FluidSIM installation

Chapter 1
1. FluidSI M installation

1.1 Technical requirements

You need a computer running Windows 7, 8, 10 or Windows 11.

Depending on the purchased licensing type FluidSIM can be used

offline without internet connection or online with permanent inter-
net connection. For offline use FluidSIM uses the CodeMeter tech-
nology from Wibu-Systems for software licensing. For this purpose
the CodeMeter Runtime must be installed. If the Runtime is not
installed or outdated, a current Runtime version is installed by the
FluidSIM installer.

A permanent internet connection is required for online use. The

Internet is accessed via HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443).
Access must be allowed at least to the domain www.shopsys.de so
that the license servers can be reached. The CodeMeter technology
is not required and the CodeMeter runtime does not need to be
installed. For more information, see section Using offline licenses.

1.2 FluidSIM installation program

You have received a download link from Festo to an ISO image file
fluidsim6.iso. Download this file. ISO image files can be
temporarily mounted by Windows like a DVD drive with a drive
letter.

If you do not have a program (such as file packers or DVD writing

programs) associated with the iso file extension, double-clicking it
will mount the ISO file in your file system.

Picture 1/1:

If the ISO file is not mounted in your file system with a double-click,
then right-click on the file to call up the context menu and select
“Open with / Windows Explorer”.

Picture 1/2:

The ISO file is now temporarily mounted like a DVD drive. Double-
click setup.exe to launch the installer.

On the start page of the installer, you can select the language to be
used during the installation. With Install FluidSIM the installation
is started. The Install License Server selection is described in
section Installing the CodeMeter license server and the Activate
License... selection is described in section Using offline licenses.

1.2.3 CodeMeter driver

Picture 1/6: FluidSIM setup: Installing the CodeMeter Runtime

If you do not want to use FluidSIM exclusively online with a perma-

nent internet connection, you need the CodeMeter Runtime from
Wibu-Systems for licensing. If no suitable version is found on your
system by the installation program, then the installation of the
Runtime is performed in the next steps.

You require administrator rights to install the CodeMeter Runtime.

If you would like to install FluidSIM under a user with limited rights,
exit the installation program after the CodeMeter Runtime has been
installed and start it again.

1.3 Command line parameters and MSI installation

The installation program can be started with command line parame-

ters for an unattended installation (silent installation). With the
parameters you can also control, among other things, whether the
didactic videos should be installed. An MSI installation is per-
formed in the background. The associated MSI files are located in
subfolders of the installation media.

We recommend using the installer with command line parameters

for software distribution and not the MSI files directly. In case of
direct MSI installation, there are some points to be considered and
the installation should be performed only by an expert.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 17

1.3.1 Command line parameters

The following parameters are available for installation. If a parame-

ter is not available for an MSI installation, it will be noted in the
description.

Administrator rights are required for both the CodeMeter Runtime

installation and an installation for all users.

/quiet Performs an unattended (silent) installation. No dialogs or installa-

tion progress will be displayed. Alternatively, the /q and /qn pa-
rameters can be used. If a progress bar is to be displayed, select
/quiet instead of /qb.

INSTALLDIR="path" Installs FluidSIM into the path directory.

NOVIDEOS_HYD=1 By default, the hydraulics didactics videos are installed. The videos
will not be installed if this parameter is set.

NOVIDEOS_PNEU=1 By default, the pneumatics didactic videos are installed. The videos
will not be installed if this parameter is set.

NOPRESENTATIONS=1 By default, the advanced hydraulics presentations are installed.

The presentations will not be installed if this parameter is set.

NOCODEMETER=1 By default, the CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu is installed if there is

no suitable runtime on your system. The CodeMeter Runtime is not
required for the exclusive use of online licenses. If this parameter is
set, then the Runtime will not be installed.
This parameter is not available for MSI installation.

AUTOUPDATES=[n] In the options of FluidSIM you can set whether updates are
searched for at program start. By default, FluidSIM informs about
new updates. With the command line parameter AUTOUPDATES
the default setting is set to the option specified here every time the
program is started. Valid values for [n] are 0, 1, 2 or 3 with the
following meaning:
0 = Disable automatic updates
1 = Notify about updates
2 = Notify about updates and download automatically

18 © Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH

3 = The option selected by the user in FluidSIM is valid and will not
be overwritten.

