Practical :
Yoga Practices during Pregnancy
1. P
• Divided in to three stages

• Usually begins from 37 weeks


Stages of Labour
• Before 37 weeks – Preterm labour

• Full term delivery from 37 – 42 weeks

First Stage / Cervical Stage/ Cervical Dilates 3-4 cms / lasts about 12-18 hours

• Secretion of Oxytocin for stimulating uterine contractions

• Preparation of birth canal to expel the foetus Stretching of Cervix

• Starts from labour pain and ends with dilation of Cervix Hypothalamus

Two Phases :
Pituitary Gland

1. Latent Phase – Cervicex Dilates Upto 3 cms


Oxytocin
2. Active Phase – 4 – 10 cms

• Baby’s head comes down in the pelvis


Second Stage / Full Dilation 10 cms / average duration - 2 hours

• Starts from Full Dilation and ends expulsion of baby from birth canal.

• Still having regular contractions.

• Mother feels the desire to push


Third Stage – Duration 15 Mins

• Starts from Expulsion of fetus and ends with expulsion Placenta and membrane

• Placenta slowly detaching from uterine lining.

• Still having contractions to push placenta down

• Moderate bleeding
Postnatal
• Uterus Size 1000 gms --- First week – 500 gms --- By six weeks – 50 gms

• Discharge of Lochia - vaginal discharge blood, endometrial tissues & mucus – Upto 5 weeks
Postnatal Yoga Care

Postpartum yoga is a modified, low-intensity yoga practice.


A lot of changes happen to your body after childbirth.
This type of yoga is designed to help your body recover. Postpartum yoga offers the
most benefits during the first three months after childbirth.
For example, postpartum yoga has been shown to decrease the risk of postpartum
depression.
Yoga can help balance your energy, lower blood pressure, and reduce stress and
anxiety.
Postpartum yoga may also offer the following benefits:
•Increased calmness
•Decreased anxiety and depression
•Reduced irritability and anger
•Increased energy
•Lower blood pressure
•Reduced muscle tension
•Relaxation through meditation
Practicing yoga after childbirth has been shown to alleviate symptoms of postpartum
depression, which can occur after the birth of your baby. Postpartum depression may
appear mild at first. Symptoms can develop within weeks of childbirth or even a year
after childbirth. Symptoms include:
•Severe mood swings
•Uncontrollable crying
•Trouble bonding with baby
•Withdrawal from family and friends
•No appetite or eating more than usual
•Insomnia or oversleeping
•Extreme fatigue
•No interest in activities you enjoyed before
•Irritability and anger
•Fear of not being a good mother
•Hopelessness or feelings of shame or guilt
•Anxiety
•Thoughts of harming yourself
