Tall Ships Festival

By Orla Farrell
Tall ships are big ships that people travelled on more than a hundred years ago. There is a
special festival called the Tall Ships Festival in my city every May. Hundreds of people go to
it every year.
Last year I went to the festival with my uncle, who loves all kinds of ships, but tall ships are
his favourite. It was fantastic and I took lots of photos! We could go onto some of the ships,
and that was exciting! On one ship, called The Heron, the people who worked there showed
us all the different parts of their ship. The ship wasn’t moving, but I walked around and
imagined that I was travelling to mysterious and exotic places.
In the afternoon, we watched four of the smallest ships taking part in a short race. It was
exciting because there was quite a lot of wind and the ships moved fast. Then, in the
evening, we went to a feast on one of the ships. We had to pay, but it didn’t cost a lot of
money and the food was delicious. There was music too, and later, there were some
fireworks. They were really noisy and a bit scary!
Example:

0 Orla says that tall ships are

a large. b quiet. c modern.

21 What does Orla say about the festival? [1]

a It is new.
b It is popular.
c It is far from her home.

22 What does Orla say about her uncle? [1]

a He goes to the festival every year.
b He likes taking photos of tall ships.
c He prefers tall ships to other ships.

23 On The Heron, Orla [1]

a went on a short journey.
b saw everywhere on the ship.
c talked to the people who worked on it.

24 What does Orla say about the race? [1]

a She enjoyed it.
b All the ships were in it.
c She was on one of the ships.

25 What did Orla like best in the evening? [1]

a the music
b the fireworks
c the food

Reading 2
Read the text and the sentences below. Are the sentences true or false?
Write T if the sentence is true and F if the sentence is false.

The amazing octopus

The octopus looks very different from many other animals because it has eight arms and a
soft body with no bones. But it is a clever animal which can learn new things very quickly
and do quite difficult puzzles. An octopus’ brain is quite large, but it is very different from a
human brain, and also smaller. The central part of an octopus’ brain contains only about
10% of its brain cells. The two parts of the brain which the octopus uses to see contain
about 30% of its brain cells. The other 60% of its brain cells are in its arms. That’s like
having a small brain in each of its eight arms!
An octopus doesn’t have lungs. Instead, like fish, it has things called gills which it uses to
breathe. An octopus can take in oxygen from the water that moves past its gills. Every
octopus also has three hearts! The biggest one sends blood around its body and the two
smaller ones help blood get to and from the octopus’ gills.
Every octopus also has blue blood. That’s because octopus blood contains something
called hemocyanin, which helps the blood carry oxygen round the octopus’ body in
very cold water.

Example:

0 An octopus is like a lot of other animals. F

26 An octopus is slow to learn new things. [1]

27 Most of an octopus’ brain cells are in its central brain. [1]

28 An octopus has more than 50% of its brain cells in its arms. [1]

29 Only one of the octopus’ hearts sends blood to the gills. [1]

30 If the water is really cold, oxygen can go round an octopus’ body. [1]
