Reel-A-Boom System

Operating Instructions

Safety Precautions: All safe boating regulations are applicable.

Reel-A-Boom System Deployment

The ”Tow End” of the boom is the end of the boom with the pocket for the Compactis-rope outside the float.

1. Roll the Reel-A-Boom Reel to the deployment location. Flip the travel handle over to the opposite side
of the reel, lifting the wheels off of the deck. Remove the boom cover, fold and set aside. Lock (weight)
down the handle, stabilize the reel handle for boom deployment.

2. Untie the tow line from the reel frame to allow reel to free-wheel. Throw the free end of the tow line to
the boat operator.

3. Signal the boat to go forward slowly to extend the remaining tow line and tow bridle.

4. Untie the simple half knot Compacti-rope, releasing the loose rope into the boom float cavity.

5. As the boat pulls the boom of of the reel, the boom will expand and inflate and the Compacti-rope will
be drawn out of the pocket and feel automatically into the boom. As the boom is deployed, it will
continue to inflate automatically at atmospheric pressure until expanded to its full operating length and
diameter.

6. As the next sections of boom are expanded, repeat Steps 4 & 5 until all the boom has been deployed
from the reel.

7. Allow the reel to continue turning at a controllable rate until the reel end tow bridle and rope unwind
from the reel as well. When fully deployed, unhook the reel end tow line from the reel frame. If there is
no need for all seven 25’ sections of boom to be deployed, you can stop the deployment at any time,
pull the toggle pins, unhook the Z-type end connectors to release custody of the deployed boom to the
boat operator and secure the remaining boom to the reel for storage.

8. Tow the Reel-A-Boom System where needed and anchor to a buoy in place.

9. The Reel-A-Boom System is now fully deployed for oil spill containment operations.

10. Remove any measures used to secure the reel handle, flip the reel handle over to the rolling transport
mode to lower the wheels and with the folded cover in hand, roll the reel to a temporary storage area.

Reel-A-Boom System Recovery

This will usually require three people.

1. Detach the anchors from the Reel-A-Boom and tow the boom system to shore with the reel end of the
boom coming to shore first. Throw the reel end tow line to a shore side recover person.

2. Roll the Reel-A-Boom reel to the recovery location with the folded cover in hand. Set the cover aside.
Flip the reel handle over to opposite side, thereby lifting the wheels off the deck. Lock down and secure
the reel recovery handle in place for boom recovery. Tie the reel end tow line to the reel frame and
manually rotate the reel to recover the tow line and tow bridle up to the reel end connector of the first
section of the Reel-A-Boom system.

3. Lay the aluminum Z-type connector flat on the core of the reel, close to one side, but it still does not
interfere with the spokes of the wheels.

4. To begin compacting the boom onto the reel, one person should take hold of the Compacti-rope close
to the brass grommet at the tow end of that section and hold the line taut from there to the reel while the
second (and third person if necessary) compact the boom accordion like up the Compacti-rope to the
reel end of that section, neatly folding the skirt and chain hem alongside, until that 25’ section is fully
compacted to a length of less than 6’. When all compactions are complete, that section of boom should
be less than 6’ long, a compaction ratio of about 4:1 to the uncompacted length. The person holding
the rope should now have almost 25’ of rope outside the boom. While that section of the boom is held
compacted, the person with the Compacti-rope can tie the rope with a half slip knot to/through the fabric
loop at the end connector (as the original system was shipped) to keep the boom compacted in a way
that can easily be released for the next deployment. He can then fan-fold the whole rope into

approximately 6” loops which he can stuff into the storage pocket at the tow end of the boom and close
the Velcro pocket.

5. While compacting the boom, the skirt and chain should be neatly folded back and forth to match the
compaction of the float section and coils. While that section of the boom is held compacted, the person
with the Compacti-rope can tie the rope with a half slip knot to/through the fabric loop at the end
connector (as the original system was shipped) to keep the boom compacted in a way that will easily
release for the next deployment.

6. The rope handler can then fan-fold the whole rope into approximately 6” loops which he can stuff into
the storage pocket at the tow end of the boom starting from the end of the rope and ending with the
rope closest to the loop tie knot and close the Velcro pocket.

7. Recover the boom to the reel by turning the reel until the reel end, end connector of the next section is
between the flanges.

8. Repeat steps 4 thru 7 with each section of boom until all the boom has been recovered to the reel.

9. Turn the reel slowly to finish recovering the tow end bridle and tow rope to the reel. Continue to rotate
the wheel in order to secure the excess tow line around the other boom components. Secure the reel
tow line to the reel frame. Wrap protective cover around the boom and cinch tight. Reel-A-Boom
System is now ready for next deployment.

10. Release the reel handle, flip it over to lower the wheels and roll the Reel-A-Boom System to storage
area for next deployment.
