HUMANISTIC

PSYCHOLOGY
You and your group are stranded on
a deserted island.
ACTIVITY
Your task is to come up with your
TOP TEN steps to ensure the survival
of you and your group.

NOTE:
1. There are no other people on the
island.
2. There is edible vegetation
3. There may or may not be animal
life on the island or at sea.
4. There are no buildings/

structures

Let’s evaluate our lists.
1. What was your NUMBER 1?
2. Why?
3. What do you believe is the most
important part of survival?
4. What else did you consider given that
the instructions prompted that you
would be stuck for “a while”?

3
What
motivates you?

How is it similar/different to
other branches discussed so far?

HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
SELF ACTUALIZATION: achieving full potential,
SELF FULFILLMENT pursuing one’s interests
NEEDS
ESTEEM NEEDS: confidence, feeling of accomplishment,
respect from others
PSYCHOLOGICAL
NEEDS BELONGINGNESS AND LOVE NEEDS: to love and be
loved, to avoid loneliness and alienation

BASIC SAFETY NEEDS: security, safety, to feel that the

NEEDS world is organized and predictable

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS: food, water,

shelter, clothing

and determine how
your list matches
Maslow’s Hierarchy
needs.
10
HOW DOES THE
HIERARCHY WORK?
Fulfilling BASIC NEEDS first before
higher - order needs is what is
important.
Ex. If you are very hungry then you
cannot seek to fulfill the need for
friendship until that need is met

VIKTOR
FRANKL
Experience in Observed Survival was
Auschwitz - behaviours of dependent on
fellow prisoners
Nazi having
- seeing that
concentration survival came “meaning” to
camp from having
“something to
hold on to”

14
“ According to Frankl, one’s
motivation is that your life has
meaning (whatever that means
to you - your family, your work,
your achievements, etc.) thus
even in the absence of basic
needs if someone’s life has
meaning then they are still
motivated to live.
15
LOGOTHERAPY
- Belief that all people have innate inclination
to seek meaning for existence.
- Motivation is based on the need for (whereas
freud argued motivation based on pleasure
and adler argued motivation based on power)
- Therefore people who cannot find meaning
will feel empty leading to depression
- All people have will, this the power to shape
your own life. WILL can be used to overcome
anxiety

16
“ How does
Frankl’s theory
contradict
Maslow’s theory?

17
RESPONSE:
According to Maslow if your basic needs are not ment then
you will not be motivated to pursue higher order needs.

Frankl says it doesn’t matter - think about his experience

in a concentration camp. People did not have food,
shelter, clothing, safety and yet they were still motivated
to survive

20
The Client-Centred
model
People discover underlying motivations for
specific attitudes.
Individuals gains self-acceptance
They Psychologist does NOT interpret for the
client.
People see how problems relate to one
another and their patterns of behaviour
- The individual makes attempts to change
the negative patterns
21
CONSIDER THIS:
You’ve just moved to a new
school and you’re having
trouble in math class.
Create a web to show how these
problems might be related and what
other issues may be contributing to
them.

IMPACT OF HUMANISTIC
PSYCHOLOGY
This is the model used by most
psychotherapists.
Provides an environment whereby
individuals are more likely to explore
their own motivations and
behavipurs openly and honestly

“ Ultimately each of the
theorists attempts to
look at people’s
motivations for
behaviour.

What is their “drive”?
