Inspect the Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness Kit Parts

Wiring Harness Components
• Hitch Module Assembly w/ double sided tape
securing piece located at the bottom of the module.
• Hitch wiring Harness with 11 white tape mark
locations and a white grounding wire (with 4 black
tape marks).
• (1) 10mm grounding bolt.
• (7) pin adapter connected and white taped sections
where the wire ties are located.
• Wire ties (9 small 2 big) with (9) wire tie mounts.
• (4) ¼” bolts with 3/8” nuts and (8) washers.
• (2) 7mm head machine screws with nuts and (4) flat
washers.
Wiring Harness Parts Inspections
• Ensure no damages to the module or wiring harness
pieces.
• Ensure all the hardware is included with the wiring
harness kit and no damages to bolt or nut threads,
etc.

Open the hood and use the prop rod to hold


the hood in the open position. While holding
the battery sensor in place with one hand, use a
¼” drive ratchet and 10mm socket to remove
the negative battery cable from the negative
battery stud. Do not remove negative cable
from the battery post. Position / protect the
negative cable so it cannot accidentally touch
body ground or the negative the battery
terminal. Allow (60) seconds before the next
installation step to ensure the airbag power
supply is discharged.

1) By hand carefully disconnect the (7)
blue clips that secure the third row
seat close out trim in place. Ensure
the clips remain in the (2) rear seat
close out sections for reassembly.
2) Remove the Tonneau/ Cargo cover
(when applicable) and set aside in
safe location.
3) ****NOTE: Some models are
equipped with a Tonneau/ Cargo
cover in the cargo tray. Remove and
set aside.

Rear Cargo Area Preparation
1. Remove the tail gate lower trim panel
by carefully pulling straight up by hand
and unseating the (4) retaining clips.
Start with the outer clip on one side
and work towards the opposite side to
remove the panel.
2. Place the panel aside for re-
installation later.
3. Note: use a clip removal tool to
remove any clips that might stay in the
vehicle body and replace the clip to
the appropriate panel location.

Note: the outer clips are “green”


colored and the inner clips are
“white” colored.

Remove the LH Rear Cargo Hook
1. Remove the O.E. LH rear cargo
hooks by placing the hook in the
down position.
2. Using a plastic trim tool, carefully
dislodge the plastic bolt cover.
3. Using a ¼” Dr. Ratchet and 10mm
socket remove the cargo hook
retaining bolt and remove the
cargo hook assembly.
4. Retain the LH cargo hook for
reassembly later.

LH Side Rear Cargo Panel Preparation


1. Carefully move the weather-stripping
to allow access to the cargo area trim
panel.
2. Using an un-modified plastic trim tool,
carefully dislodge the (3) clips that hold
the rear section of the panel in place.

Remove Inner Tail Light Inner Covers
1) Remove the LH and RH inner tail light
access covers by starting with the RH
inner tail light cover.

3) By hand pull up to release the lower
panel tab (hook).
4) Repeat on the LH side.

Remove Rear Bumper Skin
1) Using a ¼” dr. ratchet with a 6’
extension and a 10mm socket
remove, the (2) 10mm rear
bumper skin retaining self
tapping bolts on the RH and LH
sides.
2) Place the (2) 10mm self tapping
bolts aside to be reinstalled.
3) Locate the inner bumper skin
upper retaining clip on the LH
side.
4) Using a flat blade screwdriver, LH Side Shown
press the center stalk of the clip
inward to release the clip.
Repeat on the RH side.

outward to prepare the clips for

Disconnect RAB & SMART Antenna
from Rear Bumper Beam (If Equipped)
1) Unseat the clips in the center area rear gate
opening area. Be careful not to pull the rear
bumper skin away from the vehicle too far
potentially damaging the (RAB) system.
2) Carefully disconnect the (RAB) harness from
the rear bumper skin.
3) Place the rear bumper skin on a stand or a
surface protected bench.
4) Disconnect the SMART Antenna connector.
5) Remove the (RAB) connector that remains on
the bumper beam by pushing on the tab
located at the bottom of connector.
6) Slide connection off of tab, leaving the clip in
place on bumper beam.
7) Allow the (RAB) and SMART Antenna vehicle
harness’ to hang freely away from the rear
bumper beam area.

