Chapter 1
SFU4 Four-Wire Voice Frequency Special Service
Single Channel Fiber Unit

Description
This document provides technical information for the SFU4 Four-Wire Voice
Frequency Special Service Single Channel Fiber Unit. The SFU4 faceplate is
shown in Fig. 1.1.

SFU4 Description, Application, and Installation November 2004
Description 363-252-721, Issue 4

The SFU4 is a single channel unit that can be used at the Optical Network
Unit (ONU) end of the system to provide either 4-wire Duplex (DX), 4-wire
Equalized Transmission Only (ETO), or 4-wire Transmission Only (TO)
service. The SFU4 uses DX signaling to interface long 4-wire metallic
extensions with 4000W DX signaling range capabilities.

The card type (CLEI™), revision level, and date of manufacture are coded into
the unit’s nonvolatile memory to allow an operator to access card inventory
information from the element management system (EMS). Refer to Fig. 1.2 for
a functional block diagram of the SFU4.

363-252-721, Issue 4 Changes in Document

Changes in Document
This document has been reissued for the following reasons:

• Previous references to the Supervisory System (SS) have been replaced

with references to the element management system (EMS). This
document uses the term EMS to refer generically to the Supervisory
System, MarcView Voice, and DISC★S NarrowbandManager (NBMgr)
products. The functionality and menuing of these products are similar and
the procedures described in this book are universal to all of them.
• Procedural steps have been updated as marked with change bars.

Application
The primary application is on Private Branch Exchange (PBX) tie trunk lines
as illustrated in Fig. 1.3. For 4-wire ETO or 4-wire TO applications, the SFU4
is used where no signaling is required or where in-band end-to-end signaling
is used (such as private line data transmission). For either function, the SFU4
is equipped with provisionable transmit and receive level controls and
post-equalization for loaded or non-loaded cables. The equalization is
functionally equivalent to a WECO 309B equalizer. For 4-wire ETO and TO
applications, the SFU4 can source sealing current. If an SFU4 is provisioned
as 4-wire TO and no sealing current, it cannot be used in bridged circuits.

Installation

ALERT! The SFU4 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be damaged
by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the SFU4 from the
protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the static
charge on the SFU4 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to ground
using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the Common
Shelf. If storing or shipping the SFU4 becomes necessary, place it in a
conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent static
buildup.

Equalization Settings 363-252-721, Issue 4

Equalization Settings
Measurements should be taken and the instances of the frequency spectrum
that fall outside the prescribed parameters should be noted. The standard
frequencies used in the field are 400Hz, 1 kHz, and 2800Hz. Since the gain is
set to center the 1 kHz level, the only two “handles” are 400Hz and 2800Hz.
Check other frequencies in the VF spectrum.

The slope, height, and bandwidth controls should be adjusted from the EMS or
a Craft Interface Device (CID) to bring the passband within the desired limits.
The objectives are as follows:

• 400Hz - 2800Hz: –0.2dB to +2.5dB

• 300Hz - 3000Hz: –0.5dB to +2.2dB
• 3000Hz - 3200Hz: –0.5dB to +4.0dB

Note 1: All specifications listed above are relative to 1 kHz and the
plus (+) values mean more loss (lower level).

Note 2: Some applications might require the transmit gain to be

adjusted to compensate for the effects of the slope, bandwidth, and
height settings in the 1 kHz area.

Slope

The amount and frequency content of the passband that is affected by slope
control is adjusted independently of the other two settings. This is not the case
with the bandwidth and height controls; an adjustment to one affects the
other directly. Fig. 1.4 and Fig. 1.5 show the gain-frequency responses of the
equalizer with non-loaded and loaded cable respectively.

Height and Bandwidth 363-252-721, Issue 4

With loaded cable, the slope pivots around 1 kHz. The lower the slope number,
the flatter the response curve. Conversely, as the slope number increases there
is more roll-off in the frequencies below 1 kHz; and there is an increase in
level above 1 kHz up to about 2500Hz, then there is a gradual downward
roll-off.

If 300Hz is too low and 3kHz is too high (or within specification but toward the
high end), lowering the slope can bring the circuit within tolerance.
Conversely, if 300Hz is too high and 3kHz is low, the slope can be adjusted
upward to bring it within specification.

Height and Bandwidth

Height and bandwidth controls work in tandem. These adjustments are made
from the EMS or a CID. They control a peaking low-pass filter in the equalizer
on the channel card. The peaking that is controlled by the height control is
centered at 3250Hz. The bandpass control adjusts the “Q” of the filter. In other
words, it affects the number of additional frequencies that are peaked and to
what extent these frequencies are affected.

As shown by Fig. 1.6 and Fig. 1.7, the greater the height setting, the greater
the peaking at 3250Hz. As the bandwidth increases, the number of
frequencies that are affected increases; also, as the bandwidth increases, the
frequencies below 1 kHz are rolled off more steeply.

Figure 1.7: Gain vs. Frequency at High Bandwidth Setting

For excessive roll-off in the higher frequencies (greater loss/lower level), raise
the height control to 3200 Hz, which is just within specification. Repeat the
measurements and raise the bandwidth until all frequencies between 1kHz
and 3200Hz are within specification.

As bandwidth peaking for higher frequencies is increased, the attenuation of

frequencies below 1 kHz is also increased, as demonstrated in Fig. 1.7. The
slope or gain control should be adjusted if necessary to achieve as flat a
response as possible with all frequency points within the prescribed limits.

This is an interactive process, and the crafts person must fine-tune the circuit
using the height, slope, and bandwidth equalization controls. Fig. 1.8, Fig. 1.9,
and Fig. 1.10 show how the slope height, and bandwidth controls affect the
artificial line described in TA-TSY-000057, Issue 4, (artline 4-3a).

Testing

General
The SFU4 provides a faceplate-mounted jack for access to the channel circuit.
All channel units are compatible with the integrated Metallic Test Access Unit
(MTAU) and provide the interface as required for the remote test units. The
system provides channel testing using internal channel unit diagnostics
inherent to the system.

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit may be accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jack and a D3/D4 Portable Test Set.

Diagnostic Tests 363-252-721, Issue 4

Diagnostic Tests
The system can perform diagnostic tests on channel units to verify
performance of the SFU4. These diagnostic capabilities can verify the
following SFU4 functions:

• 1000 Hz Insertion Loss

• DX Signaling

The results of these routine tests are recorded and maintained in the EMS for
analysis at a later time. Routine diagnostic reports are maintained in the
EMS for display or print until new diagnostic reports are generated.

Demand Diagnostic Tests

Demand diagnostic test procedures should be used when a small number of

channel units is to be tested. Use the following procedure to perform demand