During an update installation, the AUTOUPDATES command line

parameter does not have to be specified again. The previously
existing option is retained.

If, on the other hand, it is omitted during a new installation, the

parameter is reset. This corresponds to the value 3.

PROXY="address:port" Online licenses require a permanent internet connection. The

command line parameter PROXY can be used to specify a proxy to
be used by FluidSIM. The parameter consists of the IP address and
a port, which are separated by a double dot, e.g.
“192.168.1.135:3128”.

TMPDIR="Pfad" Temporary installation files are stored by default in the directory

provided by Windows. With the command line parameter TMPDIR
the directory path is used.
This parameter is not available for MSI installation.

ALLUSERS="" By default, the installation is performed for all users. If this parame-
ter is not used, the installation will be performed only for the
logged-in user.

LANGUAGE="lang" By default FluidSIM is installed in the system language set and this
parameter does not need to be used. This parameter installs Flu-
idSIM in the specified language lang. Available languages are DE
for German, ENUS for English, ES for Spanish and FR for French.
This parameter is not available for MSI installation.

LICSERVER= If you use offline licenses via a CodeMeter license server from
"Server1;..;ServerN" Wibu, Server can be used to specify the CodeMeter license servers
in the local network as IP address or as server name. It is usually
only necessary to specify the license servers if the license servers
are located in a subnet.

remove_first=1 Uninstalls FluidSIM in the first step before performing the actual
installation. This may be necessary in rare cases when the existing
installation is corrupted.
This parameter is not available for MSI installation.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 19

/uninstall Uninstalls FluidSIM. Alternatively, the parameter /x can be used.

Example
setup.exe /qb INSTALLDIR="C:\FluidSIM6" NOVIDEOS_HYD=1
NOCODEMETER=1

1.3.2 MSI installation

The CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu cannot be installed with the

provided MSI files. The CodeMeter Runtime must be installed
separately. For more information, please contact Wibu directly
(www.wibu.com).

Except as noted, the parameters listed above can also be used with
an MSI installation. The MSI files are located in the Support\Msi
folder on the installation media.

The following parameters can only be used with an MSI installation.

/i fluidsim6.msi The MSI file fluidsim6.msi is installed.

REINSTALL=ALL These two parameters must be specified if FluidSIM is already

REINSTALLMODE=vamus installed on the system.

TRANSFORMS="lang" If this parameter is not specified, FluidSIM will be installed in Eng-

lish. This parameter installs FluidSIM in the specified language
lang. Available languages are :de-de.mst for German, :es-es.mst
for Spanish and :fr-fr.mst for French.

Installing the CodeMeter license server

Chapter 2
2. Installing the Code Meter license server

You can use any PC in your network as the license server. The
following conditions must be met for this:

— On the server PC, the CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu-Systems

must have been installed with the Server Access option select-
ed.

— The client PCs must have access to the server PC via the LAN.

— Valid licenses must have been activated on the server PC or a

CodeMeter USB stick with valid licenses must be inserted.

Picture 2/1: FluidSIM setup: start page

If you have started the FluidSIM installation program on a PC that

you want to use as the server, then you can select the Install Li-
cense Server to install the CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu Sys-
tems. The “Server Access” option is automatically activated in the
Runtime. If there already is a suitable version of the CodeMeter

Runtime on the PC, the Runtime will not be installed and only the
“Server Access” option will be activated. The “Server Access”
option can also be activated and deactivated using the tools from
Wibu Systems. For details, see Troubleshooting chapter.

If the installed CodeMeter runtime is newer than the version in-

cluded in the FluidSIM installer, then unfortunately the installer
cannot set up the license server automatically.

In this case you have to download the latest Wibu CodeMeter

Runtime and install it with the 'Network Server' option. The install-
er will ask you to open the default browser with the Wibu download
page.

The activation of licenses is described in the Using offline licenses

chapter.

Picture 2/2: FluidSIM setup: installing the license server

After the license server is installed, you have the option to activate
existing licenses via a ticket number. Details are described in chap-
ter Using offline licenses.

