Cabbage production
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea or variants) is a leafy green biennial, grown as an annual vege-
table for its dense-leaved heads. It descends from B. oleracea var. oleracea, a wild field cab-
bage. Cabbage heads generally range from 1 to 8 pounds (0.5 to 4 kg), and can be green,
purple and white. Smooth-leafed firm-headed green cabbages are the most common.
Description
Cabbage seedlings have a thin taproot and heart-shaped cotyledons. The first leaves pro-
duced are egg-shaped with a lobed petiole. Heads average between 1 and 8 pounds (0.5 and
4 kg), with earlier varieties producing smaller heads. Most cabbages have thick, alternating
leaves, with margins that range from wavy or lobed to highly dissected. Plants have root
systems that are fibrous and shallow.
Climate requirements
Cabbage is a biennial plant that grows best under full sunlight. The optimum mean
temperature for growth and quality head development is 15-18°C, with a minimum
temperature of 4°C and a maximum 24°C. Soil pH in the range of 6.0-6.5 is preferred, but
cabbage will tolerate a soil pH range of 5.5 to 6.8. Cabbage requires a consistent supply of
moisture, and should receive a minimum of 2.5 cm of water per week. Larger quantities may
be required when cabbage is grown on sandy soils or when evapo-transpiration is high

Propagation
Cabbage nursery
Sowing cabbages in a well-managed field nursery has the following advantages over direct
sowing in the field:
A protected location on the farm under Agrile row cover provides a good seedling
environment and minimises the risk of virus infections through whitefly infestations

and seedling stage

Minimised irrigation water use and salt accumulation in the field for the nursery pe-
riod between 3 and 4 weeks. This effectively reduces irrigation water consumption,
potential salt build-up and the leaching of nutrients from the root zone
Selection of strong evenly sized seedlings for transplanting and good production
Cabbage seedlings can be produced in the ground in nursery beds, in flat-cell trays or in Jif-
fy pots. Potting mix should be preferably mixed with water before packing the mix into the
trays or Jiffy pots. When seeds are started in cell trays, a good commercial potting mix
should be used to improve water and nutrient availability, provide correct aeration and mi-
nimise pests and diseases. In the field, cabbage nurseries can be established using a good
potting mix that provides appropriate soil conditioning. An Agrile row cover should be used
to protect seeds from excessive surface temperatures and disease carrying insects. Good ae-
ration, temperatures not exceeding 30⁰C and adequate moisture are necessary to encourage
rapid even germination of seeds and growth of seedlings. Over watering will result in seed
death from lack of oxygen leading to poor germination and should be avoided. Production
of cabbage seedlings in ground nurseries is generally not recommended as bare root trans-
plants are slow to establish in the field, lead to higher seedling mortality and reduce yield.
Moreover, it is difficult to maintain a root ball during the digging out process as the soil is
light and friable resulting in bare root seedlings for transplanting.
The nursery should be observed twice daily to make sure that optimum conditions are main-
tained during the germination and seedling development. Soon after emergence, the seedling
should be exposed to adequate sunlight to support good strong growth. Early detection of
problems allows a rapid response when extra water, nutrient or pesticide applications may
be required. Seedlings are ready for transplanting in approximately 4 weeks after sowing.
Soil preparation
The land should be clean cultivated eight weeks before planting and the ground must be
ploughed deeply, immediately before planting, with a disk harrow or other suitable imple-
ment to a depth of 450 to 600 mm. The soil should be fumigated two weeks before planting
time if necessary, to control nematodes.
Transplanting
Cabbage seedlings are transplanted into prepared rows at 40cm spacing between plants
within the rows. Whether seedlings to be transplanted are lifted from the nursery bed, from
seedling trays or Jiffy pots it is important that the roots are not disturbed and the soil sur-
rounding the roots maintained. Bare root transplants are discouraged as they will take longer
to establish in the field. Management of the young plants is easier than with bare-rooted
seedlings.

Planting
As the crop matures full ground cover is achieved improving water use efficiency
Seedlings should be transplanted as soon as they reach the desired size and only well-
hardened, young, stocky plants should be used. Transplanting is done on moist soil. The soil
around the roots should be firmed and irrigated as soon as possible after the seedlings rare
set. In wet areas, cabbage should be planted on raised beds or ridges to reduce water-logging
and stem or root rot diseases.
Plant population and spacing influence head size, head shape and yield. Cabbage plant pop-
ulations vary according to the target market for a particular crop. It has been reported that
cabbage forms smaller and slightly more pointed heads when they are spaced closely. Plant
populations of 16000/acre are suggested for large-headed types while for cultivars with me-
dium- sized heads, populations of 20,000 plants/acre are said to be ideal. For baby cabbage,

