخسؽ حٌّٕضي‬
him. .َ‫ رسحػٗ د‬ٍٝ‫ػ‬ٚ ‫شد‬ٙ٠ ‫ؽ‬ٚ‫ض رالن د‬٠‫سأ‬
The Captain walked back into the inn. He ِٓ ٓ‫ ٌُ ٔظّى‬ٝ‫ كظ‬ٜ‫ حٌـش‬ٟ‫حعظّش حٌشؿً ف‬
looked ill and suddenly he fell over. I thought ٗ‫ظ‬٠‫سإ‬
perhaps he was hurt from the fight. At that ‫ؼخ‬٠‫ ِش‬ٚ‫زذ‬٠ ْ‫ وخ‬.‫ حٌٕضي‬ٌٝ‫ حٌىخرظٓ ا‬ٝ‫ِش‬
moment, the doctor arrived to see my father ِٓ ‫ذ‬١‫ حػظمذص حٔٗ سرّخ أط‬.‫فـؤس عمؾ‬ٚ
‫ذ‬١‫طً حٌطز‬ٚ ، ‫ طٍه حٌٍلظش‬ٟ‫ف‬ٚ .‫حٌظؼخسن‬
who was sick.
‫غ‬٠‫ حٌّش‬ٞ‫حٌذ‬ٚ ‫ش‬٠‫ٌشإ‬
“Help us, Dr Livesy! The Captain is hurt!” said my
mother. ْ‫ ا‬ٟ‫حٌذط‬ٚ ‫! لخٌض‬ٟ‫فغ‬٠‫س ال‬ٛ‫خ دوظ‬٠ ‫عخػذٔخ‬
The doctor looked at him and said, “He is not ‫ذ‬١‫!حٌىخرظٓ لذ أط‬
hurt, but he is very ill. Help me to take him ، ٜ‫ظذ رؤر‬٠ ٌُ" :‫لخي‬ٚ ‫ذ‬١‫ٗ حٌطز‬١ٌ‫ٔظش ا‬
upstairs.” ٗ‫ حططلخر‬ٟ‫ ف‬ٟٔ‫ عخػذ‬.‫ش‬٠‫غ ٌٍغخ‬٠‫ٌىٕٗ ِش‬
We took the Captain up to his bedroom and the ٍٞٛ‫ حٌطخرك حٌؼ‬ٌٝ‫ا‬
doctor gave him some medicine. The Captain ٖ‫أػطخ‬ٚ ِٗٛٔ ‫ غشفش‬ٌٝ‫أخزٔخ حٌىخرظٓ ا‬
stayed in bed, but he was not quiet. He told me ٟ‫ حٌىخرظٓ ف‬ٟ‫ رم‬.‫ش‬٠ٚ‫ذ رؼغ حألد‬١‫حٌطز‬
about his travels at sea, and said that he had ٓ‫ ػ‬ٟٔ‫ أخزش‬.‫ىٓ ٘خدث ًخ‬٠ ٌُ ٕٗ‫ ٌى‬، ‫ش‬٠‫حٌغش‬
something which people wanted. ٖ‫ذ‬٠‫ش‬٠ ‫ج ًخ‬١‫ٗ ش‬٠‫لخي اْ ٌذ‬ٚ ، ‫ حٌزلش‬ٟ‫سكالطٗ ف‬
“Black Dog is not as bad as some of the other ‫حٌٕخط‬
men.” he said, “They all want to find me. Tell me " ‫ج ًخ وزؼغ حٌشؿخي‬١‫ظ ع‬١ٌ ‫ؽ‬ٚ‫رالن د‬
if you see them!” ُٙ‫ظ‬٠‫ ارح سأ‬ٟٔ‫" حخزش‬.ٓ٠‫خش‬٢‫" !ح‬
That evening, my father died. I felt terrible and ‫ شؼشص‬.ٞ‫حٌذ‬ٚ ٟ‫ف‬ٛ‫ ط‬، ‫ رٌه حٌّغخء‬ٟ‫ف‬
forgot all about the strange things that the ‫خء‬١‫ء ػٓ حألش‬ٟ‫ض وً ش‬١‫ٔغ‬ٚ ‫ء‬ٛ‫رخٌغ‬
Captain told me. ٓ‫خ حٌىخرظ‬ٙ‫ ر‬ٟٔ‫خزش‬٠ ْ‫ وخ‬ٟ‫زش حٌظ‬٠‫حٌغش‬
Then, a week later, I saw a blind man coming ‫ش‬١‫غ‬٠ ّٝ‫ض سؿالً أػ‬٠‫ سأ‬، ‫ع‬ٛ‫رؼذ٘خ رؤعز‬ٚ
down the road towards the inn. He stopped ،‫لف خخسؽ حٌزخد‬ٛ‫ ط‬.‫ حٌٕضي‬ٛ‫ك ٔل‬٠‫ حٌطش‬ٍٝ‫ػ‬
outside the door when he was near and asked, ٓ‫ّى‬٠ ً٘ ‫ٓ أٔخ؟‬٠‫ "أ‬، ٌٟٕ‫ػٕذِخ حلظشد عؤ‬
“Where am I? Will a kind person help me?” ‫ُ؟‬٠‫ سؿً وش‬ٟٔ‫غخػذ‬٠ ْ‫ح‬

