I immigrated to the United States from Taiwan when I was eight.

I only knew
some English and it is not my native language. I was not familiar with the people
surrounding me. However, I became bilingual and acquainted with my surroundings
through enlightening education and a handful of affectionate peers. It was very
different from what I had first expected: Taiwan’s education was focused on the
absorption of information, whereas education in the U.S. is to be capable of
independent and creative thinking.

I am an archery athlete. Through practice, I found out that my shooting accuracy

is astonishingly high. I would constantly need practice and competition experiences
while traveling between Taiwan, South Korea, and the U.S. Therefore, Stanford OHS
would be the best opportunity for me to practice full time without other distractions.
In the future, I am aspiring to represent the USA in the Olympics.

Working with the EV3 Mindstorms robot is a memorable experience and a step
towards artificial intelligence (AI) for me. Robotics requires analytical thinking. We
came up with a lot of different solutions on how to solve the tasks. Working with
robots sprouted my interest in artificial intelligence. My career goal is focused on
computer science, and more specifically, artificial intelligence. I’m also especially
interested in the Girls Can Code club at Stanford OHS. In the technology area, men
are a majority, and women are a minority. I believe that the minority should rise and
prove to the world that we are competent.

Currently, I have a project planned for high school. It’s called the Virtual &
Augmented Reality Archery project, which is a 3D experience program that could
help the user practice archery without the use of an actual bow. Through my
experiences of learning and practicing archery, I feel that this project could be helpful
to people who practice and people who just do it for fun. I have to apply math,
physics, and programming to achieve success.

One of Stanford’s strengths is its strong community. The community has

students that are either distinctive to each other or share multiple similarities.
However, people all over the world can be connected just by being part of this
school, Stanford OHS. I want to meet people that would inspire me in this community
as well as reciprocate this inspiration. I want to take part in this mission.
