Task 1

structure (UWindsor
Parking Garage)

Fig2. An image of the affected column.

Task 2
The tributary area of the affected column = 2.933 m* 1.25 m =3.67 m^2

Task 3

loads

Since there are 5 floors above the column, therefore:

5*3.67=18.35m^2
Dead Load:

DL =3.03*18.35= 55.6 kPa

Live load:

LL=2.4*18.85= 44 kPa (Occupancy)

LL=11*5 = 55 kPa (Point load)

The greater value governs therefore the Live Load is 55kPa.

Factored Load
Case Load 2: 1.25DL+1.5LL= 1.25*55.6+1.5*55= 152 kN (Tension)

Therefore, the factored load is 152 kN and the load is in tension.

Fig 7. Hand calculations of the braces loads.

By using the method of joints, the loads of the braces were found based on the
previous calculations of the column load. Therefore, the load on each brace is
109kN in compression.

Task 4

The axial capacity of the column has been reduced to 570 kN in Tension.
The axial capacity of the column has been reduced to 600 kN in compression.

Therefore, the loads acting on the column and the braces are less than the axial capacity after
reduction.

Since the incident has occurred in the summer. Calculations of the snow load isn’t needed.

My recommendations to the university of Windsor to keep the parking garage open since it will
remain safe however the column still needs to be fixed.