Using offline licenses

Chapter 3
3. Using offli ne licenses

FluidSIM licenses are mainly distributed and managed via a ticket

system. In this case, you will have received a ticket from your
licensor that you can use to import (activate) and manage your
licenses via the Internet. The ticket number consists of 5 alphanu-
merical strings of 5 characters each that are separated by a minus
sign, e.g. “8A7T4-6P7GW-5YQLN-4WDWL-KR3M7”.

The licenses associated with the ticket number can be used both
offline and online. For offline use, the licenses must be transferred
(activated) via the Internet to a local computer or a license server
(use as floating licenses) in the local network. After the licenses
have been transferred, an Internet connection is no longer required.
The use of online licenses is described in document “License Man-
ager”.

The offline licenses can be managed using the “License Activation

Wizard”. There are several ways to start the wizard.

— From the installer using the Activate License... button.

— From the Windows Start menu under “Festo Didactic” / “Li-

cense Activation Wizard”.

— Directly from FluidSIM via the menu item Manage / Manage

Licenses... .

— From the License Manager via the button Start Activation

Wizard .

The following conditions must be met to be able to use the activa-

tion wizard.

— The activation wizard must be able to establish an Internet

connection. If the PC is behind a proxy, a dialog is opened in
which you can enter the required proxy data.

— The CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu Systems must be installed

on the PC used to open the activation wizard. If that is not the

24 © Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH

case, you can use the wizard to open the corresponding down-
load page of Wibu Systems in the standard browser.

— The CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu Systems must be installed

on the PC to which the licenses are to be imported.

— The activation wizard must be able to access the PC to which

the licenses are to be imported via LAN.

3.1 License Activation Wizard

Picture 3/1: License Activation Wizard

→ Enter your ticket number on the start page of the activation

wizard.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 25

You can also copy the complete ticket number in the first input field
via the clipboard. The ticket number is then automatically distribut-
ed to the five input fields.

If the activation wizard has no access to the PC to which the licens-

es are to be imported, various files need to be exchanged between
this PC and the licensor. Only select the Transfer files manually
button in this case. An Internet site opens that guides you through
the file exchange process.

→ Select Next to access the license information for your ticket

via the Internet.

3.1.1 Activating licenses

Picture 3/2: Activation wizard: Select license

The table lists all licenses for your ticket number. Free licenses that
can be activated are displayed on a green background. If no free
licenses are available, you will be informed. Every line contains a
number of licenses of a product that can be activated or deactivat-
ed together.

Name Contains the name of the licensed product.

Number of licenses Specifies the maximum number of licenses that can be activated or
deactivated.

CmContainer

licenses were activated. The container can be a hardware stick
(CmDongle) or a software-based license (CmAct).

License server Contains the name of the server with the corresponding CodeMeter
container. If the CodeMeter container cannot be found in the LAN,
this field is empty and the license cannot be deactivated.

→ Select “Activate” if you want to import (activate) licenses or

“Deactivate/Re-host” if you want to deactivate or relocate li-
censes.

After selecting “Activate”, you can select the number of licenses

you want to activate. This dialog is skipped if only one license is
available.

3.1.3 Relocating single licenses (license borrowing)

The activation wizard supports the simple conversion of a single

license into a software license. That is a practical function e.g. if
you have multiple licenses on a server and want to use an individu-
al license for a foreseeable time locally on a laptop (license borrow-
ing). You can also carry out the necessary steps manually using the
activation wizard. The necessary steps for license borrowing are
automated, however. The steps are deactivation of a license and

subsequent activation of a single software license on the local
computer.

→ Select “Deactivate/Re-host” from the license overview.

license information displayed for your ticket via Back to license
overview .

If you want to give back your license, you must deactivate it.

3.2 Troubleshooting

To start FluidSIM with an offline license, it must find a valid and

available CodeMeter license. The CodeMeter Runtime from Wibu
Systems is used to install various tools that you can use to query
license information and make settings.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 41

License server refers to the computer that can directly access the
CodeMeter container (CmContainer) with licenses. A container can
be a connected hardware stick (CmDongle) or an imported soft-
ware-based CodeMeter-Act license (CmAct).

Client computer refers to the computer on which FluidSIM is started

and on which it requests a license from the license server. If the
CodeMeter containers are on the local computer, then license
server and client computer are identical. Various requirements
must be complied with for successful access to the license. How
you can check these requirements using the tools of Wibu Systems
is described afterwards.

