"HOW THE SUN WAS MADE".

Many, many years ago before even you or I were born there was only the moon and the stars
in the sky and on the earth there were only the birds and the animals.

Then one day an Emu and a Brolga bird were having a terrible argument on a big Plain near
the Murrimbidgee River. The Brolga bird became so annoyed and angry with the Emu that
she rushed to her nest took one of the eggs and threw it with all of her force up into the sky.

As the egg travelled upwards it hit a heap of firewood and broke so that the yolk spilt over the
firewood and it burst into a great flame which lit up all the earth.

Of course all the animals were amazed by the sudden brightness and being so used to
darkness all the time they were so dazzled they could not see.

Now far up in the sky there lived a good Spirit and when he saw how lovely the earth looked
when it was lit up he thought what a good idea it would be if there could be a big fire every
day to light up all the earth.

So when the fire had died out and the night had come again he called all the good spirits
together and told them what a wonderful thing had happened. Then together they began to
collect as much wood as they could find and they put it into one big heap. When the heap was
big enough the good spirit sent out a star to tell the animals sleeping on earth that the fire
would soon be lit.

That Star is what we call the Morning Star, and if you get out of bed very early in the morning
you still see It coming to tell everyone on earth that the sky will soon be lit up.

But the good spirit had made a mistake, for when all the animals were fast asleep how could
they see the Morning Star?

So once again the good spirit gathered all his friends about him and they had another long
talk. Of course they decided that there must be some noise to wake the animals so they could
see the Morning Star.

At last one evening as they were talking away they heard the laugh of a Kookaburra Bird and
they then knew that that was the noise they wanted.

They told the Kookaburra of their troubles and asked him if he would be good enough to
laugh his loudest as the day was breaking, as with his loud laugh he would be sure to wake
up all the animals and without this the earth would be forever in darkness again.

Now the Kookaburra was a kind and understanding Bird and he agreed to laugh his loudest at
the break of every day, and ever since he has done this and sometimes you may hear him
yourself.
