Something Special
My favorite class is art. Today the teacher
told us to draw something that was precious
to us. I wanted to ask the teacher what she
meant, but I didn’t. I’m a new student. It
is difficult to be the new kid. I just started
drawing.

Mia sits next to me. She leaned over and

looked at my drawing. Mia said, “That’s a
great design, Anjali. I’ve never seen anything
like it.”

I smiled and nodded.

Mia said, “I really like the bright colors

and shapes.”

Rangoli

I said, “Thanks. It’s called Rangoli. It

is a good luck symbol. We draw it to
celebrate Diwali.”

Mia asked, “Celebrate what?”

I smiled and said, “Diwali. It’s a festival.

It happens every year. We celebrate it with
lights, fireworks, and good food.”

Mia laughed and said, “That sounds

like fun.”

I wanted to invite Mia to celebrate the

Diwali festival with my family. Mia was
kind. I wanted to be friends with her.

STOP AND CHECK

How does Anjali

celebrate Diwali?

Light and Dark

After school, I asked Dad, “Can I invite
Mia over for Diwali?”

Dad said, “Of course.” He was preparing

Diwali lamps and lanterns.

“Mia might think Diwali is strange. She

doesn’t know anything about it,” I said.

Dad stopped what he was doing. “Why do

we put all these lamps out?”

“To light up the house!” I replied.

Dad smiled. “You are right. In our culture,

they are a tradition. They remind us that
learning new things is like ‘seeing the light.’
We believe it brings good luck. Everyone can
celebrate Diwali.”

The sentence ends with a

question mark (?). What type
of sentence is it?

I thought about what Dad said. “So

teaching Mia about Diwali is a good thing?”

Dad replied, “That’s right. Now the

entrance needs a big Rangoli.”
STOP AND CHECK

Why did Anjali’s family put

lamps outside their house?”

An Invitation
The next day, I saw Mia at recess. She
was with her friends. I didn’t have the
courage to invite her then.

So I stayed by myself and I ate my snack.

Later Mia came up to me and said, “I
looked up Diwali on the Internet. Diwali
means ‘row of lamps.’ Right?”

I was surprised. I said, “Yes, we put lights

around our house. The Diwali festival lasts
for five days.”

Mia exclaimed, “Five whole days! I wish
that my family did something like that.”

“You can come if you like.” I was worried.

I did not want to face disappointment.

But Mia smiled “I would love to come!”

The sentence ends in an

exclamation point (!). What
kind of sentence is this?

I said, “Sure, Dad said I could invite you.

Come tomorrow night. It will be fun.”

Mia said, “Great! I’ll ask Mom when I get

home. Will there be lots of food?”

I said laughing, “Of course!”

Looking at the Lights

The next night, our house looked
beautiful. The lamps on the driveway glowed.
There were strings of lights around the
windows. Before the party, I made a Rangoli
to put by the door to welcome everyone.

I looked out of the window. I was waiting
for Mia to arrive.

Finally, Mia and her dad walked up to the

house. “Happy Diwali,” Mia said.

Mia’s dad said, “You must be Anjali.

We’ve heard a lot about you.” Then he said,
“Wow! The decorations are something else.”

Mia showed her dad the Rangoli. She
explained to her dad what she had learned
about Diwali. I listened with pride.

Dad was right. Mia had learned something

new, and I had made a friend. It was all
thanks to Diwali.
