Wall & Floor Penetration Fire Stops (FM Approval Class Number 4990)

Fire stops provide a fire resistant seal around electrical or mechanical service items that penetrate or pass through a fire resistant wall
or floor.
The performance of a fire stop is measured by subjecting it to a standard time-temperature fire exposure and hose stream according
to ASTM E 814. The hourly rating is established based on the period of resistance to the fire exposure while meeting the following
criteria:
1. Fire shall not propagate to the unexposed side of the fire stop, nor shall any visible flaming be observed.
2. The temperature measured by any individual thermocouple on the unexposed side of the fire stop material 1" from or in the field of
the penetration shall not exceed 325°F (163°C) above its initial temperature.
3. Following the fire exposure period, no opening shall develop that permits a projection of water beyond the unexposed surface
during a hose stream application to the stop.
Some designs have been evaluated for wall installations only, while others are for walls or floors.
Unless otherwise noted, the fire rating is applicable from either side of the fire stop. For floor installations, the fire rating applies when
the underside is exposed to fire.

FIRE STOP DESIGN 628
Rating – 1-1/2 HR

1. FLOOR ASSEMBLY. Min 8 in. (200 mm) thick reinforced lightweight or normal weight [100–150 lbs/ft3 (1600–2400 kg/m 3)]
concrete. Max area of the opening is 288 in.2 (0.19 m2) with no dimension exceeding 24 in. (600 mm).

2. CABLE TRAY. Max one 18 in. (460 mm) wide x max 4-1/2 in. (115 mm) deep open ladder cable tray with channel shaped side
rails formed of min 0.056 in. (1.4 mm) thick steel with 1 in. (25 mm) diameter flattened tube rungs spaced 9 in. (230 mm) on
center. One cable tray to be installed per opening. The annular space between the cable tray and the periphery of the opening
shall be a min 3 in. (75 mm). Cable tray to be rigidly supported on both sides of the floor or wall.

3. CABLES. Aggregate cross-sectional area of the cables in the cable tray to be a max 39% of the cross sectional area of the cable
tray based on a max 3 in. (75 mm) cable loading depth within the cable tray. The following type and size of copper conductor
cables may be used:
Type 1/C 350 kcmil, uninsulated with PVC jacket or cross linked polyethylene insulation with PVC jacket (max 5 cables per tray,
evenly distributed).
Type 3/C No. 2 AWG with PVC insulation and PVC jacket.
Type 7/C No. 12 AWG with PVC insulation and PVC jacket.
Type 7/C No. 14 AWG with PVC insulation and PVC jacket.

4. a. Packing Material. Minimum 1 in. (25 mm) thickness of min 15 pcf (240 kg/m3) ceramic fiber board firmly friction fitted into the
opening as a permanent form and located flush with the bottom surface of the floor to prevent fill material leakage. Board
shall be installed in one continuous piece and supported lengthwise by two light gauge metal straps bolted on each end to the
concrete floor surface with min 3/16 in. (5 mm) diameter by 1 in. (25 mm) long steel concrete anchors.

b. Foam. Min 7 in. (180 mm) thickness of fill material applied within the annulus flush with the top surface of the floor. Two part
foam shall be mixed in accordance with the installation instructions provided with the product.