populations of 32,000 plants/acre is recommended. It is recommended that large-headed cul-
tivars should be planted 60cm to 70cm apart between rows and 45 cm apart within rows.
Smaller-headed varieties are planted 60 X 30 cm apart.
Fertilization
Cabbage is a heavy feeder and requires supplemental fertilization in the form of manure or
compost, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Fertiliser program should be based on soil
analyses and should be developed for each field. Cabbage requires 200 to 250 kg nitrogen
per hectare. Nitrogen is supplied in split applications, where 50 % to 66 % is broadcast and
ploughed in just before planting. The first application is made together with phosphorus and
potassium. The remainder is side-dressed two to three weeks after transplanting and again
three weeks later or applied once-off at about six weeks.
Cabbage also needs micronutrients for proper growth and development. The crop has a high
requirement of calcium and deficiencies of this nutrient may occur on acid soils, on soils
with very high potassium or on very dry soils.
Foliar sprays of calcium nitrate can be used to supply calcium. Magnesium may also be de-
ficient on acid soils, on very light soils or on soils that are very high in potassium. Spraying
the plants with 5 kg magnesium per hectare can rectify the problem.
Cabbage is very susceptible to molybdenum deficiency. Plants should be sprayed with 125 g
of sodium- or ammonium molybdate in 500l of water per hectare as soon as signs of defi-
ciency are noticed. The availability of molybdenum may be increased by providing enough
lime prior to planting. Iron may be applied with a foliar spray with 1 % iron sulphate or che-
late. The deficiency of iron is common on calcareous, alkaline soils. Manganese deficiencies
are prevalent on soils with a pH of more than 5.5. A foliar spray of 5 kg per hectare of man-
ganese sulphate or 2 to 3 kg/ha of manganese oxide is suggested as soon as symptoms of
deficiency are observed. Cabbage may have boron deficiencies in areas with high rainfall.
Three kilograms of Solubor are effective in controlling boron deficiency.
Young cabbage transplants or seedlings have a lower water requirement. However, water
requirement increases rapidly as complete canopy cover and head development occurs. Irri-
gation must be closely monitored to ensure soil moisture remains even in the beds during
the cropping period. It is particularly important in the days following transplanting when
seedlings are establishing new root systems. Excessive irrigation promotes root rot and re-
sults in leaching of nutrients away from the root zone. Supplying water in equal amounts
throughout the season prevents cracking of the heads.
Application of soluble fertilizer as fertigation can be carried out during a normal irrigation.
Continue irrigation for 5 minutes after fertigation to flush the system.

Many pest and disease problems can be avoided through Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
procedures.
The following will help to ensure any pests and diseases in your cabbage crop remain below
the economic threshold and swift action is taken should they become a problem.
This ensures your crop has natural resistance to pests and diseases, minimising the need for
expensive chemical control.
Row covering
These should be put up immediately after transplanting and left up for 10 – 15 days. They
protect your crop from numerous insect pests, such as caterpillars, aphids, leafhoppers, leaf
miners, beetles and white-flies.
Crop rotation
Do not plant cabbage more than once every 3 – 4 years in the same field. This will minimise
the risk of fungal and bacterial diseases such as bacterial black rot and fungal diseases such
as downy mildew, powdery mildew, white rot and damping off.
Soil solarisation
This should be carried out each summer prior to planting to help control soil borne patho-
gens, soil insects, weeds and root-knot nematodes.
Companion crops
Planting corn and squash as a trap crop around the borders of your cabbage crop keeps aph-
ids away, reducing the incidence of turnip mosaic virus.
Traps
Placing yellow and blue sticky traps and pheromone traps around your cabbage crop will
help control whitefly, leaf miners and caterpillars.
Removing and correctly destroying all crop residues immediately after harvest
This helps prevent last season’s pests re-infecting your new crop and will help to control
fungal and bacterial diseases, caterpillars, aphids and beetles.
Irrigate the beds prior to transplanting to stimulate germination of weed seeds. Remove all
weeds prior to transplanting.
Following planting, the field should be monitored regularly and kept free of weeds. Remove
weeds by hand at early growth stages of cabbage and before canopy covers over.
Crop monitoring

Cabbage crops should be monitored for pests and diseases every week. This is especially
important during the early stages of growth when cabbages are susceptible to pests and dis-
eases. Consistent monitoring enables a swift and effective response should an outbreak oc-
cur, which will minimize crop damage and expense. All manure put on the crop should be
thoroughly composted to prevent pest and disease outbreaks.
PEST CONTROL
Cabbage is attacked by several aphids but the grey cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae)
and the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) are the most common. Damage is caused when
they suck sap from the plant and contaminate the edible product. Feeding of the cabbage
aphid causes a chlorosis and malformation of the leaf.

yields can be seriously reduced by heavy infestation.

American bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera)
The larvae feed on the leaves. They cause severe damage in the early stages of growth by
destroying the growing points of the plants.