Disconnect RAB & SMART Antenna


from Rear Bumper Beam (If Equipped)
1) Place the bumper beam with the openings
facing up to access the clips on the bumper
beam.
2) Using a nylon trim tool, carefully push on tabs
on (RAB) clip on each side and pull on the top
of clip on top side to unseat.
3) Using a nylon trim tool, carefully push on tabs
on SMART antenna clip on each side and pull
on the top of antenna on top side to unseat.

location for reuse.

Hand install the

bolts and nut at
these locations
1. Hand start (6) saved 17mm head bolts on and repeat on
the opposite

2. Using a 3/8” dr. ratchet, 6” extension and Tightening Torque of re-used (1) 17mm Nut and (3) 17mm Bolt

and (3) bolts on each side.
3. Using a Torque wrench, torque all (6) bolts
and (2) nuts to 52 ft. lbs.
4. Apply torque marks on the bolts and studs
when completed.
5. Apply 100% Clear Silicone or SEM “Rust Right Side Shown
Shield” paint (semproducts.com) to the
(3) bolt places and (1) stud place on each
side.
Apply 100% Silicone or SEM “Rust Shield” paint
(semproducts.com) on both the RH and LH sides.

Install the Trailer Hitch LH & RH Frame LH Side Shown


Brackets
1) Insert the LH side frame bracket into the frame
rail and align the (3) weld nut locations.
2) Locate (3) 19mm head bolts and (3) flat
washers provided in the kit. Place (1) flat
washer on the (3) 19mm bolts.
3) Holding the LH side frame bracket in place,
carefully hand start each of the (3) 19mm
bolts.
4) Loosely tighten the (3) bolts and nut
combinations using a 3/8” dr. ratchet, or a 3/8”
dr. “Palm Style” ratchet, 6” extension and

Ensure the temperature is within 60º to 110º Fahrenheit which is a standard
Trailer Hitch Bar Wire Tie Mount Pad requirement for all parts using 3M® double sided tape to affix the part to the vehicle.
Installation Procedure.
1) Locate the hitch bar and turn the bar over so
the bottom is facing up.
2) Using alcohol and a clean towel, clean the (4)
areas where the wire tie mount pads are to be
installed.
3) Peel the adhesive backing cover off the wire tie
mount pad and hold from the front. Do not
touch the adhesive side.
4) Affix the wire tie mounting pads in place and
hold in place for a minimum of (5) seconds. 1 2 3 4

Install the Trailer Hitch Bar to the Frame
Brackets
1) Carefully rest the hitch bar tabs on the top of the
LH and RH side brackets.
2) Locate (2) 19mm head and (2) flat washers
provided in the kit. Place (1) flat washer on each
of the (2) 19mm bolts.
3) By hand loosely install the bolt and washer
assembly on the LH and RH sides of the hitch bar
as shown. Do not tighten at this time.
4) Ensure the trailer hitch harness is not pinched on
the LH side.
5) Locate the 7-pin connector socket on the harness
and plug the socket connector into the pre-
assembled 7-pin connector housing. Perform a
push-pull test on the connector to ensure a
complete connection.
Loosely install the (2) 19mm head bolt and

Reinstall the Rear Bumper Skin


1) Using a ¼” dr. ratchet with a 6’
extension and a 10mm socket
reinstall the (2) 10mm rear
bumper skin retaining self
tapping bolts on the RH and LH
sides.
2) Locate the inner bumper skin
upper retaining clips and
reinstall them on the LH and RH

2019MY Ascent (TR8) Trailer Hitch Installation Concern. Cause the “white” clips with sealing washers that retain the tail light
#1) Water Leak Found Under Tool Tray Area, Cause tail light cover panels on the LH & RH sides of the vehicle do not adequately seal
access panel clips not fully sealed allowing water entry. the clip gasket to the body hole.

