you have 32-bit Visio, install the 32-bit Symmetry platform. Similarly, if you have 64-bit Visio, install
64-bit Symmetry.

You are ready to install Symmetry.

4.2 Installing Symmetry

Warning:

Are you installing the MSI installer on a computer that already has Symmetry, VMGSim or VMGThermo
installed –and are unsure which installer was used to install this previous version?

Ensure to uninstall any versions of Symmetry, VMGSim or VMGThermo that you are planning on
overwriting if you don’t know what installer was used. Problems can arise when you install an MSI
format installer overtop of an EXE.

This problem does not exist if you have previously installed the VMG product using an MSI format
installer. This problem also does not exist if you are installing into a new folder.

1. Browse to the location where you downloaded the installation files.

2. From the downloaded files, run the Install_Symmetry_x##_####.#-COM+##.msi installer.
3. Choose a language and click OK.
4. On the Welcome panel, click Next.
5. On the License Agreement panel, read the agreement, click I agree, and click Next.

6. On the Choose Install Location panel, choose the folder where you want to install Symmetry,
and then click Next.
7. Click Install. When the installation is finished, click Finish on the Completed panel.

4.3 Uninstalling Symmetry

You can uninstall Symmetry from the Control Panel.

4.3.1 Uninstalling Symmetry from the Control Panel

1. Click the Start button > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
2. In the list of currently installed programs, click Symmetry, and then click Uninstall.

4.4 MSI Switches

4.4.1 Installing Without User Intervention (Silent Install)

The following switches can be used with the MSI installer:

• Silent Install Switch: ‘/qn’

Properties:
o ‘INST_PATH’ to override the default installation directory, and
o ‘UPGRADE_ALL’ to uninstall all MSI installations of Symmetry before installing the
current version
Special requirements for silent installation:
o If installing under silent mode, the installer will not install on top of an NSIS (EXE)
installation of the program –a different installation directory is required.
o The installer will not install Symmetry on top of VMGSim regardless of the installer
format used. It is recommended to uninstall all versions of VMGSim before installing
Symmetry.
o If the installation directory already contains an MSI installation of the program, then the
UPGRADE_ALL flag must be set –otherwise, the installation will fail.
o The full path to the installer must be used, without a "\" at the end.
o The commands must be executed with administration privileges, for example, if
applicable, the DOS prompt must be evoked with elevated privileges.

Sample command line uses:

• To create a log file and install to a default installation directory, which cannot already contain a
VMG Product (NSIS or MSI installation):

msiexec /log logsilent.txt /qn /I Install_Symmetry_#(##).msi

Where #s corresponds with the specific installer name. Include full path of installer where
applicable.

• To install to the “Symmetry_testSilent” directory, which cannot already contain a VMG Product
(NSIS or MSI installed)

msiexec /log logsilent.txt /qn /i Install_Symmetry_#(##).msi

INST_PATH=”C:\Program Files(x86)\VMG\Symmetry_testSilent\”

Include a \at the end of the full Installation Path.

• To uninstall all MSI installations of Symmetry, then install to the default installation directory,
which cannot already contain an NSIS (EXE) installed Symmetry:

msiexec /log logsilent.txt /qn /I Install_Symmetry_#(##).msi

UPGRADE_ALL=1

• To uninstall all MSI installations of Symmetry, then install to the “Symmetry_testSilent”

directory, which cannot already contain an NSIS installation of Symmetry:

msiexec /log logsilent.txt /qn /i Install_Symmetry_#(##).msi

INST_PATH=”C:\Program Files(x86)\VMG\Symmetry_testSilent\”
UPGRADE_ALL=1

5 Licensing Symmetry

After you installed Symmetry, you must install the licenses and define which modules are accessible.

Note:

It is recommended that the Schlumberger Licensing Tool is installed on every device attempting to run
Symmetry, for ease of configuration as well as troubleshooting.

5.1 Downloading the Schlumberger Licensing Tool

It is recommended to install the most recent version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool provided by the
following two options:

1. The latest version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool may be downloaded from the Software
Download Center:
a. Go to the Support Portal.
b. Log in to the site.
c. From the right pane of the Support Portal main page, click Download under Software
Download Center (SDC).
d. On the Welcome Message page, click Continue.

e. In the Product Group Name list (in the upper-left corner), click More Supported
Products > Utilities > FLEXlm.
f. In the table of FLEXlm downloads, click the Download icon for the Schlumberger
Licensing tool file you need.
i. Note: It is recommended to install the Schlumberger Licensing 202X.X product,
including the server device. The Server Only Package is a version of the
Schlumberger Licensing system that does not contain the Schlumberger
Licensing Tool application interface and is only recommended for use on the
versions of Windows Server that do not support the Schlumberger Licensing
Tool.
2. Alternatively, a version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool installer is also distributed with the
Symmetry installation. To locate the installer, navigate to the Symmetry installation folder under
the redist folder and locate the file SchlumbergerLicensing202X.exe.

5.2 Installing the Schlumberger Licensing Tool

1. Run the installer SchlumbergerLicensing202X.exe. The installation wizard opens.
2. On the Welcome panel, click Next.
3. Complete the following steps in the Destination Folder panel:
a. If you want to change the location of the program files, click Change and then
navigate to a new location. If you are installing on a central license server, select a
folder on the central license server.
b. Click Next.
4. On the Ready to install panel, click Install.
5. When the installation is complete, on the last panel select Launch Schlumberger Licensing
and then click Finish. You are ready to configure the Symmetry license.

