Chapter 1
DCU60 Single Party Service Dual Channel Unit (ONU)

Description
This document provides technical information for the DCU60 Single Party
Service Dual Channel Unit (ONU).

The DCU60, shown in Fig. 1.1, provides two channels with two-wire
single-party Message Telephone Service (MTS) and loop-start supervision. It
is a current source circuit and interfaces between the subscriber and the
Fiber-In-The-Loop (FITL) system. The DCU60 is compatible with rotary and
Dual Tone Multifrequency (DTMF) dialing and is equipped with forward
disconnect capabilities.

Changes in Document Issue 4, March 2004

The DCU60 is not provisionable. It provides 4dB of channel loss in the receive
direction and 2dB of channel loss in the transmit direction with an input
impedance of 600W in series with 2.16 µF.

The model number, revision level, and date of manufacture are coded in the
unit’s nonvolatile memory to allow an operator to access card inventory
information from the Supervisory System (SS). Refer to Fig. 1.2 for a block
diagram of the DCU60.

Issue 4, March 2004 Applications

Applications
The DCU60 works as a complement to the Central Office Terminal (COT)
DCU10 to provide two channels of single-party Message Telephone Service
(MTS). With the DCU10 at the COT, the DCU60 at the ONU auto-provisions
for SPS application.

Installation

ALERT! The DCU60 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Do not remove the DCU60 from
the protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the DCU60 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack. If
storing or shipping the DCU60 becomes necessary, place it in a conductive
shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent static buildup.

Installing the Card

The DCU60 can be installed in any channel slot of a COT or (Remote Digital
Terminal) RDT shelf. Insert the unit in the slot, ensuring that the connector
mates properly with the connector in the channel shelf. Use the following
procedure to install the DCU60.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. If an incorrect or damaged card is

received, contact:
AFC

6. Enter channel number or Pair Gain (PG) address of channel slot assigned by
system administrator and press <ENTER>.
Note: The channel number consists of the channel shelf number
(1-7), a hyphen (-), and the channel unit number (1-96). The PG
address includes the PG number followed by the PG cable number, a
comma (,), and the pair count, e.g., PG01,103.

The SS displays:

UNEQUIPPED Channel Not Provisioned

Note: If the selected channel slot does not show as unequipped,

contact your supervisor.

7. Make sure you are wearing an ESD-approved wrist strap properly connected
to an ESD ground connection.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap.

8. Remove new DCU60 from shipping container.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

9. Inspect contacts on new channel unit. Contacts are located on connector and
back edge of card. Contacts should be clean, straight, and free from damage.
10. Place latch on DCU60 circuit card in open position and insert channel unit into
slot. While holding faceplate, position card onto guides and slide card into slot
until firmly seated.
11. Position latch on DCU60 circuit card in closed position. Verify that card is
firmly in place before closing latch.
12. Update office records. DCU60 installation procedure complete.

Verifying F1:F2 Cross-Connects

If installed, the F1:F2 cross-connects are verified using the SS. By installing
and verifying the F1:F2 cross-connects, you are able to make cable pair
assignments at the COT or RDT. Use the following procedure to verify the
cross-connects and display or print the Channel Shelf Status Report.

1. Logon to SS. Main Menu displays.

2. Select 3 Channel Provisioning and then <ENTER>. Channel
Provisioning Menu displays.

Audible/Visual Indicator
If the DCU60 is installed in an COT or RDT channel slot that has been
manually provisioned for a different type of channel unit, an indicator sounds
and a Channel Unit Light-Emitting Diode (CU LED) on the Alarm Unit lights,
indicating a channel unit mismatch.

Outside Plant engineering

Circuit design for the use of the DCU60 is not required if the COT or RDT is
located within 500 ft. of the subscriber. The constraints are outlined in
TR-TSY-000909, Generic Requirements and Objectives for FITL Systems.

Provisioning
There are no provisionable parameters for the DCU60. When the DCU60 is
inserted into a channel slot, the SS automatically provisions that slot. Once
the channel slot is reserved for the DCU60, the SS reports an alarm should a
different type of channel unit be inserted into the slot.

Testing
General
The DCU60 is compatible with the PG Test Controller or equivalent systems
that use Mechanized Loop Testing (MLT) procedures. All system channel units
are compatible with the integrated system Metallic Test Access Unit (MTAU)
and provide the interface for the remote test units as required.

Local Tests
Local tests from the DCU60 may be accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jacks and indicator. The BUSY LED lights when one of the
channels is in use. The tip and ring test jacks are used to monitor both the odd
and even channels of the DCU60.

Turnup Diagnostic Tests

Turnup diagnostic tests consist of channel unit diagnostic procedures

performed after installation through the SS. This turnup procedure verifies
channel function without the need for standard ring, dial, and talk procedures.
These channel unit diagnostics can be performed on a number of channel units
in less time than traditional turnup procedures. Use the following procedure
to conduct the turnup diagnostic test procedure.

The DCU60 also has faceplate-mounted test jacks that allow access to each
channel for traditional turnup procedures.

ALERT! Turnup tests can be service-affecting. Be sure that the channels you
select are not connected and/or the subscribers have been notified prior to
proceeding.
