1. PURPOSE

This method statement shall be applied to fabrication and erection of Steel Structural Works for Dhaka Mass Rapid
Transit Development Project. The method statement shall be defined the method of quality control from materials
receiving until completion of erection state.

2. APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS

The fabrication and erection Shall Conform to the detail drawings approved Shop Drawing the Codes and standard
in accordance with following.

i) BNBC (Bangladesh National Building Code: 2010)

ii) AISC 303 (Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges)

iii) AWS D1.1 (American Welding Society)

iv) EN 1435 (European Standard)

v) ASTM (American Standard for Testing and Material)

vi) JIS (Japanese Industry Standard)

vii) ANSI/ASSE A-10.13-2011(Safety Requirement of Steel Erection)

3. SCOPE OF INSPECTIONS

a) Shop Drawing and Full-Size drawing inspection.

b) Material inspection

c) Marking and Cutting inspection

d) Assembly inspection

e) Welding inspection

f) Radiographic inspection

g) Ultrasonic inspection

h) Dye Penetrant Examination

i) Dimension inspection

j) Painting inspection

k) Packing inspection

4. INSPECTION AND TEST PLAN


A document sequentially lists for a component, part, type of work, the examination, inspection and test activities
(hereinafter called as inspections) referring the necessary documents to carry out the operations and evaluate the
results and indicating the inspection point of the company, client and other involved Third Parties Inspectors or
Testing Agency. The table of Inspection and Test Plan for fabrication and erection work is shown below.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Shop Drawing

i) All shop drawing shall be checked by Engineer to be in accordance with approved


detailed Construction drawing

ii) Shop drawing shall be submitted for approved to Engineer prior to commencement of fabrication

5.2 Full size Drawing

i) The measuring tapes which are used for fabrication shall be calibrated to match with the master measuring steel
tape as following

a) Fix the master measuring steel tape (30 M) on the floor with a tension of 10 kgs.

b) Put the measuring tape to be calibrated parallel with master measuring steel tape and stretch

c) When the both points of 30 Meter on the measuring tape being calibrated and master measuring tape
coincide on then measure the tensile force in the tape being calibrated and use this value for
fabrication measurement control.

ii) Inspection of steel marking tape and template.

All dimensions and information of marking tape, template, gauge and shop drawing (include shrinkage and
extension value) shall be check by Engineer.

5.3 Material Inspection

5.3.1 Hot rolled products made from weldable, fine gain structural steel in according to ASTM A 36M: 2008.

Grade Designation: For Plate, Shape, and Bars: Tensile strength in Mpa 400 - 550, Minimum Yield Point Mpa 250.

a) Chemical composition: The chemical composition was determined

by ladle analysis that it shall be complied with the value as the following;

S (Max.) 0.05%

b) Mechanical properties: The mechanical properties of steel shall comply with the requirement as the followings;
Notes:
a) Refer to ASTM AG/A6M for specimen orientation under tension test.
b) Yield Point 220 Mpa for 20 mm thickness.
c) For wide flange shapes aver 634 kgs/m, 550 Mpa max. Tensile strength does not apply and minimum
elongation in 50 mm. long specimen of 19 percentage applies.
d) Elongation is not required to be determined for floor plates.
e) For plate wider than 600 mm. elongation requirement is reduced 2 percentage points.
f) All structural steel shall be manufactured by reputed manufactures only.

c) Dimension tolerance for round bar.

i) Permissible variations for the nominal diameter are also given in table 1.

ii) The difference between the largest and smallest diameter measured in the same cross-sectional plan, shall not
exceed 80% of the permissible total variations for diameter according to table 1(e.g. maximum 0.8 mm for d=20
mm)

ii) Round steel shall be straight to within the permissible variations given in table 2.

5.3.2 Material that not identified specification shall inspected and acceptance criteria as follows:

5.3.2.1 Steel plate

i) Permissible variation in thickness

iii) Permissible variation in flatness

NOTE 1---When the longer dimension is under 900 mm, the permissible variation should not exceed 6 mm. When
the longer dimension is from 900 to 1800 mm, incl., the permissible variation should not exceed 75 % of the
tabular amount for the specified width, but in no case less than 6 mm.

NOTE 2---These variations apply to plates that have a specified minimum tensile strength of not more than 400
MPa or comparable chemical composition or hardness. The limits in the table are increased 5 % for plates
specified to a higher minimum tensile strength or compatible chemistry or hardness.

NOTE 3---This table and these notes cover the permissible variations for flatness of circular and sketch plates,
based on the maximum dimensions of those plates.

Flatness Variations for Length-The longer dimension specified is considered the length, and permissible variation
in flatness along the length should not exceed the tabular amount for specified width in plates up to 4000 mm in
length, or in any 4000 mm of longer plates.

iv) Permissible variation in camber:

of the plate in the flat position.

5.3.2.2 Steel angle

5.3.3 Square tube and Rectangular tube hollow section in according to ASTM A500 Grade B

I) Outside dimensions.

The specified dimensions measured across the flats at positions at least 50 mm from either end of the tubing and
including allowance for convexity or concavity shall not exist the plus and minus tolerances, show in table 3.

Tolerances include allowance for convexity or concavity. For rectangular tubing having a ratio of outside large to
small flat dimension less than 1.5, and for square tubing. The tolerance on small flat dimension shall be identical
to
the large flat dimension tolerance. For rectangular tubing having a ratio of outside large to small flat dimension
greater than 3.0, the tolerance on small flat dimension shall be 2.0 times the large flat dimension tolerance.

ii) Wall thickness

The minimum wall thickness at any point of measurement on the tubing shall be not mare than 10 % less than
nominal wall thickness specified. The maximum wall thickness, excluding the weld seam of welded tubing, shall
be not more than 10 % greater than the nominal wall thickness specified. The wall thickness on square and
rectangular tubing is to be measured at the center of flat.

iii) Length

Structural tubing is normally produced in random mill lengths (1.5 m), in multiple length, and in specified mill
lengths. The length tolerance shall be according to table 4.

iv) Straightness

The permissible variation for straightness of structural tubing shall be 10.4 mm times the number of meters of total
length divided by 5.

v) Squareness of sides.

For square or rectangular structural tubing, adjacent sides may deviate from 90° by a tolerance of + 2 * max.

vi) Radius of corners

For square or rectangular structural tubing, the radius of any outside corner of the section shall not exceed three
times the specified wall thickness.

vii) Twist

The tolerances for twist or variation with respect to axial alignment of the section, for square and rectangular
structural tubing, shall be shown in table 5. Twist measurements are not to be taken within 50 mm of both ends of
the tube.

5.3.3 Carbon Steel Structural Tubing in Rounds according to ASTM A 53

5.3.4 Anchor Bolts in according to ASTM A325 Type 1.
