3.1 Find in the WWW the information about the following
What does the word Taliban mean? What country obtains classified information
through Secret Intelligence Service? What are the responsibilities of the department
called MI6?
1) The word Taliban means 'students' or 'seekers' in Pashto, one of the two official
languages of Afghanistan.It was originally used to refer to a group of Islamic
students who emerged in Afghanistan in the 1990s and eventually seized control
of the country.
2) Classified information is material that a government body deems to be sensitive
information that must be protected. Access is restricted by law or regulation to
particular groups of people with the necessary security clearance and need to
know, and mishandling of the material can incur criminal penalties. The Secret
Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI6, is a British intelligence
agency responsible for gathering and analyzing information that relates to the
country's national security. It operates both inside and outside the UK, and is
primarily responsible for gathering foreign intelligence.
3) Founded in 1909, SIS (or MI6) exists to protect the UK's people, economy and
interests from overseas threats. The responsibilities of MI6 include collecting
and analyzing intelligence on foreign countries, assessing threats to the UK's
national security, and carrying out covert operations to protect British interests.
The agency is also responsible for developing relationships with foreign
intelligence agencies and providing advice to the UK government on matters of
national security.
