What is pollution?

Pollution is the introduction

of contaminants into the natural
environment that cause adverse change.
Pollution can take the form of any
substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy
(such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or
light). Pollutants, the components of
pollution, can be either foreign
substances/energies or naturally occurring
contaminants.
Types of pollution
The major forms of pollution are listed below along with the
particular contaminants relevant to each of them:
• Air pollution: the release of chemicals and particulates into the atmosphere. Common
gaseous pollutants include carbon
monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides produced
by industry and motor vehicles.
• Electromagnetic pollution: the overabundance of electromagnetic radiation in
their non-ionizing form, such as radio and television transmissions, Wi-fi etc. Although
there is no demonstrable effect on humans there can be interference with
radio-astronomy and effects on safety systems of aircraft and cars.
• Light pollution: includes light
trespass, over-illumination and astronomical interference.
• Littering: the criminal throwing of inappropriate man-made objects, unremoved, onto
public and private properties.
• Noise pollution: which encompasses roadway noise, aircraft noise, industrial noise as
well as high-intensity sonar.
List of skills and abilities to stop
pollution
• Drive your car less.
• Keep your car in good repair.
• Turn off your engine.
• Don't burn your garbage.
• Limit backyards fire in the city.
• Plant and care for trees.
• Switch to electric or hand-powered lawn equipment.
• Use less energy.
• Properly dispose of hazardous household items.
• Reduce or eliminate use of fertilizers and chemical herbicides and
pesticides.
• Make an appointment to service your septic system.
• Landscape with native plants.
• Eliminate bare spots in your yard.
• Make a rain garden.
Problem-solving Journey
Q: What inspired you?
A: My inspiration to combat pollution stems from a combination of factors. Firstly,
witnessing the devastating impact of pollution on our environment, from polluted
rivers to smog-filled skies, has fueled my determination to make a positive change.
Secondly, I believe in the power of collective action and recognize that each
individual's efforts count toward a cleaner Earth.

Q: What actions did you take?

A: We participated at "Planeta Voluntarilor" meeting and helped to sanitize the forests
and parks of Ciocana. I've taken part in local clean-up efforts, tree-planting initiatives,
and community projects to mitigate air pollution. These actions directly enhance air
quality at the grassroots level.

Q: What was the outcome?

A: The outcome from this volunteering action was a pleasure because we made
changes like: Environmental Improvement, Health Benefits, Preservation of
Ecosystems, Community Engagement, Skill Development, Personal Fullfilment etc.
