SECTION D ‘The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Ve An atom in its lowest energy state is said to be in the normal state or the ground state. The ground state is the most stable state for the atom. The filling of orbitals in the ground state is determined by the following rules: A. The aufbau principle, from the German Aufbauprinzip, also called the aufbau rule, states that in the ground state of an atom or ion, electrons fill subshells of the lowest available , then they fill subshells of higher energy. ' exclusion principle, from this it follows that an orbital cannot have more than two electrons. Moreover, if an orbital has two electrons then they must have opposite spins, >. Hund’ rule of maximum multiplicity, the basis of this rule is that two electrons in a particular orbital feel greater repulsion and hence while filling orbitals of equal energy pairing of electrons is avoided as long as it is possible. Moreover the singly occupied orbitals should have electrons with parallel spin because this corresponds to state of lower energy. Answer the following questions: a) Write the electronic configuration of Mn** and report the number of unpaired electrons in it. Periodic trends are specific pattems that are present in the periodic table that illustrate different aspects of a certain element. They were discovered by the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in the year 1863. Major periodic trends include atomic radius, ionization enthalpy, negative electron gain enthalpy, electronegativity, valency and metallic character. These trends exist because of the similar electronic configuration of the elements within their respective groups or periods and because of the periodic nature of the elements. these give a qualitative assessment of the properties of each element. Given below the general trends, though there are some exceptions. Characteristic Period Group Ionization enthalpy Increases Decreases Metallic property Decreases Increases Atomic radius Decreases Increases Electronegativity Increases Decreases Negative electron gain Increases Decreases enthalpy 33. 34, Shielding effect Increases Decreases Answer the following questions: ‘a) Show the correct increasing order of metallic character of the elements B, Al, Mg, K. b) Inbetween F and Cl, which has a more negative electron gain enthalpy? ©), Why Oxygen has lower first ionization enthalpy value than that of Nitrogen? 4) Mention two factors due to which the ionization enthalpy of the main group elements tends to decrease down the group’ OR, 4) Mention the increasing order of shielding effect of s, p, d, f orbitals.
