Q1
The figure below shows two identical pendulums connected by a spring. ‘a’ is the distance of
the spring attachment point from the suspension point, and L is the length of the pendulum.
Take, L=0.4 m, a=0.2 m, m=0.6 kg, k=400 N/m. Take acceleration due to gravity to be 9.8
m/sec2.
a) Write the equations of motion of the system.
b) Find the natural frequencies in rad/sec and Hz and mode shapes of the system. Sketch
the mode shapes.
c) Find mass-normalized eigenvectors.
d) Let the system be disturbed with an initial displacement such that θ1 (0) = 100 and
θ2 (0) = 00 , with initial velocities being zero. Find the free vibration response of the
two pendulums. Give your observations about the response.

Q2
The mass, stiffness, and eigenvector matrices of a system (in SI units) are given below

Mass matrix Stiffness matrix Eigenvector matrix

0.8000 0 150 -50 0.7716 0.8091
0 0.5000 -50 90 1.0234 -0.9760

Harmonic forces of amplitudes 10 N and 4 N of 14 rad/sec frequency act on the two masses,
respectively.
Find modal masses, modal stiffnesses, and modal forces. Find also the modal responses and
physical responses. Write your observations about the results.

Q3
A rotating machine is to be installed on a structure at a certain location (location 1). The
machine's operating speed is 3000 RPM, and it has a rotating unbalance of 0.002 kg-m. Predict
the response at location 2 on the structure due to the unbalance force when the machine is
installed. The receptance FRF magnitude between these two locations is given in the figure
below.
