New Teams are 4-D teams: diverse, dispersed, digital, and dynamic(Haas&Mortensen, 2016)

Teaming - A fluid network of interconnected individuals working in temporary teams on

improvement, problem solving, and innovation. A fluctuating leadership entails learning to relate to
others better and learning to make decisions based on the integration of different perspectives.

1 Design: How do leaders design the team—the why, who, what, when, and how—to set the
conditions that maximize its chances of success? 2 Launch: How do leaders make sure that members
are OK with their task, with each other, and with their understanding of team norms? 3 Process
Management: How do leaders create a supportive context – managing awareness of progress and
challenges, maintaining balance, and intervening at key points in a team’s life – to keep positive
trends and correct negative ones? •J. Richard Hackman: design had the greatest influence on
effectiveness, followed by team launch. Process management, while important, is never sufficient to
make up for poor design and inadequate launch.
