It states that at a constant temperature,” the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the
pressure of the gas”.
The most commonly used form of Henry’s law states that “the partial pressure (p) of a gas in vapour
phase is proportional to the mole fraction of the gas (x) in the solution or solubility of gas in the
solution“
P = KH X
Here KH is the Henry’s law constant and x is the mole fraction of the gas.
To increase the solubility of CO2 in soda water and soft drinks, the bottle is sealed under high
pressure.
To avoid the toxic effects of high concentration of nitrogen in the blond, the tanks used by scuda
divers are filled with air diluted with helium (11.7% helium, 56.2% nitrogen and 32.1% oxygen).
At high altitudes, low blood oxygen causes climbers to become weak and make them unable to
think clearly, which are symptoms of a condition known as anoxia.
In a solution, the vapour pressure of a component at a given temperature is equal to the mole fraction
of that component in the solution multiplies by the vapour pressure of that component in the pure
state.
If P is the total pressure of the system at the same temperature, then by Dalton’s law of partial
pressures
P = pA + pB
=xApoA + xBpoB
or P = (1-xB) poA + xBpoB
= (poB - poA) xB +poA
(i)
Since PoA and poB are constant at a particular temperature, it is evident from eqn. (i) that the total vapour
pressure is a linear function of the mole fraction xB (or xA as xA = 1 –xB).
Liquid pairs that obey the Raoult’s law are called ideal solution. Such pairs are, however, very limited.
Example: benzene + toluene, hexane + heptanes, chlorobenzene + bromobenzene.
