Introduction
Staying at home might not always seem very appealing,
especially if you’re used to taking photos in the great outdoors.
Boredom is a natural feeling. If you’re stuck in a creative rut,
don’t beat yourself up!

Fortunately, you can overcome boredom and take great

photos without leaving your home. If you have extra time
on your hands, try some of these ideas. At the end of your
photoshoot, you might end up feeling more inspired than ever!

#1 Create a Time-Lapse
Video From Your Window
Time-lapse photography involves taking photographs every
few seconds or minutes. The result is a short video that
shows the passing of time in a given place. If your
camera doesn’t have a time-lapse feature, you can manually
take photographs every few seconds or minutes. Make sure
to use a tripod so that your camera is always in the same spot.

(Bonus tip: the shorter your intervals, the more movements

you’ll be able to capture.)

One of the best places to start is your window! Find a view that
you like. It doesn’t have to be the most extravagant view in the
world, but it should have some kind of movement. This can
be trees swaying in the wind, cars driving on a busy street, or
people walking.

This is a great way to pass the time and to create something

that’s different to what you usually photograph.
5

#2 Try a Completely
Different Genre
If you already specialize in a genre, like landscape photography,
you probably have your own way of approaching your
photoshoots. While it’s good to have experience in a specific
niche, it’s important to leave your comfort zone from time to
time. This might be exactly what you need to stop feeling
bored at home.

One of the simplest ways to leave your comfort zone is to

try something that you’ve never tried before. If you
specialize in portrait photography, try taking photographs of
the sky from your window. If you’re good at photographing
your pet, take photos of yourself with a smartphone.

These exercises will feel uncomfortable at first, but they might

end up giving you all sorts of exciting ideas!
6

#3 Take Photos in Every

Room
This is an exercise that helped me get out of my creative rut
a few years ago. I took photographs of myself in almost every
room in my apartment. Yes, even in the kitchen!

It felt strange at first but, eventually, I started to see potential in

things that I used to ignore. I ended up finding a lot of inspiration
in my kitchen light, the painting above my desk, and the texture
of my wallpaper. These seemingly mundane things helped me
take photographs that I was happy to share online.

You don’t necessarily have to take photographs of yourself,

but it’s a good place to start. No matter where you live, there’s
something in your home that would look good in a picture.
Think outside the box and don’t be afraid of trying
something new.

#4 Make Your Own DIY

Studio Using Cardboard
Product photography enthusiasts, this one’s for you! If you
don’t have a studio at home, you can easily create one
with the help of cardboard or a computer screen. If you
have a piece of cardboard at home, paint it a neutral colour,
like black or white. This will be your backdrop.

Alternatively, you can use a computer screen as your backdrop.

Open an image that you’d like to use as a backdrop. If you
don’t have your own photographs for this, you can use a free
stock photo website like Unsplash.

Experiment with textured, abstract, and vibrant backgrounds.

When you’re done, place your subject in front of the computer
screen. Make sure it’s not too close to the screen. Use a wide
aperture, such as f/2.5, to create a nicely blurred background.

#5 Turn Off Image Preview

Most cameras show a preview of an image as soon as it’s
taken. If you’re a perfectionist like me, you might get caught
up in this and waste a lot of time. This can result in feeling
insecure, indecisive, and bored.

Instead of previewing every single image, focus on how you

feel during the photoshoot. If possible, turn off the auto preview
function in your camera. Your priority should be having a
good time and expressing yourself in any way you like!

#6 Have a Video Call

Photoshoot
Sometimes, boredom goes hand-in-hand with loneliness. If
you’re feeling uninspired at home, have a video call
photoshoot with a friend!

Many photographers have tried this method during the

pandemic. It has helped them connect with the world around
them and find a sense of normalcy in their chaotic lives. Some
photographers have shoots with professional models, while
others have fun sessions with their friends.

You might not end up sharing your results online, but you’ll
have the opportunity to let loose, connect with a friend, and
take photos for the fun of it.

#7 Use a Manual Camera

App to Improve Your
Smartphone Photography
Skills
Smartphone photography shouldn’t be underestimated
in today’s modern world. If you’re feeling bored, why not
improve your smartphone photography skills? This is a great
way to boost your online photography business, take your
Instagram feed to the next level, and improve your general
photography skills.

If you want to have more control over your images, use a

manual camera app. A manual camera app will give you more
settings, which will enable you to take more professional-
looking photographs at home. I recommend Manual for iOS
users and ProCam X Lite for Android users.

#8 Document Your Daily

Routine
Photo series are a great way to document routines,
relationships, events, and much more. They can be short-
term or long-term projects.

This type of project is very inspiring because it can help you

focus intensely on one theme. It can also help you look
at your world from a completely different perspective.
Sounds pretty refreshing, right?

You can start by documenting your daily routine at home.

You might be surprised by how interesting your life actually is!
When you take the time to appreciate every moment in your
day, whether it’s brushing your teeth or calling a friend, you
might find that boredom is no longer an issue.
12

#9 Re-Create a Movie Scene

This is your excuse to watch a fun movie or TV show! Try to
re-create a scene from one of your favorite films. Your
photo doesn’t have to look exactly like the scene. You might
want to capture a specific atmosphere, expression, or color
tone. The point is to have a reference that can help you create
something original.

You can also use this as an opportunity to improve

your editing skills. There are many online tutorials that
teach photographers how to make their photographs look
more cinematic. The process is usually simple but effective.

#10 Collaborate With

Photographers Online
One of the best ways to beat boredom is to interact with like-
minded people. There are thousands of online photography
communities, including ViewBug, where you can meet people
with whom you can collaborate. There’s no limit to the kinds of
collaborations you can have!

Some photographers collaborate with digital artists who make

their photos look surreal. Others merge their photos to create
stunning double exposures. On ViewBug, you can join contests
and get inspired by other photographers’ submissions.

The best part about being a part of a community is that

you’ll never run out of ideas. There’s always something
new to discover and always someone new you can meet.
Even if you’re an introvert, I highly recommend joining a few
photography communities. This might be exactly what you
need to beat your boredom.
