The existence of the WV’s SOP for the DHC-8 is essential for the safe operation of our virtual fleet.
This SOP will try to provide a common language for individuals who opt for an “as real as it gets”
experience. The SOP describes the skill and knowledge required to complete a normal procedure,
briefing or maneuver. The SOP is and should not be difficult to follow. This is so everyone can try to
use it and ensure that regulations are complied with and repetitive errors are eradicated.
The text may be displayed under 2 different headings as follow:
1. Airmanship
(The Airmanship Section will be written in Italics to give it a distinct look in the SOP
document.)
Airmanship is described as “Aviation Common Sense”. It is a concept which combines a pilot’s
professionalism, aviation knowledge, maturity and self-awareness in its definition. It is the
bedrock of a safe and efficient pilot.
Standard Operating Procedures exist to enhance airmanship not to suppress it. SOPs
promote situational awareness and highlight threats, errors or omissions. If ever there is
a conflict between the SOP and good Airmanship then the pilot must resolve that conflict
using good judgment. Once any such conflict is resolved the default position should always
be to revert to SOP.

2. “Section Title”
The section title will contain the WV’s preferred means of completing the SOP. A pilot who
uses the section title diligently will comply with the SOP and achieve its objective. It will
contain proven, compliant, professional and efficient means of completing the SOP. Section
titles are shown in normal text.

This chapter contains Normal procedures based around the Majestic Dash 8 Q400 Pro Edition for
FSX and P3D. This is normalized for a two-man operation with shared cockpit. It is possible to use
this for all Q400’s in flight simulators, but do keep in mind not everything may have a function in your
plane! (If you have the Majestic Dash 8 then it should be no problems!) Do not use this for the -100,
Q200 and Q300! Do not use this for real world operations!

Controls and indications appear in all UPPERCASE type to correspond to the words on the control
panel or display. For example the following item has UPPERCASE words to match what is found on
the panel.
MAIN BUS TIE………………….………………….……………………..…..…..……………….…………TIE
The following appears in all lower case because there are no words identifying the panel name.
Interior lights.………………….………………….……………………..…..…..……………....… As required

The autopilot panel (From now on called AFCS panel) has two columns of buttons; the buttons on the
left are for controlling the vertical modes, and the buttons on the right are the lateral modes. The
function of rest of the of the controls at this panel will change depending on the mode selected.
Lateral modes:
WINGS LEVEL: This mode will become active if the AP engages, but no lateral mode was active. In
10 seconds this mode ill automatically transition either to ROLL HOLD if the current bank angle is >3
degrees, or HDG HOLD if the ban is less than that value. The WINGS LEVEL mode commands the
FD to maintain the wings level.
ROLL HOLD: This mode will maintain the current bank angle. This mode will automatically transistion
to WINGS LEVEL, should the bank angle become less than 3 degrees. If required, after engaging the
mode, the goal roll angle can be altered by using the Tactile Control Steering.
HDG HOLD: Will hold the heading, which the aircraft was flying at the time of transition to this mode,
the goal heading can be altered by using the Tactile Control Steering.
NAV: NAV mode uses the HSI needle to steer the aircraft. For the NAV mode to operate, the selected
nav source must be valid, and its needle must be alive (show a less than maximum deviation). The
nav source which the AFCS will use for the guidance is the one, shown at the selected PFD (HSI).
Available NAV sources can be cycled using the “NAV SOURCE” select knob. If the selected nav
source is valid at the time of engaging the mode, and the needle is already alive, the mode will
instantly become available, otherwise the HDG SEL will become the active mode, and heading bug
will have to be used to set the desired interception angle. The NAV Mode will remain armed until the
needle starts to move, after which it will become an active mode and will commence the tracking of
the radial. NAV Mode is used for VOR navigating, ILS landings, RNAV Landings and LNAV
navigating.

