DCU36 Universal Voice Grade Dual Channel Unit (COT)

Description
This document provides technical information for the DCU36 Universal Voice
Grade Dual Channel Unit (COT). The DCU36, illustrated in Fig. 1.1, provides
dual two-wire Universal Voice Grade (UVG) channels with either loop- or
ground-start supervision.

Figure 1.1: DCU36 Dual UVG Channel Unit (COT)

The DCU36, located at the Central Office Terminal (COT), works in

conjunction with the Remote Digital Terminal (RDT) or Optical Network Unit
(ONU) complement plug-in units DCU 20, DCU 30, DCU 37, DCU 60, or DCU
61 to provide locally switched special services and single party message

telephone service. The DCU36 may be used to provide Foreign Exchange (FX)
service when back-to-back hybrid, or tandem, circuits are used. Locally
switched special services supported by the DCU36 include:

• Centrex Lines (CL)

• PBX Lines and Trunks
• WATS Lines and Trunks
• 800 Service Lines and Trunks
• Direct-Outward-Dialing (DOD)
• Off-Premises Extensions (OPX)
• Secretarial Lines (SL)

The DCU36 contains two current sink circuits that provide the interface
between the central office line/trunk circuits and the system digital loop
carrier system. In on-hook state, the DCU36 is compatible with Automatic
Line Insulation Tests (ALIT) and in off-hook state has a DC resistance of

1,000 ohm. The DCU36 is not provisionable and provides 0dB of channel loss
with an input impedance of 900 ohm in series with 2.16µF. Refer to Fig. 2 for a
block diagram of the DCU36.

Figure 1.2: DCU36 Block Diagram

In UVG or FX applications using the DCU36 and its RDT complement

DCU37, the DCU36 automatically selects loop- or ground-start signaling.
When the DCU37 is provisioned for SL/OPX, the DCU36 signaling is
automatically configured for loop-start only.

The DCU36 is compatible with rotary and Dual Tone Multifrequency (DTMF)
dialing, and it is equipped with forward disconnect and on-hook transmission
capabilities. The model number, revision level, and date of manufacture are
coded on the unit’s nonvolatile memory to allow an operator to access card
inventory information from the Supervisory System (SS).

Changes in Document
This document has been reissued for rebranding to reflect AFC corporate
identity.

Application
Universal Voice Grade
The DCU36 is used with its complement RDT channel unit DCU 37 to provide
locally-switched special services. Refer to Fig. 3 for a typical UVG application.
In this configuration, the DCU 37 is auto-provisioned in the RDT for a
600 ohm input impedance with 0dB of insertion loss.

Figure 1.3: Typical UVG Application

Secretarial Line/Off-Premises Extension

The DCU36 may be used with the DCU 37 at the RDT or ONU for SL/OPX
applications. When the SL/OPX function is selected, the COT channel unit,
DCU36, can be bridged to other channel units or cable pairs using bridge
lifters.

Foreign Exchange
The DCU36 can be used to interface a Foreign Exchange Station (FXS)
channel unit if back-to-back hybrid circuits are used in the central office.
When used in this configuration, the RDT or ONU unit is auto-provisioned for
a 600 ohm input impedance with 0dB of insertion loss.

363-252-706 DCU36 Description, Application, and Installation
Issue 3, March 2004

For offices that use back-to-back hybrid applications, two FX circuits may be
served using the DCU36 at the COT and the DCU 37 at the RDT. In this
approach, one channel of the DCU 36 connects to an FXS channel unit, which
in turn is routed to an Foreign Exchange Office (FXO) channel unit via
interoffice facility. Refer to for a typical 2-wire FX application.

Installation

ALERT! The DCU36 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the DCU 36 from
the protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the DCU36 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
common shelf. If storing or shipping the DCU36 becomes necessary, place
it in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent
static buildup.

Installing the DCU36

The DCU36 can be installed in any channel slot of a COT channel shelf. Insert
the unit in the slot, ensuring the connector mates properly with the connector
in the channel shelf. Use the following procedure to install the DCU36.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. If card received is incorrect or

damaged, contact:

Provisioning
There are no provisionable parameters for the DCU36.

Testing
General
The DCU36 is compatible with the PG test controller or equivalent systems
that use Mechanized Loop Testing (MLT) procedures. All system channel
units are compatible with the integrated Metallic Test Access Unit (MTAU)
and provide the interface as required for the remote test units. The system
provides channel testing using internal channel unit diagnostics inherent to
the system.

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit may be accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jacks and indicator. The busy LED lights when either of
the channels is in use. The test jacks are used to monitor the tip and ring leads
of the channel unit. Jacks are provided to monitor both the odd and even
channels.

Diagnostic Tests
The system can perform diagnostics on channel units to verify performance of
each channel. These tests can be performed on a demand or routine basis and
may be used in lieu of manual ring, dial, and talk tests for channel unit
turn-up.

The system diagnostic capabilities can verify the following DCU36 functions:

• 2-Wire Insertion Loss

• 1 kHz Hybrid Balance
• Off-hook
• Ringing
• Ring Ground
• Reverse Battery
• Tip Open

The results of these procedures are recorded and maintained in the SS for
analysis at a later time. Routine diagnostic reports are maintained in the SS
for display or print until new diagnostic reports are generated.

6. Enter desired channel number and press <ENTER>. The channel number con-
tains the channel shelf number (1-7), a hyphen (-), and the channel slot number
(1-96). The system displays Test Menu and a list of provisioning parameters.
7. Select 1 ALL. All available automatic tests are performed on the equipped
channel unit.
If the channel unit fails the diagnostic tests, go to step 8.
If the channel unit passes the diagnostic tests and an additional channel
unit is to be tested, press <ESC> repeatedly to return to the Channel
Unit Diagnostics Menu and repeat steps 4 through 7 for each channel to
be tested.
If the channel unit passes the diagnostic tests and all channel units have
been tested, this procedure is complete.
8. Remove and reinsert the failed channel unit. Refer to Installing the DCU36 for
procedures.
9. Press <ESC> until Channel Unit Diagnostics Menu displays, and repeat steps
4 through 7. If the channel unit fails a second time, go to step 10.