“You are at the Admiral Benbow Inn in Black Hill ً١٘ ‫ رالن‬ٟ‫ ف‬ٛ‫شحي رٕز‬١ِ‫ فٕذق حأل‬ٟ‫"أٔض ف‬
Cove,” I told him. ٗ‫حٔخ أخزشط‬، "‫ف‬ٛ‫و‬
At that moment, he grabbed my hand. ٞ‫ذ‬١‫ أِغه ر‬، ‫ طٍه حٌٍلظش‬ٟ‫ف‬.
“Take me to the Captain!” he said. "!ٓ‫ حٌىخرظ‬ٌٝ‫ ا‬ٟٔ‫"خز‬
“Take me to him now!” "ْ٢‫ٗ ح‬١ٌ‫ ا‬ٟٔ‫"خز‬
I walked with the blind man into the inn and ٗ‫أخزط‬ٚ ‫ حٌٕضي‬ٟ‫ ف‬ّٝ‫ض ِغ حٌشؿً حألػ‬١‫ِش‬
took him to the Captain. The Captain looked ‫ رذح حٌىخرظٓ ِٕذ٘شًخ ؿذًح ػٕذِخ‬.ٓ‫ حٌىخرظ‬ٌٝ‫ا‬
very surprised to see him. .ٖ‫سح‬
“Now, Bill, stay where you are. I can hear you. ‫غ‬١‫ أعظط‬.‫غ أٔض‬١‫ ك‬ٝ‫ حرم‬، ً١‫خ ر‬٠ ْ٢‫"ح‬
Take this.” He then put something in the
‫ذ‬٠ ٟ‫ج ًخ ف‬١‫ػغ ش‬ٚ ُ‫ " ػ‬.‫ خز ٘زح‬.‫عّخػه‬
Captain‟s hand, turned round and left.
‫غخدس‬ٚ ‫حعظذحس‬ٚ ، ٓ‫حٌىخرظ‬
The Captain looked at what the man gave him.
.ً‫ ِخ أػطخٖ حٌشؿ‬ٌٝ‫ٔظش حٌمزطخْ ا‬
“Ten o‟clock!” he said. “I have time!”
Then the Captain suddenly fell to the floor. He

was dead.

I found my mother and we talked about what .ٍٗ‫ـذ أْ ٔفؼ‬٠ ‫طلذػٕخ ػّخ‬ٚ ِٟ‫ؿذص أ‬ٚ ‫ٌمذ‬
we should do. We knew that the Captain had a ٗ‫ غشفظ‬ٟ‫ق ف‬ٚ‫ٗ طٕذ‬٠‫وٕخ ٔؼٍُ أْ حٌىخرظٓ ٌذ‬
box in his room and it probably had money in it. ّٝ‫ حٌشؿً حألػ‬.‫ رٌه‬ٟ‫ٗ ِخي ف‬٠‫سرّخ وخْ ٌذ‬ٚ
The blind man and Black Dog probably wanted