15/5/2018 DHC-8-Q402 SOP-WV Page | 5

APPR: Operation of this mode is similar to the operation of the NAV mode, with the exception that the
FMS nav source cannot be used to operate in this mode, and the FGM nav source cannot be used to
operate this mode, and the FGM will apply greater sensitivity to allow for a more precise approach
using the selected VOR or LOC nav source. The indication for this mode is “VOR APP” for VOR, or
“LOC” for the Localizer.
BC (Back Course): This mode is only applicable to the LOC type of the nav source, and will command
the flight director to track the localizer outwards. It is typically used to fly the Back Course Localizer
Approaches.
STBY: Pressing this button will cancel the current lateral mode and select WING LEVEL mode as
active if the Autopilot is currently flying the plane, otherwise the material mode become blank.
Vertical modes:
PITCH HOLD: This mode will automatically activate upon engaging the autopilot if no previous
vertical mode was selected. In this mode the flight director statically command the pitch, active at the
moment of autopilot engaging, or at the time of the Tactile Control Steering disengagement. This is
also the mode, FGM will revert to, should any other vertical mode become disengaged either
manually or automatically. The indication for this mode is “PITCH HOLD”
GA (Go Around): GA mode is a modification of the pitch mode, which is pre-set to show the pitch of
10 degrees nose up. The GA mode can be selected by pressing the TO/GA button at the sides of the
Power Levers. The indication for this mode is “GA”
IAS (Indicated Air Speed): IAS mode is an active mode that maintains the airspeed measured at the
time of the mode engagement, by altering the planes attitude. The airspeed that IAS mode maintains
can be altered by turning the Pitch Wheel in the middle of the AFCS panel, or by using the Tactile
Control Steering. The indication for this mode is “IAS”
VS (Vertical Speed): VS Stands for “Vertical Speed” mode, and will command the flight director
attitude to maintain the vertical speed, measured at the time of mode engagement. The goal vertical
speed can be altered by turning the Pitch Wheel, or by using the Tactile Control Steering. The
indication for this mode is “VS”
GS (Glideslope): Glideslope mode is armed automatically if an APPR mode with the ILS source
become active (LOC is indicated). The airplane will then follow the vertical path down to the runway
when the glideslope is alive. If the GS is out of range, then the mode will go back to armed. If any
conditions aren’t present, then the GS will disengage and the FGM will reverse to PITCH HOLD
VNAV: The VNAV mode is the only vertical mode that is linked to a nav source. When the FMS nav
source is selected, the lateral mode is LNAV, and the FMS VNAV guidance is available, pressing
VNAV button will activate the VNAV as an armed or active mode, depending upon the deviation
shown by VNAV needle on the PFD. Should any of the conditions listed above suddenly cease to
exist, this mode is “VNAV”
15/5/2018 DHC-8-Q402 SOP-WV Page | 6
ALT: The ALT mode requires a particular attention, as its operation on this aircraft is different then
how it is on most other aircraft types. In particular, this mode works differently, depending upon how
other aircraft types. In particular, this mode works differently, depending upon how exactly it is was
engaged. Pressing it will set the current altitude as a goal and will guide the FD to hold the current
altitude. It will also be automatically set if the ALT SEL is armed
ALT SEL: This mode can only exist as the armed mode. When an altitude is selected, then the ALT
mode will be automatically selected when the aircraft has reached the goal altitude.
STBY: Pressing STBY will revert to the PITCH HOLD mode if the autopilot is currently engaged, or
blank the mode completely otherwise.

There are two Flight Management Systems in this airplane. Each system consists of the following
components:
- Flight Management Computer
- Multifunctional Display Unit (MCDU)
- GPS Receiver
- Interface Module
In addition, both Flight Management Computers are using the speed data from a single Inertial
Reference System (IRS).
The Universal UNS1E FMS can provide the following functionality:
- Vertical and Lateral Navigation
- Situation awareness
- Flight planning and fuel management
- Control of the environment (Announcements, Music and Ground Services)
You can read more about the MCDU in Majestic Q400 manual.

Good Airmanship dictates that a pilot will complete this procedure carefully and diligently. The aircraft is
potentially dangerous to any crewmember, service provider or engineer until this procedure has been
completed. Many lives, limbs and licenses have been lost in and around an aircraft that had not been made
Safe by a checklist and procedure such as this. NOTE: If you are on an AFIS controlled airfield (For
example Hammerfest or Sogndal), then please follow this guide for AFIS procedures on VATSIM.

This checklist will go step on step into how to start the Q400 from cold and dark. Therefore, before
preflight, you will have to put the plane into cold and dark. If you are using the MJCQ400, then you
can do this by going to the Majestic Control Panel and into Flight Config.
Another thing you should do before start, is to set up fuel and payload. You will have to remember
these values, so I would recommend if you don’t have a program to keep track of these values to
write them down.

Perform the following checks before assuming normal crew positions

“Above 80 knots takeoff will only be rejected for:

- Fire or fire warning.
- Engine failure.
- Predictive windshear warning.
- Airplane is unsafe or unable to fly.”
“Before V1 on rejected takeoff I will:
- Simultaneously close the thrust levers
- Apply maximum manual breaking
- Apply maximum reverse thrust and stop the aircraft. I will set the parking brake.
- Select flaps up when the parking brake has been set
- Inform ATC of the reject”

Very few RTOs result in passenger evacuation. Flight Safety Foundation figures suggest that
approximately 90% of evacuations are performed without due cause and that almost 100% of
evacuations involve death or serious injury. It follows that an evacuation is not a ‘default option’ but is
in fact a dangerous maneuver which should be performed only when the situation truly demands it.
Good airmanship requires that all opportunities are taken to obtain and evaluate any available
information prior to initiating an evacuation such that the best possible decision is reached. It further
follows that, since evacuations will only thus be initiated for sound reasons, they should always be
followed through to the completion of all QRH actions.

The Dash 8 almost never needs to get a pushback. This is because it’s really easy to turn using
thrust, nose wheel steering and differential breaking. If you are in a position where you can’t turn after
start, then request a pushback.
