1 Scope
This standard identifies acceptable commodities for Wastewater Treatment Equipment

Class 32 materials.
2 Conflicts and Deviations
2.1 Any conflicts between this standard and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Engineering Standards (SAESs), Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or buyer representative through the
Manager, Environmental Protection Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this standard in writing to the Company or
Buyer representative, who shall forward such requests to the Manager,
Environmental Protection Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran. The EPD
Manager shall follow internal Company procedure SAEP-133 to process the
request.

4 Definitions
9COM Material #: Commodity material number.
Acceptable: Approval is not required to place a purchase order for the product.
After the order has been placed, the Supplier of this product must ensure that he
complies with all aspects of the purchasing contract (e.g., must meet the Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specification).
Approval: Written authorization by the Manager, Environmental Protection

Department, Saudi Aramco, Dhahran. He shall approve revisions to the RVL standards
and the SAP-based RVLs, and shall also approve manufacturers on a one- time basis.

License Agreement: A contract between a Supplier and an owner of rights to an

equipment design, allowing a Supplier to either (1) assemble the equipment using all
the pieces provided by the design owner or (2) assemble the eqipment using a
combination of pieces provided by the design owner and pieces manufactured by the
licensee to the design owner’s deatailed drawings/specifications. The contract between
the licensor and licensee would (1) require the licensee to follow the licensor
manufacturing procedures and be routinely audited by the licensor for compliance and
(2) require the equipment to be marked and labeled using the licensor’s brand name.
Made: Created from raw materials and/or assembled by the manufacturer.
Manufacturer: The Manufacturer is the organization that constructs all or a

component part of the 9 Comm equipment. All companies constructing component
pieces or supplying the subcomponent equipment must be an Aramco approved
Supplier (for example all valves, pumps, instruments and any other component pieces of
a final product must be from Saudi Aramco approved Suppliers). The Manufacturer can
be either (1) the owner of the brand name of the equipment or (2) a licensee that has a
license agreement to construct this equipment under the direction of the Approved
Supplier (the Approved Supplier is responsible to guarantee this equipment as if they
had constructed it themselves).
SAMSS: “Saudi Aramco Materials System Specification”
SAP: The Saudi Aramco corporate computer system that includes description of the
wastewater treatment equipment commodities and List of currently approved
manufacturers.
Supplier: The person/company, etc., who is responsible to provide the equipment to

Saudi Aramco.
5 General
5.1 Procurement of a product made by a manufacturer not listed as an approved

manufacturer in Saudi Aramco SAP system is not allowed without approval.
Requests for approval of an alternate manufacturer must be supported by
documentation identifying how the alternate manufacturer would better serve
Saudi Aramco over the approved manufacturers.
Commentary Note:
If the request to procure from an alternate manufacturer is not approved, the

approval authority is under no obligation to present the reasons for the refusal.
5.2 The manufacturer listings within Saudi Aramco SAP system should be
interpreted in the following manner:

5.2.1 Manufacturer listed without limitation: All products from the

manufacturer in the given category (9COM material and, if applicable,
SAMSS) are acceptable.
5.2.2 Manufacturer listed with a limitation: Only the product that meets the
limitation is acceptable. If noted as being manufactured “Under
License”, only products made under the terms of the license agreement
are acceptable.
5.2.3 Manufacturer listed with a specific location: Only products made in the
specific location(s) or area(s) are acceptable.

wastewater in the aeration basins, tanks, and ponds needed for the biological treatment
of wastewater.

AERATION SYSTEM-VENTURI AERATORS: A jet aerator is an aspirating device,
works by the principle of venturi effect to add oxygen into wastewater.

BELT FILTER PRESSES SANITARY SLUDGE DEWATERING: Belt Filter Presses,
machines that increase the solids of 1.0% aerobically digested activated sludge to 25%

CONTROL, WASTEWATER ODOR (ACTIVATED CARBON): Carbon filter that
uses adsorption process onto porous activated carbon surface used to remove air
contaminants that cause odor in wastewater collection and treatment streams.

DEWATERING
DECANTER CENTRIFUGES SANITARY SLUDGE DEWATERING: Decanter
centrifuges machines that increase the solids of 1.0% aerobically digested activated
sludge to 25 % by mechanical centrifuge separation.
Equipment Description: ODOR CONTROL-CHEMICAL SCRUBBER

ODOR CONTROL-CHEMICAL SCRUBBER: Chemical counter current scrubbers
(acid and caustic wet scrubbing) removes air contaminants such as hydrogen sulfide and
other reduced sulfur compounds, and Ammonia and other nitrogen compounds that
cause odor in wastewater collection and treatment, by mass transfer absorption via
contact of the air stream with aqueous solution in the scrubbing chamber.

OFFSHORE WASTEWATER TREATMENT-MACERATION: A crusher, a
shredding, a grinder machine, a chopper pump that reduces solids in the wastewater to
small pieces prior to discharging to the marine environment. The treated wastewater
shall not produce visible floating solids or cause discoloration of the surrounding water.

