Dear Mom,

In the previous unit #2, we had to choose a huge problem that’s either local, national, or global

(Example: Self-love) and make a speech to convince more people to take action. We also learn about

rhetorical devices and relearnt the meanings of "pathos", "logos", and "ethos" so we could make our

speeches stronger and even more convincing.

After I presented my speech about perfectionism, I believe my glow area was using a genuine and

loud voice because I practiced speaking my speech out loud plenty of times. My peers included feedback

that mentioned what I did well on: My side composition was great, I had a genuine tone of voice, and the

speech was well-organized. As for the growth areas, I can defiantly improve on pacing, pronunciation,

and eye contact. My pacing and pronunciation weren't the best because I kept worrying about the time

limit. Plus, I didn't make much eye contact because I was focusing more on my notecards while wanting

to get the speech done and over with. I also received feedback but this time the feedback mentioned some

growth areas: Focus more on slowing down the pacing, improve my pronunciation, and include fewer

generalizations that might not be true (less "all of" more "most of" or "some of").

If I were to advise a 7th who will have this speech next year, I would tell them to practice a lot

with a timer (possibly at least 5 or so times per day). I would also make sure to mention that they should

practice with their PPTs and in front of another person to practice eye contact (if they can't find another

person to practice with they can try looking up every once in a while at a wall). If they keep reading their

speech out loud, they could get to the point where they start to memorize most of their speech. It can also

help them improve their presentation skills which plays a factor in the rubric. Additionally, I would tell

the 7th grade to not procrastinate even though there seems to be plenty of time because depending on the

topic chosen, actual good evidence is very hard to come across.

I want you and teacher to know that I learned that I should improve on my pacing, pronunciation,

and eye contact to prepare for what speech I might have next. On top of that, I would like to mention that

preparing and presenting the speech was stressful enough but, overall, I'm pretty proud of myself for

being able to present my speech out loud in front of the class.

With sincere regards,

Peggy Huynh