this. I thought about taking the box to Dr Livesy,
but I did not want to leave my mother. We knew ٌُ ٟٕٕ‫ ٌى‬، ٟ‫فغ‬٠‫س ال‬ٛ‫ حٌذوظ‬ٌٝ‫ق ا‬ٚ‫حٌظٕذ‬
that we were in a danger. We decided to go to ٟ‫ وٕخ ٔؼشف إٔٔخ ف‬.ٟ‫حٌذط‬ٚ ‫ ِغخدسس‬ٟ‫أسغذ ف‬
the nearest village and ask our neighbours for ْ‫ح‬ٚ ‫ش‬٠‫ ألشد لش‬ٌٝ‫ لشسٔخ حٌز٘خد ا‬.‫خطش‬
help guarding the inn. ‫ كشحعش‬ٟ‫شحٕٔخ حٌّغخػذس ف‬١‫ٔطٍذ ِٓ ؿ‬
However, none of the people in the village ٞ‫شغذ أ‬٠ ٌُ ، ‫رخٌشغُ ِغ رٌه‬ٚ ‫حٌٕضي‬
wanted to help us. They did not come back with ‫ح‬ٛ‫شؿؼ‬٠ ٌُ .‫غخػذٔخ‬٠ ْ‫ش ح‬٠‫ حٌمش‬ٟ‫شخض ف‬
us, but one man went to tell Dr Livesy. Another ‫س‬ٛ‫خزش حٌذوظ‬١ٌ ‫ ٌىٓ سؿالً ر٘ذ‬، ‫ِؼٕخ‬
man said that we could have his gun. ْٛ‫ى‬٠ ْ‫ّىٓ أ‬٠ ٗٔ‫لخي سؿً آخش ا‬ٚ .ٟ‫فغ‬٠‫ال‬
It was dark when we returned to the inn. We .ٗ‫ِؼٗ عالك‬
found the key to the box in the captain‟s jacket. ‫ ٌمذ‬.‫ ٔضي‬ٌٝ‫ال ػٕذِخ ػذٔخ ا‬١ٌ ٛ‫وخْ حٌـ‬
I also saw the message that the blind man gave .ْ‫ عظشس حٌمزطخ‬ٟ‫ق ف‬ٚ‫ؿذٔخ ِفظخف حٌظٕذ‬ٚ
to the Captain. It said, “You have until ten ً‫ أػطخ٘خ حٌشؿ‬ٟ‫ؼًخ حٌشعخٌش حٌظ‬٠‫ض أ‬٠‫سأ‬
o‟clock tonight.” ‫ حٌغخػش‬ٝ‫ه كظ‬٠‫ "ٌذ‬، ‫ لخي‬.ٓ‫ ٌٍىخرظ‬ّٝ‫حألػ‬
We went upstairs and my mother soon opened ."‫ٍش‬١ٌٍ‫حٌؼخششس ح‬
the box with the key. Inside, we found some ‫عشػخْ ِخ فظلض‬ٚ ٍٞٛ‫ حٌطخرك حٌؼ‬ٌٝ‫ر٘زٕخ ا‬
clothes, some guns, some papers and other ‫ؿذٔخ‬ٚ ً‫ حٌذحخ‬ٟ‫ ف‬.‫ق رخٌّفظخف‬ٚ‫ حٌظٕذ‬ِٟ‫أ‬
things. We also found a bag with some coins ‫رؼغ‬ٚ ‫رؼغ حألعٍلش‬ٚ ‫رؼغ حٌّالرظ‬
inside.
‫زش‬١‫ؼخ كم‬٠‫ؿذٔخ أ‬ٚ .ٜ‫خء أخش‬١‫أش‬ٚ ‫سحق‬ٚ‫حأل‬
“We only have time until ten o‟clock,” I said.

“Let‟s leave before the blind man and Black Dog

“I‟ll only take the money which the Captain

papers from the box, too. We walked as quickly ِٓ ‫سحق‬ٚ‫لشسص أخز حأل‬ٚ ، ‫لفٕخ ٌٍّغخدسس‬ٚ
as we could back towards the village, but as we ‫ّىٕٕخ‬٠ ‫ٕخ رؤعشع ِخ‬١‫ ِش‬.‫ؼًخ‬٠‫ق أ‬ٚ‫حٌظٕذ‬
walked, we heard the sound of people in the ، ‫ش‬١‫ّٕخ وٕخ ٔغ‬١‫ٌىٓ ر‬ٚ ، ‫ش‬٠‫ حٌمش‬ٛ‫ٓ ٔل‬١ٙ‫ِظـ‬
road behind us.

“Take the money and run,” said my mother. “I‟m

too weak to continue.”

I did not want to leave her, so we stopped under
a bridge, where we could hide in the dark.
