ANSWERS

1. In the Figure below, Label ALL the parts from A to J

A. BOW
B. BOW THRUSTER
C. FORE MAST
D. KEEL
E. FREEBOARD
F. BRIDGE
G. ACCOMMODATION
H. PROPELLOR
I. RUDDER
J. FUNNEL
2. Define the following terms:
a) Draft, b) Freeboard, c) TPC, d) Breaking Stress, e) Safe Working Load
2a. DRAFT: The depth of the keel below the waterline at any point along
the hull.
FREEBOARD: This is the vertical distance, measured at the ship’s side,
from the waterline to the top of the freeboard deck edge. The freeboard
measurement is taken at the midships point. Deck edge is marked by a
painted line 25mm _ 100mm, above the plimsoll line.
TPC: Is the additional tonnage displaced when the mean draft is
increased by one centimeter.
BREAKING STRESS: The maximum stress a material can stand before it
breaks is called the breaking stress or ultimate tensile stress.
SAFE WORKING LOAD: is the mass or force that a piece of lifting
equipment, lifting device or accessory can safely use to lift, suspend, or
lower a mass without fear of breaking.
3. Sketch the typical Loadline Marks as marked on a Vessel.

4.
5. Calculate the “breaking strain” and “safe working load” of the following keeping a
safety factor of 6:
a) 10mm Manila rope
b) 10mm Polypropylene rope
c) 18mm Terylene rope
e) 6x24 8mm wire rope

Answer. BS SWL
a) 2D2 2x10x10/300 = 0.67 0.67/6 = 0.11
300
b) 3D2 3x10x10/300 = 1.00 1.0/6 = 0.17
300
c) 4D2 4x18x18/300 = 4.32 4.32/6 = 0.72
300
d) 20D2 20x8x8/500 = 2.56 2.56/6 = 0.42
