Even more dynamic and efficient: The new E-Class with 48-volt technology and ISG

EQ Boost – the whole family electrified

Stuttgart. Thanks to EQ Boost, the new models in the E-Class family offer even more driving dynamics with
significantly lower fuel consumption. Electrification will therefore be systematically expanded. The new OM 654 M
four-cylinder diesel engine is the world's first diesel engine to feature an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and a
48-volt vehicle electrical system. Also new is the first four-cylinder gasoline engine from Mercedes-Benz with 48
volts, ISG and electric auxiliary compressor (M 254), therefore with intelligent dual forced induction. The inline six-
cylinder petrol engine (M 256), available for the first time in the E-Class, also features an ISG. At the heart of the
new Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ models (combined fuel consumption: 9.1-8.6 l/100 km; combined CO 2

emissions: 209-198 g/km) is the electrified 3.0-litre petrol engine with EQ Boost and dual charging. The integrated
1

starter-generator provides additional thrust for a short time from the first revolution – the so-called EQ boost. In
the four-cylinder models, it offers 15 kW of power and 180 Newton metres (M 254) respectively 200 Newton
metres (OM 654 M) of torque, while in the six-cylinder models it is 16 kW and 250 Newton metres.

In line with the different customer needs, Mercedes-Benz is pursuing a three-pronged technology approach to
sustainable mobility: EQ Boost (electrified combustion engines), EQ Power (plug-in hybrid drive) and EQ (purely battery
electric drive). The new family of engines with four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines is modular in design and
consistently geared towards electrification – the so-called Family of Modular Engines (FAME). Its core features are a
uniform cylinder spacing of 90 millimetres and identical interfaces to the vehicle. The basic engines can be combined
both with ISG and hybrid drivetrains. By scaling the latest technologies and electrification options from 12-volt to 48-
volt and even high-voltage plug-in applications, a suitable drive can be dimensioned for every vehicle. This also allows
for flexible production.

The stated figures were determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring method. These are the NEDC CO figures according to

Every Mercedes with ISG is a mild hybrid

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker to use the integrated starter-generator in series production vehicles. The unit
combines the starter and generator in a powerful electric machine, which is located between the combustion engine and the
transmission. Combined with the 48-volt vehicle electrical system, the EQ Boost technology enables fuel savings and CO 2

reductions that previously could only be achieved with high-voltage hybrid technology. These include the typical “recuperate”,
“boost” and “sail” hybrid functions. Because the ISG can also shift the load points, the combustion engine also always operates
in a favourable map. Thus, every Mercedes with ISG becomes a mild hybrid. An additional advantage of the 48-volt vehicle
electrical system: it increases comfort. This is because the starter-generator brings the combustion engine very quickly and
evenly to idling speed, making the starting process even smoother. The restart from coasting operation is barely noticeable.

Second-generation ISG and further-developed 9G-TRONIC

The second generation of the integrated starter-generator is being launched in the E-Class models. The electric machine
is no longer part of the engine but instead the transmission. This makes it easier to combine the innovative technology
with different engines. Accordingly, the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been further developed and will initially
be used in the four-cylinder engines. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission cooler have moved to the
transmission. As a result, previously necessary cables have been dispensed with, resulting in installation space and
weight advantages. The efficiency of the transmission also increases. Example: the improved interaction with the
electric auxiliary oil pump reduces the delivery volume of the mechanical pump by 30%. Further contributions to
increased efficiency are made by the new generation of fully integrated transmission control with a multicore processor
and a new assembly and connection technology. Despite increased computing power, the number of electrical
interfaces has been drastically reduced and the weight of the transmission control unit reduced by 30%.

World’s first diesel engine with ISG: OM 654 M with up to 265 hp

The new OM 654 M four-cylinder diesel engine with second-generation ISG and 48-volt electrical system develops a
maximum output of up to 195 kW (265 hp) and a maximum torque of 550 Newton meters. An additional 15 kW and 180
200 Newton metres are available for acceleration. In the course of electrification, the proven OM 654 diesel engine was
fundamentally enhanced. Thanks to a new crankshaft, the cubic capacity increased from 1,950 cm³ to 1,993 cm³. The
injection pressure rose from 2,500 to 2,700 bar. The particularly fast response and even power delivery are ensured by
two water-cooled turbochargers, both of which now have variable turbine geometry.

The OM 654 M also features extended exhaust-gas aftertreatment. Its components include:

• an engine-mounted NO storage catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxides

• a DPF (diesel particulate filter with a special coating to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides, among other
particulates)
• an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction; with metered injection of AdBlue ) and an additional

SCR catalytic converter in the underbody of the vehicle, with a separately metered injection of AdBlue . ®

First four-cylinder petrol engine with ISG from Mercedes-Benz: M 254 with up to 272 hp

The newly developed four-cylinder M 254 gasoline engine also features the second-generation ISG. It delivers up to 200
kW (272 hp) and develops a maximum torque of 400 Newton metres. The EQ Boost delivers an additional 15 kW and
180 Newton metres for a short time. The M 254 combines, for the first time, all of the innovations of
Page 2
the modular engine family (FAME) in a single unit. These include the NANOSLIDE cylinder coating, CONICSHAPE
® ®

cylinder honing (trumpet honing) and the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system located directly on the engine. A further
innovation is the new double scroll turbocharger with variable scroll connection. The completely new developed
turbocharger for the M 254 is the result of a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Turbocharger Development and the
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. The double scroll turbocharger enables new standards in terms of power
delivery combined with high efficiency. This can be experienced through an even more spontaneous response of the
turbocharger. An electric booster compressor quickly builds up the boost pressure when required – especially at low
engine speeds – and thus contributes to a very dynamic response. The combination of precise control technology and
the efficient dual forced induction concept in the M 254 also allows the engine output to be increased by up to 30 kW
(41 hp) for up to 30 seconds. This overboost function enhances active driving safety, for example when overtaking and
when driving onto the motorway.

The range of electrified gasoline engines is rounded off by the inline six-cylinder M 256 with ISG, which is available for
the first time in the E-Class models. With up to 16 kW and 250 Newton metres of additional electrical power and
4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard, it enhances the sporty character of the Coupé and Cabriolet.

AMG-typical top performance: 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with EQ boost

Performance at a sports-car level is guaranteed by the electrified AMG 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with EQ boost
starter-generator and dual charging. In the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ models, the powerplant delivers 320 kW (435
hp) and provides a maximum torque of 520 Newton metres. The starter-generator briefly supplies an additional 16 kW of
power and 250 Newton metres of torque. Thanks to its support, the electric booster compressor builds up high boost
pressure when starting without deceleration, which causes the torque for acceleration to rise faster until the large
exhaust gas turbocharger kicks in. As a result, the AMG six-cylinder engine offers an extremely spontaneous and highly
dynamic response without turbo lag. The sporty characteristics are underlined by the EQ boost starter-generator and the
intelligent dual charging system using an exhaust gas turbocharger and electric booster compressor. All these features
together serve one purpose: to enhance the performance and driving dynamics typical of AMG while at the same time
reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
