Why does the narrator/scientist decide not to save the octopus from being devoured by the Pajama
shark despite the fact that he can prevent it from happening?
In the documentary "My Octopus Teacher," the narrator and protagonist, Craig Foster, is a filmmaker and
free diver who forms a deep connection with an octopus he encounters while diving in a kelp forest in
South Africa. Throughout the documentary, Foster observes and interacts with the octopus, learning
about its behaviors and developing a profound appreciation for its intelligence and complexity.

Towards the end of the documentary, Foster witnesses a pajama shark attacking and attempting to eat
the octopus. He has the ability to intervene and save the octopus, but he decides not to do so. This
decision was not made lightly and was based on several factors.

Firstly, Foster recognizes that this is a natural predator-prey interaction, and interfering would disrupt the
delicate balance of the ecosystem. The octopus is not a pet, but a wild animal, and Foster respects the
autonomy and agency of the octopus to defend itself and navigate the challenges of its environment.

Secondly, Foster has a deep reverence for the natural world and understands that death and loss are
integral parts of the cycle of life. By allowing the octopus to be devoured by the pajama shark, he honors
the octopus's life and acknowledges its place in the ecosystem.

Finally, Foster recognizes that his role as a filmmaker and observer is to document and bear witness to
these interactions, rather than to interfere or alter them for his own purposes. By filming the event,
Foster is able to share this powerful moment with the world, raising awareness about the complex and
interconnected nature of the natural world.

Overall, Foster's decision not to intervene in the octopus's predation by the pajama shark was a
thoughtful and ethical choice, based on his deep respect for the natural world and his role as a
filmmaker and observer.
