survival is our most basic need which motivates
our behavior, once the level is fulfilled, the next
level up is what motivates us and so on.
Physiological needs are biological requirements for
human survival e.g. air, food, drink, shelter,
clothing, sex and sleep. If these needs are not
satisfied, the human body cannot function
optimally. Such needs are the most important.
Safety needs include protection from elements,
security, order, law, stability and freedom from
fear. The third level of human needs is social, it
involves love and feelings of belongingness.
Examples of that level include friendship, intimacy,
trust, acceptance, receiving and giving affection
and love. Thus, it comprises affiliating i.e. being
part of a group like a family, friends or a society.
Esteem needs is classified into two categories: self-
esteem and the desire for reputation or respect
from others. Self-esteem involves dignity,
achievement, mastery and independence. The
second is the desire for reputation that comprises
status and prestige.
