When Ben was 16, he wanted to write
for his brother’s newspaper. James would not

business. Ben published his own newspaper.
At that time, some people could not read
well. Ben put cartoons and pictures in his

people. When he was 21, he helped form
a group to make Philadelphia a better place
to live.

Ben Franklin created the first fire brigade
in Philadelphia. At the time, fire was an
enemy. It could destroy a neighborhood. Ben
and a group of people set up the Union
Fire Company. They bought pumps, ladders,
buckets, and other equipment to fight fires.
Ben’s idea made the city a safer place.
