Read the following passage, then answer the questions: 10
As I put my key into the keyhole, the door slid open, to my amazement,
I saw that the kitchen light was on. I had left my house at about ten that
morning and I could not explain why I might have left it on. It immediately
dawned on me that someone had broken into the house and the first
thing I thought of doing was to call on my neighbour Mr. Hassan.
As soon as we got into the hall, we found that everything was in a
terrible mess. The armchairs were all overturned, two small tables lay
turned over on the floor and the radio had been smashed. There could be
no doubt that the burglar had left nothing untouched. Before going on to
inspect the rest of the house, I called the police.
Then we went into my bedroom. All my clothes were thrown all over
the bed and the floor. The bed cover had been removed and the mattress
had been emptied of its feathers. The police officers arrived a few minutes
later and made a thorough search and declared that the burglar must
have been quite experienced for he had even ransacked the kitchen
cupboards. I told the officers it would take me at least two day’s hard
work to sort out all those things and find out whether anything had been
stolen. Fortunately, I never used to leave money in the house and the only
thing that they could have taken would be my watch which I had left in
the bathroom. We all went to the bathroom only to find the watch there.
Mr Hassan remarked that burglars never imagined they could possibly
find anything valuable in a bathroom.

People have been writing about strange worlds and travelling to space
for thousands of years. Parts of the famous Arabic story “One Thousand
and One Nights” might be described as a kind of science fiction. But
science reality started to influence how we all lived in the nineteenth
century. This was a time when many exciting new things were invented:
steam trains, the telephone, electricity, photographs and much more. The
writer Jules Verne looked at nineteenth century technology and imagined
how it could be improved to do amazing things. He wrote about people
travelling to the centre of the earth, to the moon or deep under the sea.
Many people consider Verne to be the first true science fiction writer.
In 1895, the writer HG Wells saw technology differently. He wrote about
the possible dangers of technology. His book includes “The Time Machine”,
in which the hero travels into a dangerous and unpleasant future. Other
writers also thought that technology could be bad. “Aldous Huxley’s Brave
New World” is about a future in which people are produced in factories.
But not all science fiction writers saw technology as bad. Authors such as
Isaac Asimov often wrote about a future in which science can solve our
problems.
Science fiction has evolved with technology. In the 1960s, space was
being explored for the first time. This gave science fiction writers ideas
for what explorers might find in space. Strange worlds and unexplained
mysteries, such as in the novels of Arthur C. Clarke. More recently, many
science fiction stories have been about robots. Could they become more
intelligent than people? Should we use them or could they start to take
over and rule the world? In science fiction, anything is possible.

Have you ever eaten ice cream on a hot day and suddenly felt a sharp
pain in your head? If so, you had a very common experience that some
people call a “brain freeze”.
Brain freezes are caused when cold food or drink touches the roof of
your mouth. Nerves in your mouth send a signal to your brain. Your brain
then turns the signal into a sharp pain. However, the pain does not go to
your mouth where the cold is. It stays in your head.
Most brain freezes last for less than 30 seconds. But if you want to
make it go away quicker, you can try a couple of tricks. When you start to
get a brain freeze, push your tongue against the roof of your mouth. This
sometimes warms up your mouth so that the nerves don’t send the signal
that causes a headache. You can also try preventing brain freeze from the
start by eating and drinking more slowly. If you take smaller bites or sips
and wait longer between them, your mouth won’t get as cold. Of course,
sometimes a cold drink or an ice-cream cone on a hot day is just too good
to enjoy slowly!
Brain freezes also occur when we have to present or perform in front
of others but lack confidence - either in our ability to deliver the message
or in the message itself (or both). This is called “stage fright". If you want
to cure stage fright-and avoid the kind of brain freezes that happen when
public speaking anxiety controls you, prepare for both what you’re going
to say and how you’re going to say it.

People think children stay healthy while playing with others. However,
playing sports can have negative effects on children. It may produce
feelings of poor self-esteem or aggressive behavior in some children.
Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are
the main cause of too much aggression in children’s sports. They believe
children copy aggressive adult behavior. Parents and coaches are powerful
teachers because children usually look up to them. Often they behave
aggressively themselves, sending children the message that winning is
everything. At children’s sporting events, parents may yell insults at other
players or cheer when their child behaves aggressively. Moreover, children
may be taught that hurting other players is acceptable, or they may be
pushed to continue playing even when they are injured. Moreover, the
media makes violence seem exciting. Children watch adult sports games
and see violent behavior replayed over and over on television.
As a society, we really need to face up to this problem and do something
about it. Parents and coaches should act as better examples for children.
They also need to teach children better values. They should teach children
to enjoy themselves whether they win or not. Winning is not everything.
In addition, children should not be allowed to continue to play when they
are injured. Sending a child with an injury into a game gives the child
the message that health is not as important as winning, if we make some
basic changes, children might learn to enjoy sports again.

