Schools deserve to know exactly what kids are doing while on school premises.

Schools should
start monitoring kids while at school. There has been much debate on whether schools should
monitor kids or not, but the truth is that monitoring them comes with many more benefits. This
could help save not just one, but multiple lives. Monitoring the students can help prevent
people from committing suicide or self-harm. It also helps discipline kids that may be doing
something they are not supposed to be doing. Not only that but monitoring them could also
help find victims of bullying and their harassers.
To begin with, watching over the kids could help save them. It could help save them from any
dangers that the internet poses. It has already done so, In Source 1 paragraph 3 the author
states that “The school district went with the firm Geo Listening after a pilot program with the
company last spring helped a student who was talking on social media about "ending his life"
They helped prevent a very suicide. If they had not caught that, who knows what the student
would have done? Not only could they save just 1 one life, but they could also save multiple
teachers' and students' lives. In Source 1 paragraph 7, the author wrote that “to see whether
students are researching topics about dangers such as school violence.” Schools could catch
threats to the students and teachers. They could help prevent a great danger before it occurs.
In Source 2 paragraph 22 the author claims that “While school districts may take on more
obligations and risk by monitoring, they may be willing to take that risk if it means they can
catch things … before they happen.” People think that it takes too long, or it is not worth it to
go over every single threat. However, schools should be willing to do anything to help prevent
danger to students. Even if it takes time to do so.
Furthermore, watching over the students can help catch them doing terrible things. schools will
be able to properly discipline them because you will be able to see exactly what they did and
what they were doing. Clearly stated by the author in source 2 paragraph 8 “You can identify a
student, and you can jump into their activity logs and see exactly what they've typed, exactly
where they've gone, exactly what they've done, and it gives you some history that you can go
back to that child and use some disciplinary action” This way, the schools will be able to give
them the right and reasonable punishment. You could prevent kids from starting school fights or
doing illegal behavior. As stated in source 1 paragraph 7, “allow users to search keywords
connected to cyberbullying and drug use, and to see whether students are researching topics
about dangers such as school violence.” People may think it will take too long to search every
chat and that it is not in the teacher’s training duty, but it is incredibly easy. They could do it just
by typing some keywords out on activity logs. Therefore, monitoring the students will help keep
a safe environment for the teachers and students. This might also help prevent a student from
creating horrible life-changing decisions like drug abuse.
Monitoring students can also help with cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a ridiculously huge issue
but can be prevented. Cyberbullying can happen everywhere and at any time; It can affect
anyone. The first survey shown in Source 4 proves that cyber bullying can be easily tackled by
the users of the platform. Cyberbullying can happen because of the users but can also be
prevented by the users. The second survey shows that it can happen anywhere, especially on
extremely popular social media apps. It is scary how much and how easy it is for cyberbullying
to occur. Schools can help catch that and can use it to help educate students on the dangers of
cyberbullying. As stated in Source 2 paragraph 11, “On one hand, social media monitoring of
students could help education institutions identify cyberbullying, self-harm posts and illegal
behavior. It could also give them opportunities to teach students about responsible social media
use that benefits both students and institutions.” Both parties could benefit from educating
students on these dangers. People think it might create more of a disciplinary mindset than an
education mindset, and it is not the teacher's responsibility may say that it is all just online and
should not matter. But cyberbullying could seriously haunt and harm someone mentally.
Cyberbullying can so easily be prevented if schools just take the time to monitor their students'
online activities and educate them on how to deal with it.
In short, Monitoring should be seriously considered by schools. Monitoring students comes with
many benefits. It can help with saving multiple lives, can help prevent tragedies, and can help
prevent cyberbullying. Consequently, it also comes with some cons, like taking too much time to
search online activity or not being in teachers' training of duty but schools should be willing to
deal with them in order to keep their school safe for everyone. Watching students is extremely
helpful and should be necessary for all schools to do.