The cabbage looper larvae (caterpillars) chew holes in the leaves, and larger caterpillars
consume great amounts of plant material. On cabbage they eat into the heads, reducing the
marketability of the produce.

Red spider mites are found on the underside of leaves, where they weave a fine web. Dam-
age is caused by sucking, resulting in a bronzing and yellowing of leaves.

Cutworm(Agrotis spp.)
Cutworms cause damage when they cut off the stems of young seedlings close to ground
level.
Plusia looper feeds on the leaves and causes damage by cutting the foliage.
Thrips
Thrips tabaci is the most common species on cabbage. High populations of the insect con-
taminate the edible product, thus affecting its appearance or quality.
Nematodes
Several nematodes affect cabbage. Plants infested with nematodes are unthrifty and may
become stunted. Plants may also have signs of moisture or nutrient stress.

The disease is favoured by cool, wet conditions and it can survive for two to three years in
the soil. Above-ground parts of infected plants may be covered with a white cottony growth.

severe on acid soils or moderate pH soils that are poorly drained or have high clay content.
Infected plants are characterized by stunting, wilting and purpling of leaves. The roots
change into a mass of large, elongated or rounded swellings or clubs. The clubs rot and form
bad smelling wet masses.

Fusarium wilt is more prevalent in summer and the fungus persists indefinitely in the soil.
Initially the symptoms appear as yellow foliage, often mainly on one side of the plant. The
leaves become distorted and gradually turn brown and drop prematurely. The vascular area
also discolours.

The disease is introduced to fields in seed and its spread is very rapidly under hot, rainy,
windy conditions. The disease survives for three to five years in fields and in the stems of
host plants.
The symptoms first appear as yellow to light brown patches at the margins of leaves and lat-
er a network of black veins develops within these areas. Affected areas turn brown and dry
out and often leave a characteristic triangular- shaped lesion on the leaf margin, with one
point of the triangle directed towards the midrib. Older infected leaves also drop and the
vascular tissue turns brown as the bacteria move into the main veins and vascular system.

Downy mildew is common in cool, humid weather. The fungus survives in debris and is
spread by air-borne spores in large numbers. Infected leaves appear as if they have been
lightly sprinkled with pepper. The leaves become yellow around the pepper spots. Lesions
merge to cover large areas of leaves. Fine, fluffy white mould appears on the lesions on the
underside of the leaf during humid conditions.

Control
• Plants should not be irrigated after 15:00 pm and before 10:00 am.
• Ensure good seedbed preparation and practices to ensure aeration and drying.
Black leg is seed-borne and it can infect the whole seedbed when an infected seed germi-
nates. The whole plant wilts when infected. White to light brown lesions with a purple to
black margin develop on the stem and on leaves. The lesions have small black dots in the
centre. The centre of the lesion gets woody and cracks.

Bacterial leafspot is more severe in cool, moist weather. The symptoms initially appear as
small, faint, water-soaked areas on the underside of leaves. The affected areas develop into
brownish to purplish grey necrotic spots, fairly irregular after a few days. They may coa-
lesce to form large irregularly shaped spots. The leaf becomes wrinkled and the tissue may
tear when the lesions are many.

The disease is common during cool, rainy weather. Initially, symptoms appear as small,
dark areas and they rapidly enlarge to form large circular lesions that develop a bull’s-eye
pattern or target spot. The lesions are dark brown during wet periods. A brown, velvety,
spore-bearing growth can be noticed on the older lesions.

Harvesting maturity
The crop is harvested when the heads attain their full size and become firm and hard but
tender. The colour of the head is sometimes used as a maturity index. A fully developed
head has a lighter shade of green. The crop for pickling should be harvested when the cover
leaves curl back, and the white leaves beneath are exposed. If harvesting is delayed, the
heads may split and rots may occur while the heads harvested early may be soft.
Harvesting methods
The crop for the fresh market is harvested by hand with a knife or sickle. Cabbage for sto-
rage and/or processing is harvested at once mechanically. The heads should be cut off in
such a way that a few of the large, open wrapper leaves are left for protection around the
heads. Harvesting should be such that bruising of the heads is avoided as this makes them
unattractive. Most of the stem should be left on the head if the crop is to be stored.

Harvested produce should always be removed from direct sunlight and transported to the
packing shed as soon as possible. Cabbage and leafy greens are particularly susceptible to
wilting and other damage from high temperatures. When there is a delay of more than an
hour or two between harvest and packing, a water drench or spray arrangement can help
prevent dehydration and overheating.

Care must be taken that trucks are not overloaded on the bottom layers of produce are
crushed. Generally, the produce should be covered with a sheet to prevent frosting or desic-
cation, but on warmer days, when sweating and heating might occur, the sheet should be left
off.