Rules are of extreme importance to all of us. Some people get bored
or object to one rule or another, but no one can deny that life would be
impossible without rules. Traffic rules are among the most important in
modern life. When you drive your car, there are many rules to follow. Your
car has to be in a good condition. You have to check the amount of petrol
in your car; otherwise, it may stop suddenly in the middle of a crowded
street causing you a lot of trouble. It is really essential that you adjust
the mirror to be sure that no one is parking behind you. Don’t forget to
measure the level of oil in your engine and be sure the battery is working
properly. The tyres should be checked before moving. If you neglect that,
you will have to face the trouble of changing the flat tyre by yourself. If
you don’t check your wipers, you will be sorry. It might rain suddenly and
spoil your trip. You have to check the brakes also or you will bang against
the first tree in front of you. Don’t forget to fasten your seat belts or you’ll
pay a fine. After all these precautions, do you still want to drive a car?

Trees are beautiful and useful gifts of nature. They are great friends
of man. Trees give us flowers, fruits, timber, bamboo, fuels, etc. We can
rest under the cool shade of a tree. We get wood from the trees to make
furniture, doors, windows, etc. Trees are also a great source of materials
for paper, rubber, gums, herbs and medicine plants. Forests bring clouds
and cause rainfall. Trees prevent soil erosion. They protect us from severe
weather. Trees are a part and parcel of earthly life. All life directly or
indirectly owes its existence to them. Trees release oxygen which we need
for our life. They also absorb carbon dioxide gas. Many living species live
in trees. Trees form the natural habitat of many animals, birds and insects.
Trees help make the land fertile. We get good crops out of fertile land.
They are the sources of the fruits and flowers. They offer us cool shade
during summer. During rainy season, we take shelter under trees. Trees
and plants are the sources of many life-saving drugs. They prevent land
erosion and guard us against pollution. Thus, trees keep up the ecological
balance. Trees protect us from inclement wind, too. Seeds, nuts and fruits
are food sources for humans and animals.
Trees protect the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Tree resins are used
in producing varnishes. Essential oils derived from trees are used in
medicinal and aroma industry. Thus, trees play an important role in our
life. Felling of trees disturbs the eco-system. We should preserve trees and
plants with great care.

Mona packed a small suitcase, said goodbye to her mother and hurried
out of the house to catch the bus to the station. There was no one else
waiting at the bus stop, so it looked as if a bus had just left. Mona looked
at her watch anxiously, she did not have much time to spare, even if a bus
came along at once. Just then a taxi came slowly down the road. Mona
knew that the fare to the station was at least two pounds, which was more
than she could afford; but she quickly made up her mind that it would be
well worth the extra expense in order to be sure of catching her train. So she
stopped the taxi and got in. She told the driver that she had to catch a train
which left at half past two. The man nodded and said that he would take
a short cut to get her to the station in good time. All went well until, just
as they were coming out of a side street into the main road that led to the
station, the taxi ran into a car. There was a loud crash and Mona was thrown
forward so violently that she hit her head on the front seat. Both drivers got
out and began shouting at each other. Mona got out as well, to ask them
to stop quarrelling, but neither of them took notice of her at all. She was
wondering what to do when a bus came into sight, going in the direction
of the station. The bus stop was not far off, so Mona got her suitcase out of
the taxi and ran towards the bus, which had stopped to let some passengers
get off. The bus conductor saw her running and did not ring the bell for the
bus to start until she had got on. Mona reached the station just in time and
managed to catch her train after all. But if she had waited for the taxi driver
to stop arguing, she would probably have missed it.

8 A lot of ................ around the world sent aid to the flood victims.
A small crowd had gathered around the entrance to the park. His
curiosity aroused, Robert crossed the road to see what was happening.
He found that the centre of attraction was an old man with a performing
monkey. The monkey’s tricks, he soon discovered, were in no way
remarkable so, after throwing a few pennies in the dirty hat which the
man had placed on the pavement, Robert began to move off, along with
other members of the crowd. At this point the man suddenly let out a loud
cry. Everyone turned to see what had happened. The man was bending
over his monkey, which now lay quite still on the pavement. He picked up
the apparently lifeless body and, holding it close to him, began to weep.
A young man stepped forward from the crowd and, taking some money
from his pocket, dropped it into the hat. Robert and several other people
did likewise, until the pennies in the hat were covered with silver coins.
Meanwhile, the man continued to hold the dead monkey in his arms and
seemed to take no notice of what was going on around him. A few months
later, Robert came across the old man again in another part of the city. The
man had a monkey, bought no doubt with the money which the crowd
had given him. It did not, however, seem any better at its tricks than the
previous one. Robert was pleased to see that the old man was still able to
earn a living, though on this occasion, having partly paid for the monkey
out of his own pocket, he did not feel inclined to throw any money into
the hat. But the performance was not yet over! Once again, the old man
let out a loud cry. Once again, the monkey lay still on the pavement. The
man picked up the “dead” monkey and clutching it in his arms began to
weep. The same young man stepped forward and threw some money
into the hat. Again, the crowd followed suit – except for Robert. Smiling
to himself, he went on his way, amazed at the man’s audacity.

