5 Eukaryote Evolution
1. When did the first eukaryotic cells evolve?
According to the endosymbiotic theory, the first
eukaryotic cells evolved from a symbiotic relationship
between two or more prokaryotic cells. Smaller
prokaryotic cells were engulfed by (or invaded) larger
prokaryotic cells.
2. Describe the endosymbiotic theory.
The endosymbiotic theory posits that some eukaryotic cell
organelles, such as mitochondria and plastids, evolved
from free-living prokaryotes
3. Discuss the evidence for the evolution of mitochondria and
chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts are like tiny green factories within plant cells
that help convert energy from sunlight into sugars, and
they have many similarities to mitochondria. The evidence
suggests that these chloroplast organelles were also once
free-living bacteria.
