Participation/Professionalism Self-Assessment

Name: ____________________________

Dear SpCom 204 Student:

Because of the pandemic and the size of our class, I have not had a chance to observe many of
you directly this term, especially as you worked through weekly content or as you took part in
small group activities. This is your opportunity to tell me how you have done in terms of
participation in this course. Would you please take a few minutes to complete this self-
assessment, and then tell me at the bottom of the page what your participation grade for the term
should be. Please submit your self-assessment in the relevant dropbox on Learn by December
17th, 2021, at 11:59 p.m.

First, please fill out the chart below by highlighting the words that best describe your
participation in this class:

Contributions:
Unacceptable Poor Modest Good Excellent
Thorough, thoughtful Never Rarely Sometimes Often Always or
engagement with all almost
course materials on always
my own from week to
week, including
careful completion of
all readings and
lessons.
Active, enthusiastic, Never Rarely Sometimes Often Always or
and respectful almost
participation in small- always
group discussions and
collaborative
assignments.

Second, briefly answer the following questions:

1. How engaged were you in this class?

2. What good things would the members of your small group, or your classmates and professor
more broadly, have missed had you not been in the class?
3. Keeping in mind the limitations we all face because of the pandemic (which might reasonably
have affected your activities in the course), to what extent are you pleased with your
commitment and contributions?

Third, with reference to the descriptors below, please propose a participation and
professionalism grade for yourself out of 100.

 Excellent: A grade of 80 to 100 means that you went above and beyond an ordinary level
of student performance in your commitment and contributions to the class.

 Good: A grade of 70 to 79 means that you made consistent, solid contributions and
showed good commitment to the class.

 Modest: A grade of 60 to 69 means that you made some contributions and that you were
modestly committed to the class but that you were not always engaged or contributing.

 Poor: A grade of 50 to 59 means that you did little to contribute and had limited
commitment to class activities but that you were at least superficially present and active
in the class.

 Unacceptable: A grade of 0 to 49 means that you contributed nothing or next to nothing

to the class and showed little or no commitment to its activities.
