Assay of Ferrous Sulphate by using N/ 10 Potassium Permanganate

Experiment:-4
Aim: Determination of Percentage purity of Ferrous Sulphate using N/10 KMnO4 solution

Theory:

The quantitative estimations of a number of pharmaceutical substances may be carried out by

using Potassium permanganate solution. The vital application of Potassium permanganate as a
potential oxidizing agent in an acidic medium mainly rests on the reactions designated by the
following equations:

2 KMnO4 + 3 H2SO4 ⟶ K2SO4 + 2 MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]

Potassium permanganate reacts with iron(II) salts according to the following oxidation-reduction
equation

5 X (Fe2+  Fe3+ + e-)          oxidation

MnO4 + 8H+ + 5e- Mn2+ + 4H2O          reduction
-
___________________________________________________________________________

MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+    Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O          overall

process

By determining the exact mass of the FAS samples taken, and from the volume of KMnO4
solution required to titrate those samples, the exact molarity of the KMnO4 solutions could be
calculate.

Materials & equipment:

Ferrous Sulfate Heptahydrate (FeSO4, 7H2O=278.02), Ferrous Sulphate (FeSO4, 151.8)

Ferrous Sulphate, Sulphuric acid, Potassium Permanganate solution,

Procedure:

Weighed accurately about 0.25 g of Ferrous Sulfate, dissolved in a mixture of 12 ml of dilute

Sulfuric acid (1 → 25) and added 25 ml of freshly boiled and cooled water, and titrated with
N/10 Potassium Permanganate solution from the burette. Continued titration until the appearance
of permanent pink colour.
