JHS 1 year “Can you ------?” pg. 80-83

First Activity: Evolution Janken

1) Everyone starts at the first question (Can you play tennis?)
(ア)Both partners ask their question, answer, then janken
2) If you win, you level up to the next question (Can you speak Korean?)
3) The winner is the first to get to the Finish.

I usually do a couple of examples with the HRT, then practice all the
questions together before starting. I then give stickers to the 5
fastest people
(for classes with no stickers, I write 5 lines on the board. Fastest 5
write their names on the lines)

Second Activity: Interview and Writing

1) First have the students choose two more “Can you ----?” questions and
write them on the sheet.
2) Interview with the person next to them, writing a O for yes I can, or an
X for no I can’t.
3) Have every other column move up one seat so they have new partners.

Some students are not creative and may need some help coming up with
the questions.
4) Repeat 4 times.
5) Students use the results of the interview to write about their friends.

I usually have them put their hands up when they are done. The JTE
and I go round and mark the answers, so I dont have to do it in my free
periods!

Third Activity: I Can Bet

1) Split the class into groups, giving each white boards, markers, and
erasers (I usually do groups of 6, because too many groups get a bit too
much to keep track of.)
2) Each team starts with 100 points. The JTE and I take turns saying "I
can ----" sentences. Some are true, some are false.
3) The students guess O true or X false, and bet some of their points.
Reveal the answer. Kids go nuts. Rinse, repeat.
4) If a team gets to 0, I usually give them a bonus 10 points to get them
going again after a long lecture on responsible betting practices