Most people know that the first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong
in 1969. However, since that time, the moon has been visited by eleven
other men but they are not so famous. Who were these other space
pioneers?
In 1969, four months after Neil Armstrong and his colleague Buzz
Aldrin stayed on the surface of the moon for 21 hours, Alan Bean and
Pete Conrad spent two days there. Bean is also an artist, and is the only
person on earth who is able to paint space scenes that he had actually
seen. In 1971, Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchel went on a mission to study
earthquakes on the moon (known as moonquakes). Shepard also enjoyed
a game of golf there: because there is very little gravity, he hit the ball
farther than any professional golf player on earth!
Seven months later, two more astronauts stayed for nearly three days
on the moon. David Scott and James Irwin took along a special vehicle
which meant they could travel around. They returned to earth with many
moon rocks. In 1972, John Young and Charles Duke landed in the moon’s
mountains for the first time.
The moon was last visited at the end of 1972. Eugene Cernan and
Harrison Schmitt explored the moon for three days, longer than any other
astronaut. Schmitt was a geologist before he became an astronaut and
he did a number of scientific experiments there. Before they returned to
earth, Cernan wrote his daughter’s name on the moon’s surface. There is
no weather on the moon, so he knew that there was nothing that would
wear the letters away. They are probably there today! There are now plans
to get astronauts to visit the moon again, although nobody knows when
this might be.

When you cut your skin, you bleed. Everyone knows that. If a person
loses a great deal of blood, he will become ill and may die. At one time
people drank blood to make them strong. When doctors understood
how blood went around inside the body, they tried ways of giving blood
to people who needed it. They used a rubber tube to take blood from
healthy people and give it to people who needed it. This is called blood
transfusion. The blood went through a rubber tube from the arm of the
healthy person into the arm of the sick person.
But there were two problems. First it did not always work. Sometimes
people died. Later, doctors found the reason for this. We do not all have
the same kind of blood. There was another problem. To give blood of
the right kind, the doctors had to find a person of the right blood group.
Often, they could not find a person in time.
If they had a way to keep the blood until someone needed it, they
could always have the right kind of blood. In the end, they found a way of
keeping blood for a very long time. Now people can give or donate blood
every three months, if they want to. The blood is put in bottles and then
kept until someone needs it.

If you use the internet (and these days who doesn’t), you should be
aware of the risks you face and how to prevent being a victim of identity
theft. There are people out there who are scanning the internet to find
names, addresses and credit card numbers that they can use to take
something that isn’t rightfully theirs. These are a few tips that can help
make you a safer internet shopper.
First, only use your credit card with a trusted website: this means that
you should normally stick to reputable companies whose names you
recognise, and who have also been doing business for some time. If you
don’t recognise the company name, there are various lists and verifications
provided by independent organisations involved in keeping internet
shoppers secure. Check these out if you’re not sure before providing your
credit card information.
Second, make sure the website uses appropriate encryption technology:
even if the web company itself isn’t trying to rip you off, there are people
out there who are watching and who can still do harm if they intercept
your card number. lf the connection you are using is not secure, think
twice before shopping:
Third, check your credit card statements each month: even small
irregularities will sometimes mean that something is wrong. Thieves will
sometimes use your card to make a small purchase to see if you will report
this to your credit card company. If you don’t, they will then make a much
larger purchase.

The police find most criminals because somebody tells them who the
criminals are. They find other criminals by using science and computers.
When there is a bank robbery, the police first look through their computers
for the names of bank robbers they know. Then, they go and talk to any of
these robbers who are not in jail.
They ask them where they were at the time of the robbery. If any of
these people cannot give a good answer, the police often use science to
find out if one of them is the robber. Many criminals leave something of
themselves at the place of the crime, like dirt or animal hair. If they leave
behind some of their blood or a hair or a piece of skin, it will have their
DNA inside it.
Everyone’s DNA is different in the same way that their fingerprints are
different. Therefore, if a criminal cuts himself/herself during a robbery or
leaves a hair, or even a small piece of skin, scientists can find out what his/
her DNA is. The police can then ask the person they think is the robber to
give them one of his/her hairs or some blood and see if it has the same
DNA. Many criminals are in jail today because of this kind of evidence.