Countermeasure Replace the “white” clips with sealing washers on both tail light cover panels.

Reinstall the Tail Light Inner RH Side Shown
Covers
1) Locate previously saved LH and RH
inner tail light access covers.
2) Ensure the (2) new cover clips and
fiber washers are in place on both
LH and RH sides.
3) Reinstall the LH and RH inner tail
light access covers by aligning the
lower panel tab (hook) and seating
the middle clip then the upper in
place.
4) Ensure the (2) inner tail light
panels are securely in place.
5) Gently tug on the LH and RH side
panels to ensure the clips are
properly seated in place.

Raise Spare Tire


1. Using a 19mm deep well
socket and ratchet, raise
the spare tire until it is
secured into place.

Rear Cargo Area Reassembly
1) Carefully reinstall the rear
compartment tray by aligning the
tabs on the rear edge trim and
sides into place. Once aligned,
seat the (5) clips that hold the
rear compartment tray in place, .
2) Ensure the plastic tray is securely
in place.
3) Place tonneau cover back into
place (when applicable).
Carefully align the clips that hold
the rear compartment tray in place
and reinstall the plastic tray.

Re-connect the negative cable by reinstalling


the saved 10mm nut on the stud. Use a ¼” drive
torque wrench and a 10mm socket, tighten the
cable nut to 66 In. Lbs. while holding the sensor
to prevent damage and prevent the assembly
from rotating on the battery post.
.
Carefully reinstall the negative battery cable
to the battery stud only. Do not allow the
negative cable accidentally ground during the
installation.

While connecting the negative battery cable to the stud, hold the battery
sensor in place with one hand while torqueing the 10mm hex nut that Torque mark the
secures the cable to the sensor. This will help support the sensor to
prevent damage and also prevent the assembly from rotating on the battery stud
battery post causing a poor connection.

Initialization of Power Windows
If the power window automatic function does not
operate properly, operate each window according
to the following procedure in order to initialize the
power window system.
1. Close the door.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
3. Open the window completely and then press
and hold down the power window switch for
approximately (1) second.
4. Close the window completely and then pull and
hold the power window switch for
approximately (1) second.
5. Confirm the power window automatic functions
operate properly.

Check Your Work Validation
- Ensure no gaps in the rear bumper skin between the rear quarters, under the tail lights, under the rear gate area.
- Ensure the tail light bolt covers (2) per side are in place.
- Ensure the rear bumper skin is properly reinstalled with all (6) large clips and (2) rear quarter clips are securely in place.
- Ensure the rear bumper skin trailer hitch access panel is installed correctly with the (2) quick access clips locked in place.
- Ensure the Customer Caution Document is located in the glove box.
- Ensure the brake controller pigtail connector in the clear bag is located in the glove box.
- All torque marks are present.
- Rear Gate opens and closes properly. Note: if the Smart Antenna is not properly reconnected the gate will not open using the Smart
Key Transponders.
- Rear cargo area cover is properly re-installed along with the right side cover.
- Ensure the close-out material and (7) clips behind the 3rd row seats is properly snapped back in place.
- Spare Tire is tightly in place in the storage position under the rear of the vehicle.
- All Spare tire tools and covers are in place and did not become loose.
- Ensure the battery negative terminal stud is tight and torque marked.
- See the additional work validation checks on the next slides.
- Ensure power windows function properly.

- With Ignition ”ON” and Engine “OFF”
perform the following checks:
- Connect a 4-pin class 1 tester to Class 3 Class 3 Trailer
7-pin tester. Insert 7-pin connector into Hitch Tester
housing on trailer hitch bar.
- Open the hitch connector cover and
install a (4) pin class 1 trailer hitch
wiring harness light tester in the
harness connector at the hitch receiver.
- Observe the lights on the light tester to
verify the following harness
connections;
- Tail lights
- Brake lights
- Left Turn Signal
- Right Turn Signal
