Subject – Request to permit the students of standard eight to take English literature as a subject
if they please.

Respected Sir,
I am Adhira from standard seven Swift, you may or may not know me but I am a new student
from Canada who had enrolled in standard six last year. I am writing to inquire about the
subject selection of standard eight and kindly ask you why an important subject like English
literature is not among them.

Though literature may not be as important of a subject in comparison to mathematics, the three
sciences or even English language it is still a very important subject that can help students
develop many different skills and abilities that can help them in the long run, some of these
skills and abilities include analyzing content, understanding different novels and breaking down
complex themes in storytelling, constructing better sentences, developing grammar skills, and
so on. Other than that, here is a list of the many more benefits and advantages of English
literature:

1. English Literature focuses on reading material, encouraging themes within stories or

poems and thematic analysis of content.
2. Literature advances your level of vocabulary; it gives students a lot more tools to
understand different contexts and situations where they can use these new found words.
3. A lot of novels touch upon the world’s greatest struggles and put them into a perspective
that can help students understand how much of a problem something can be. Race,
gender, ethnicity and wealth are often visited subject matters that help young students
empathize for those who belong to marginalized communities or/and are oppressed and
 reflect on society. Additionally, we learn to form our own opinions on these subjects
while having the tools to be able to talk about difficult topics, debate, and communicate
in other ways.
4. Literature can be used in a lot of other subjects that rely on opinion, essay writing and
having a depth of vocabulary at your disposal. English literature teaches students about
culture, history, and analysis of themes within texts which can be used when studying
history, religious studies, business studies, and geography among other subjects.

As I am in the debate club and had always dreamt about pursuing law in the future taking
literature next year would have been extremely beneficial for me and I was really looking
forward to it so you can imagine my surprise and disappointment when I had found out that it
would not an option for me. I would truly appreciate it sir if you would take time to reconsider
your decision and would let the students of standard 8 take English literature. Thank You.