1. A current CodeMeter Runtime must be installed on the license

server and on the client computer.

2. The license server must have direct access to the CodeMeter

container with the corresponding licenses.

3. If the license server is not also the local computer, then the
“Server Access” option must be selected on the license server.

4. The client computer must be able to access the license server

via the network and its license information. If the license server
is in a different subnet, then the IP address of the license serv-
er must be specified on the client computer (Server Search
List).

3.2.1 CodeMeter Control Center

The CodeMeter Control Center is installed, along with the Code-

Meter Runtime. The connected CodeMeter containers of the com-
puter are displayed via the CodeMeter Control Center. No Code-
Meter containers are listed that are on other license servers in the
network. The CodeMeter Control Center can be started via the start
menu under “CodeMeter”-“CodeMeter Control Center” or by click-
ing the corresponding symbol on the task bar.

42 © Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH

Picture 3/16: CodeMeter Control Center symbol on the task bar

Next to the list of connected CodeMeter containers, you can use the
“WebAdmin” button to have detailed license information displayed
in the Internet browser and you can make various settings. The
WebAdmin is described in the next section.

On the license server, you can use the CodeMeter Control Center to
check if your CodeMeter containers really are available or connect-
ed. More information on the CodeMeter Control Center can be
found in the Help for the program.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 43

Picture 3/17: CodeMeter Control Center

3.2.2 WebAdmin

The CodeMeter Runtime is also used to install the WebAdmin that

you can use to access detailed license information and make
runtime settings. The WebAdmin can be opened via the CodeMeter
Control Center, which was described in the previous chapter. All
WebAdmin functions are described in this Help. Only the main
functions important for starting FluidSIM are explained below. The
WebAdmin always shows a view of the licenses and settings of a
selected license server. You can therefore also have information of
a different license server in the network displayed.

44 © Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH

Picture 3/18: WebAdmin: selecting the server

First, check if the new licenses are available on the license server.
Start the WebAdmin directly on the license server and check on the
“Containers” tab if your CodeMeter container is available with the
corresponding licenses.

Picture 3/19: WebAdmin, tab: Containers

If the license server is not the local computer and if the licenses are
to be available to other client computers, then the “Server Access”
option must be selected. You can configure this on the “Configura-

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 45

tion”-“Server”-“Server Access” tab. Select “Enable” in the “Net-
work Server” group.

Picture 3/20: WebAdmin, tab: Server Access

Next, check if the licenses of the license server can be accessed by

the client computer. Start the WebAdmin directly on the client
server for this purpose. Then, you must select the license server in
the WebAdmin at the bottom left.

46 © Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH

Picture 3/21: WebAdmin: servers found

If your license server is not listed, there may be one of two reasons
for this.

1. On the license server, the “Server Access” option is not acti-

vated (see previous section).

2. The license server is in a different subnet and this server is not

entered in the server search list.

You can enter the license server on the tab: “Configuration”-

“Basic”-“Server Search List”.

© Festo Didactic SE • Art Systems GmbH 47

Picture 3/22: WebAdmin, tab: Server Search List

You should now be able to select the license server at the bottom
left in the WebAdmin and you can then check on the “Container”
tab if your CodeMeter container is available with the corresponding
licenses on the license server.

Managing online licenses

Chapter 5
5. Managing onl ine lice nses

The licenses associated with the ticket number can be used both
offline and online. All licenses that have not been transferred (acti-
vated) to a local computer or a license server in the local network
are automatically available for online use.

When working with FluidSIM with online licenses, a permanent

internet connection is required.

Example
You have purchased 10 licenses of FluidSIM Pneumatics full version
and received the associated ticket number “8A7T4-6P7GW-5YQLN-
4WDWL-KR3M7” from Festo. With this ticket number you have
transferred 7 licenses to a local network server as described in
section Using offline licenses.

Because you have imported 7 of your 10 licenses, the remaining 3

licenses can be used as online licenses. To do this, you need to
create user groups and passwords using the License Manager. The
user group name and password will serve as credentials for a
student, for example, which you must provide to the student.
Online license managing is described in detail in the “License
Manager” document.

The license manager does not have to run for using the online
licenses. The license manager is only required if you want to create
or change user groups, for example. During the administration you
need an internet connection.