5.3 CodeMeter Dongle Licensing

There are two possible FLEXlm license types; the MAC Tied License, which requires the MAC address of
the device that is intended to host the license, and the CodeMeter Dongle License, which requires a
physical CodeMeter USB Dongle to be inserted on the device hosting the license.

If you were not provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle and provided the MAC Address of the device for
generation of the license, then your license is likely a MAC Tied License, and you may proceed straight to
the “Configuring the License” section:

If you were not provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle do not perform the CodeMeter Dongle Licensing
steps.

If you did not provide a MAC Address of a device for generation of the license and were instead
provided a CodeMeter USB Dongle you must perform the following sections prior to configuring the
license. These steps should be performed on the device that the CodeMeter Dongle will be plugged in
to.

Note: The MAC address license server upgrade to CodeMeter Dongle license must be explicitly
requested to your Account Manager.

5.3.1 Downloading the CodeMeter runtime installer
It is recommended to install the most recent version of the CodeMeter Runtime provided by the
following two options:

1. The latest version of the CodeMeter Runtime may be downloaded from the following link:
https://www.wibu.com/uk/support/user/downloads-user-software.html
a. Under the CodeMeter User Download heading choose the CodeMeter User Runtime for
Windows and keep the default selection from the dropdown (for Windows 32/64-Bit).
Click the download button to download the installer.
2. Alternatively, a version of the CodeMeter Runtime installer is also distributed with the
Symmetry installation. To locate the installer, navigate to the Symmetry installation folder under
the redist folder and locate the file CodeMeterRuntime.exe.

5.3.2 CodeMeter Runtime Installation

1. Once downloaded, double click CodeMeterRuntimeXX.exe.
2. When the installation wizard opens, follow the instructions clicking Next on each window to
proceed.
3. Install the runtime and when installation is completed click Finish.

5.4 Configuring the License

For the purposes of this section, a ‘client device’ refers to the user device that is running the Symmetry
application, while a ‘server device’ refers to a separate device within the network that may be used to
host the license for use by one or more client devices.

Licenses may be hosted directly on the client device, or they may be hosted on a server device:

• If the license is intended to be hosted directly on the client device, perform the “Configuring the
Licensing System” section on the client device.
• If the license is intended to be hosted on a server device, perform the “Configuring the Licensing
System” section on that server device, then perform the “Referencing the License Server”
section on the client device.

5.4.1 Configuring the Licensing System

1. Save the provided license file (*.lic) to a static location on your device.
2. If you are using a CodeMeter Dongle License, insert the dongle into the USB port of your
computer.
3. Run the Schlumberger Licensing Tool program (located by default in: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Schlumberger\Schlumberger Licensing\202X.X\SLBLicensing.exe)
a. Note: You must run the Schlumberger Licensing Tool via Right Click + Run As
Administrator in order to have access to the option to Start Automatically with
Windows.
4. Click Add license file/folder and browse to the directory where you saved the license file.
5. Choose the file/folder and validate by clicking OK.

Copyright © 2023 Schlumberger. All rights reserved. 9

6. If desired, select the Start Automatically with Windows checkbox for the license to be
automatically available every time you restart your computer.
7. Click Start to start the license service.
a. Note: A window might open informing you that the changes are immediately applied,
and that the setting is written in the operating system registry: click OK to continue.
8. Click OK to save your license configuration.

The license server is set to @localhost. This is the address used by the application when attempting to
find licenses on the local computer. You do not need to make changes if you only have a local license
server.

Click Status to display the licenses available and to check any potential issue with the license features.

In case of issue, click Diagnostics to obtain more information on the license file(s) and the license server
and to enable the access to the FlexNet debug log file. The Solution number 7532786 – “General License
Troubleshooting Steps for Symmetry” on the Support page describes the known issues and resolutions.
If you cannot solve the issue and are contacting Schlumberger support, please always provide the items
mentioned in step 5 of the Solution mentioned, including the contents of the diagnostics.

5.4.2 Referencing the License Server

If the license is hosted on a server device, the “Configuring the Licensing System” steps should have
been performed on the server device. The remaining steps to reference that license server can be
performed on the client device.

To connect to a license server, Schlumberger applications require the server address. The address is of
the form portnumber@machine.domain or portnumber@IP_address. For example, if the server is
named server1 and using port number 27010, the address is 27010@server1. If you do not know the
license server address, contact your system administrator.

Note:

If the license server has been configured with a port number within the default range of 27000–27009
the port number can be omitted. In this case, @server1 will also be a valid address.

1. Run the Schlumberger Licensing Tool program (located by default in: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Schlumberger\Schlumberger Licensing\202X.X\SLBLicensing.exe)
2. Enter the server details in the Manage Remote Servers panel.
a. The address is of the form portnumber@machine.domain or portnumber@IP_address.
3. Click Add license server to update the environment variable.
a. To remove the license server details, if desired, select the entry in the list and click
Remove license server.
4. Click OK to close the license configuration.

Click Status in the Schlumberger Licensing Tool to display the licenses available and to check any
potential issue with the license features.
