Illegal logging and Air pollution. Because of the
construction of Don Fernando’s furniture factory,
a lot of trees in barangay Maligaya had to be cut
down in order to be used as the main material in
making the furniture.
 PLOT OF THE STORY
(DETAILED STORY SEQUENCE)
One fine day a group of men came to barangay maligaya. They brought big trucks, axes and construction tools with them. A
few minutes later they were separated into groups, other men were tasked to start cutting down all the trees and the others
were instructed to start the construction of the factory. Bestfriends John and Michael saw what was happening so they
rushed to lolo Edward’s house. Lolo Edward was the leader of barangay maligaya. John and Michael told Lolo Edward
everything that was happening. Lolo Edward went to the construction site and talked to one of the men working and asked
him why they were cutting the trees. The man said he was just instructed to cut all the trees for the upcoming construction
of Don Fernando’s furniture factory. Don Fernando was one the richest men in the Philippines. He asked the man if he could
talk to Don Fernando. The man brought him to Don Fernando’s house. Lolo Edward talked to Don Fernando but he refused to
listen and continued cutting the trees. The construction of the factory was finished. Don Fernando’s furniture was shipped
and sold in different countries. His sales went up every single day. But the air also became polluted because of the factory.
The people that lived in barangay maligaya and some of the workers in the factory got sick because of the polluted air. One
day there was a strong storm, all the houses were flooded including his shop and house. Without trees, rain runs off soil and
into rivers and streams, raising the water level. Trees help keep soil in place, and their roots soak up water. His sales
dropped. Don Fernando realized what he did was wrong. He went to Lolo Edward’s house and apologized for his mistakes. He
told Lolo Edward his new plans for the whole barangay. Lolo Edward agreed with Don Fernando. Don Fernando continued the
making of furniture. He started the renovations of every house and gave everyone who lived in barangay maligaya free
furniture. Don Fernando promised everyone in barangay maligaya that everytime he cuts down trees he will always plant
twice the tree that he will cut down. He also started the construction of a company called “Think green live green” where
everyone who wants to volunteer to plant trees can join so that they can help him bring back all the trees in barangay
maligaya to avoid floods and landslides.
 MORAL LESSON OF THE STORY:
The moral lesson of the story is to always take care of our environment. Because
the environment is our gift from God, and we are the caretaker of the
environment. Therefore, it is our responsibility to look after the environment and
maintain God's gift to us. Stop deforestation and learn to plant trees because
trees help keep soil in place, and their roots soak up water. Trees reduce landslide
risk by lowering soil moisture levels interception, evaporation and transpiration
are the primary mechanisms. Forests and trees make an essential contribution to
food security by helping to maintain the environmental conditions needed for
agricultural production. They stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, enhance the
land's capacity to store water, and moderate air and soil temperatures.
