Rubrics for grading final papers [100 points possible]

Points Criteria Excellent [100%] Satisfactory [40-60%] Unsatisfactory [0%]

(max 100)
5 (5) On time Submitted on time 24 hours later > 1 day late

13 (15) Introduction (for [1] Addressed the importance; [2] Provided a Missing or partially Missing or partially
research proposal or thorough, logical, and detailed overview of the meeting 1-3 element meeting > 1-3 element
article) research problem; [3] Correctly defined the from “excellent” from “excellent”
research question and stated the purpose of
Background & the study; [4] Addressed the novelty or
Purpose (for case research and/or relevance to physical therapy
reports) practice; [5] Correctly formulated the title; [6]
Properly used references to support major
statements.
1. The purpose of this research proposal CANNOT determine the effectiveness of four intervention groups; but could
determine effectiveness of different taping techniques
2. If you are going to investigate different basket taping techniques, you should have mentioned somewhere in the
introduction that basketweaving taping could be applied differently, leading a reader to the purpose; otherwise it
is unclear what 3 different options you re talking in the purpose
3. Last 2 sentences in the intro, don’t belong thee but better be placed into the methods and anticipated results
22 (24) Methods & Results Methods and Results: Described correctly, Missing or partially Missing or partially
(for research accurately, and with sufficient detail the meeting 1-3 element meeting > 1-3 element
proposal or article) following items: [1] Participants' sample; [2] from “excellent” from “excellent”
Experimental setup/procedure; [3] Tests,
Case Description & measures, experimental parameters, and how
Outcomes (for case they are/will be measured and analyzed; [4]
reports) Statistical analysis, completed or proposed; [5]
Outcome results obtained or anticipated; [6]
Tables and/or figures (if used) that enhance
presentation, with all numbers and units
articulated correctly; [6] IRB statement is
provided
Case description: Accurately and with sufficient
detail, describe the following items: [1]
Patient's history and clinical impression #1; [2]
Examination, justifying the tests and measures
used; [3] Clinical impression #2; [4] Justifying
the intervention and articulating all necessary
details; [6] Outcomes; [7] Tables and/or figures
(if used) that enhance the presentation, with all
numbers and units presented correctly.

1. 1. You don't actually have three different groups in the study, but rather four different experimental conditions.
The description of these four conditions is sometimes very repetitive and provided in different parts of the
methods, which makes it difficult to follow. For example, it is unclear whether the conditions are different only by
the type of tape or by the taping technique as well.

2. The statistical analysis could also be refined, but I understand what you said and plan on doing it. 😊
8 (10) Discussion Research proposals: [1] Summarized major Missing or partially Missing or partially
anticipated findings; [2] Provided evidence either meeting 1-2 element meeting > 1-2 element
supporting or not supporting actual or anticipated from “excellent” from “excellent”
results; [3] Suggested practical applications; [4]
Discussed study limitations and suggested ideas
for further research (if applicable).

Case reports: [1] Summarized outcomes; [2]

Reflected on importance of case; [3] Discussed
clinical relevance of interventions and assessment
tools; [4] Discussed case report limitations and
suggested applications for clinical practice

1. Discussion indeed should talk about why ?1 ½” non-elastic white tape with 2” heavyweight elastic tape heel lock”
option could be less supportive and so on…what are re the factors that influence different effects of all three
taping options; in other words it should discuss anticipated results
4 (6) Abstract and key [1] Accurately represented the content and Missing or partially Missing or partially
words purpose of the study; [2] Briefly described the meeting 1-2 element meeting > 1-2 element
problem, methods, and findings; [3] Offered a from “excellent” from “excellent”
conclusion; [4] Stayed within a 250-word limit;
[5] Key words reflected the content and did not
repeat the title

1. Even if not conducted, the study abstract should present at least some anticipated results, for example what
taping strategy you think would be the best, or would be there at least any effect of taping on ankle stability
10 Text match Plagiarism: [1] Less than 5% of text match 5% to 15% of text More than 15% of text
external sources, checked with SafeAssign match; partially match and/or not
Quotations: [2] Minimum use of direct quotes meeting criteria 2 and meeting AI use
(generated by AI tools or taken from other 3 criterion
sources); [3] Quotes are cited correctly

8 (10) AMA referencing [1] Sources in the text cited according to AMA 1-3 mistakes More than 3 mistakes
style style; [2] Sources in the “References” cited
according to AMA style
1. Some of journal abbreviations in the reference list are incorrect; for example: Academic Emergency Medicine
(should be Acad Emerg Med); The American Journal of Sports Medicine (should be Am J Sports Med)
2. “20-30 young…” you should not start sentence with numbers per AMA
3. Numbering superscript citations in the text is incorrect in some places; should be 10,11 but not10-11
18 (20) Grammar/writing [1] The writing was concise, but sufficiently Missing or partially Missing or partially
style articulated all details; [2] Information meeting 1-2 element meeting > 1-2 element
presented consistently and logically; [3] the from “excellent” from “excellent”
text was written accurately, was easy to read,
and not in medical chart-like format (for case
reports); [4] the text was formatted according
to guidelines; [5] the text was free of typos,
medical chart jargon; [6] verb tenses and
pronouns were used properly; [7] all acronyms
were used correctly and were not overused; [8]
people-first language was used;
4. Verb tenses should be consistent withing each section of the manuscript

88 Great job, Melissa! I wish you had shown your rough draft before the final
submission. Many of my comments could have been easily addressed.
