SFU22 Two Coin Single Channel Fiber Unit (ONU)

Description
This document provides technical information for the SFU22 Two Coin Single
Channel Fiber Unit (ONU). This document has been reissued for rebranding
to reflect AFC corporate identity.

The SFU22 is a current source unit that automatically provides coin-first

service when ground-start supervision is used. When loop-start supervision is
used, dial-tone-first service is automatically provided. Fig. 1.1 illustrates the
SFU22 faceplate.

Changes in Document Issue 3, March 2004

The SFU22 current source is ±48VDC on the tip or -48VDC or ground on the
ring leads and ±130 VDC on the tip lead of the channel unit for coin return or
collect applications. The SFU22 provides 2 dB of insertion loss in the transmit
direction, 4 dB in the receive direction, and an input impedance of 600¾ in
series with 2.16µF. The SFU22 sources 23 mA of loop current and 41 mA of
coin control current to the maximum loop length of 500 feet.

The SFU22 is compatible with basic voice grade analog transmission criteria
in Functional Criteria For FITL, TR-TSY-000909, for 500-ft. loops.

The card type (CLEI™), revision level, and date of manufacture are coded in
the unit’s nonvolatile memory to allow an operator to access card inventory
information from the Supervisory System (SS).

Fig. 1.2 is a block diagram of the SFU22.

Issue 3, March 2004 Application

Application
The SFU22 is compatible with both 1C/2C-type and 1D/2D-type coin telephone
sets.

Installation

ALERT! The SFU22 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the SFU22 from
the protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the SFU22 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
common shelf. If storing or shipping the SFU22 becomes necessary, place it
in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent
static buildup.

Installing the SFU22

The SFU22 can be installed in any channel slot of an Optical Network Unit
(ONU) channel shelf. Insert the unit in the slot, ensuring that the connector
mates properly with the connector in the channel shelf.

Use the following procedure to install the SFU22.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. Contact AFC if card received is
incorrect or damaged.

to the ESD ground connection on the lower right front of the common shelf.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

For first-time installation, go to Step 10. If installation is due to a failed

SFU22, continue with Step 8.
8. Remove the desired SFU22 channel unit from the channel shelf.

ALERT! When removing a channel unit, be sure that it does not touch
components on an adjacent unit. Contact with other components could
disable the entire system.

9. Pack the channel unit in an appropriate ESD-safe container.

10. Remove new SFU22 channel unit from shipping container.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

11. Inspect contacts on new channel unit. Contacts are located on connector and
back edge of card. Contacts should be clean, straight, and free from damage.
12. Place latch on SFU22 circuit card in open position and insert channel unit into
slot. While holding faceplate, position card onto guides and slide card into slot
until firmly seated.
13. Position latch on SFU22 circuit card in closed position. Verify that card is
firmly in place before closing latch.
14. Enter channel number or PG address of channel slot assigned by system ad-
ministrator and press <ENTER>. The system displays:

Provisioning Issue 3, March 2004

Provisioning
There are no provisionable parameters for the SFU22. The default parameters
are:

• Function - Coin
• Loss - 2 dB transmit, 4 dB receive
• Impedance - 600 ¾
• Signaling - Auto Loop Start/Ground Start

Testing

General
The SFU22 plug-in module provides faceplate-mounted jacks for access to the
channel circuit. All channel units of the system are compatible with drop side
testing and the Pair Gain Test Controller (PGTC). Test results are returned as
resistive signatures.

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit can be accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jacks and indicator.

• Busy Indicator: The busy indicator lights when the channel is in use.
• Tip and Ring Test Jacks: The test jacks are used to monitor the tip and
ring leads of the channel unit.

Diagnostic Tests
The system can perform diagnostic tests on channel units to verify
performance. The tests can be performed on a demand basis only by the SS.

The following functions of the SFU22 can be verified by using the diagnostic
tests:

• Off-hook test
• Ringing test
• 1,000 Hz insertion loss test
• Two-wire 1 kHz hybrid balance test

Note: Coin-specific tests are not available for the SFU22.
