FUNCTIONS OF CCI

The preamble of the Competition Act focuses on the development of the economy and the
country by avoiding unfair competition practices and promoting constructive competition. The
functions of the CCI are:
• Ensuring that the benefit and welfare of the customers are maintained in the Indian Market.
• An accelerated and inclusive economic growth through ensuring fair and healthy
competition in the economic activities of the nation.
• Ensuring the efficient utilization of the nation’s resources through the execution of
competition policies.8
• The CCI will also scrutinize any foreign company that enters the Indian market through a
merger or acquisition to ensure that it abides by India’s competition laws – the Competition
Act, 2002.
• CCI also ensures interaction and cooperation with the other regulating authorities in the
economy. This will ensure that the sectoral regulatory laws are agreeable with the
competition laws.
• It also acts as a business facilitator, by ensuring that a few firms do not establish dominance
in the market and that there is a peaceful co-existence between the small and the large
enterprises.
• To eliminate practices having adverse effect on competition,promote and sustain
competition, protect the interests of consumers and ensure freedom of trade in the markets
of India.
• To give opinion on competition issues on a reference received from a statutory authority
established under any law and to undertake competition advocacy, create public awareness
and impart training on competition issues.
• The Competition Commission is India’s competition regulator, and anantitrust
watchdog for smaller organizations that are unable to defend themselves against large
corporations.
• CCI has the authority to notify organizations that sell to India if it feels they may be
negatively influencing competition in India’s domestic market.

• The Competition Act guarantees that no enterprise abuses their 'dominant position' in a
market through the control of supply, manipulating purchase prices, or adopting practices that
deny market access to other competing firms.9
The Competition Commission of India makes the following efforts to fulfil its goals:
• Make the markets function in a way that benefits and protects consumers.
• To promote faster and more equitable economic growth and development, and ensure fair
and healthy competition in all economic activities across the nation.
• In order to ensure the most effective use of economic resources, implement competition
policies.
• To guarantee that sectoral regulatory regulations are smoothly aligned with competition
law, establish and maintain effective relationships and contacts with sectoral regulators.
• To build and promote a culture of competition in the Indian economy, effectively carry out
competition advocacy, and enlighten all stakeholders about the advantages of
competition.10
