a) Human language is the most sophisticated means of communication. Discuss.

“... Language is the external manifestation of the minds of people. Their language
is their soul, and their soul is their language.”

Wilhelm von Humboldt.

What is Language? – “Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for

human communication” (Wardhaugh 1972, P.3). “It is purely human and non- instinctive
method of communicating ideas, emotions, and desires by means of voluntarily
produced symbols” (Sapir 1921, P.7).

What do we use language for? Language serves primarily for the expression of
thought. Through language, we communicate, exchange knowledge, express
our identities, and show our emotions. It is central to all our lives and is considered the
cultural tool that sets humans apart from any other species. (Asoulin, 2016)

Communication types. - Communication between human beings can be by means of

language, which is referred to as linguistic communication, or it can be in other ways
such as laughing, smiling, and shrieking, which are non-linguistic communication.
Language is superior to other tools (non-verbal human communication) as it involves
the ability of the mind to figure out a complex and use it. (Arkansas State Online, 2019)
(Eifring and Theil, 2005)

Animal VS Human communication - All creatures communicate in some way. So

communication itself is not a distinctive feature of the language. When a dog
barks at another dog, they are communicating. When your pet dog barks at you, it
is communicating with you. We can take a closer look at the features of the
human language and link them to animal communication in order to see the
difference between them.
