POLLING IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Local and national polls, chiefly pre-electoral,


conducted in the 1950s and 1960s
• First social survey poll done in 1985 by
SWS/DAP
• Pulse Asia Inc. established in 1999. Conduct
of regular quarterly Ulat ng Bayan (Report of
the People) and periodic pre-election/exit poll,
as well as other social science surveys and
research
Survey functions
ü Generate opinions, knowledge, attitude, and sources/bases of
opinions of the public
ü Provides leaders/decision-makers a sense of the people’s
pulse; assess responsiveness of government/political leaders;
and what needs to be done to alter their
opinions/beliefs/preferences
ü For electoral surveys, enable users to know historical and
future voting behavior; opinion on election related issues;
electoral preference; likelihood of changing preference.