FLOTATION (DAF) / INDUCED AIR FLOTATION (IAF)

OIL/WATER SEPARATION-DISSOLVED AIR FLOTATION (DAF) / INDUCED
AIR FLOTATION (IAF): Secondary oil / water vessel to separate non-dissolved or
emulsified oil and solids from oil water by gravity. Induced Gas Flotation (IGF) /
Dissolved Gas Flotation (DGF) use gas bubbles to remove oil droplets and suspended
solids not removed by primary water treatment.
Equipment Description: OIL/WATER-OIL SKIMMERS

OIL/WATER-OIL SKIMMERS: a drum or disk surface oil skimmer machine that
removes surface oils floating on oily water rely on adhesion of oil to the surface of the
mechanism.
Equipment Description: OILY WASTEWATER CENTRIFUGAL

OILY WASTEWATER CENTRIFUGE: Disc stack centrifuges, Centrifuge Decanters,
and Tricanters 3-phase separation. They separate water and solids from the oil in
mixtures of immiscible liquids by mechanical separation using centrifugal force.
Equipment Description: OILY WASTEWATER FILTERS-WALNUT SHELL MEDIA

OILY WASTEWATER FILTERS-WALNUT SHELL MEDIA: A deep bed nutshell
filter of 100% black walnut shells designed to remove oily contaminants from oily
water. The scrubbing mechanism for removing the oil from the walnut shells shall use
either an external scrubber or an internal scrubber technology that does not require entry
into the vessel to perform routine maintenance.
Equipment Description: OILY WASTEWATER MULTIMEDIA FILTERS

OILY WASTEWATER MULTIMEDIA FILTERS: A deep bed filter that uses multiple
selected grades of media - coarse anthracite / sand, etc., to remove the bulk of the solids
and some of the insoluble oil from oily water.

Equipment Description: OILY WATER API SEPARATORS

OILY WATER API SEPARATORS: Primary elevated rectangular tanks that separate
free oil from water by gravity and separates oily sludge and solids from water by chain
and flight scrapers. They shall not include auxiliary plate packs. The Design shall be as
per SAES-A-104, Section 8.1.2 requirements.
Equipment Description: OILY WATER INCLINED PLATES INTERCEPTORS

OILY WATER INCLINED PLATES INTERCEPTORS: Gravity separators Corrugated
Plate Interceptors (CPI) contain CPI Pack for removing oil and suspended solids from
oily wastewaters where the oily wastewater being treated contains very small
concentrations of solids and oily sludge. The Design shall be as per SAES-A-104,
Section 8.1.2 requirements and include an equalization tank upstream of the CPI
separator.
Equipment Description: PRELIMINARY TREATMENT- MECHANICAL COARSE

BAR SCREEN
PRELIMINARY TREATMENT - MECHANICAL COARSE BAR SCREEN: Step
inclined screens that have 20mm screen openings as the first step in the Preliminary
Treatment located at headworks of wastewater treatment plants. It removes coarse and
bulky material and therefore protects downstream equipment.
Equipment Description: PRELIMINARY TREATMENT-DEGRITTER

PRELIMINARY TREATMENT-DEGRITTER: Aerated or vortex grit chambers with
mechanical grit removal, grit washing and classifying equipment, level sensors, and
flushing and fluidizing facilities located in the headworks of wastewater treatment
plants.
Equipment Description: PRELIMINARY TREATMENT-FINE SCREEN

PRELIMINARY TREATMENT-FINE SCREEN: Perforated, step, wedgewire, and
rotary screens that have 6 mm screen openings for conventional treatment or 1-3 mm
screen openings for Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) plants located after the degritters.

PRELIMINARY TREATMENT-SANITARY WASTEWATER GRINDER:
comminuting devices that reduce the size of solids to less than 6 mm located after the
bar screens and upstream of the grit removal chambers in the headworks of wastewater
treatment plants.
Equipment Description: SANITARY WASTEWATER FILTERS

SANITARY WASTEWATER FILTERS: Tertiary filters that have California Title 22
Certification for water reuse, which will produce effluent quality suitable for
unrestricted reuse applications.
Equipment Description: SANITARY WASTEWATER PACKAGE TREATMENT PLANT

SANITARY WASTEWATER PACKAGE TREATMENT PLANT: a prefabricated
complete conventional activated sludge biological sanitary wastewater treatment system
that complies with SAES-A-104 requirements.
Equipment Description: TANKS, AND FABRICATION PLANTS ALL WASTEWATER

TANKS AND FABRICATION PLANTS ALL WASTEWATER: Assembly of the
wastewater main equipment (API, Corrugated Plate Interceptors (CPI), Membrane
Bioreactor (MBR), etc.) manufacturer’s package including atmospheric steel tanks for
wastewater applications.
Equipment Description: UNIT, OILY WASTEWATER MEMBRANE BIO REACTORS

UNIT, OILY WASTEWATER MEMBRANE BIO REACTORS: An advanced low-
pressure membrane biological treatment system producing effluent quality that meets
Reverse Osmosis (RO) pretreatment requirements. The main system components have
to be manufactured by the approved vendor and they consist of the anoxic, aerobic, and
sludge collection/aerobic digester tanks, the membrane operating system and the
associated piping, controls, instrumentation, and pumps. Any major or supplemental
component if not manufactured by the approved vendor has to be purchased from a
Saudi Aramco’s approved suppliers. The membranes shall be submerged membranes.
Cross flow membranes are not acceptable. The Design shall be as per SAES-A-104,

Section 9.4 requirements.
Equipment Description: UNIT, SANITARY WASTEWATER MEMBRANE BIO

REACTORS
UNIT, SANITARY WASTEWATER MEMBRANE BIO REACTORS: An advanced

UNIT, WASTEWATER DISINFECTION-CHLORINATION: A skid mounted system
to introduce chlorine compounds, sodium hypochlorite, in liquid or solid forms to the
water or wastewater, generally for the purpose of disinfection, or chemical oxidation
and odor control. The unit shall include a day tank, metering pumps (including standby
pumps), piping, instrumentation, and local control panel that can automatically or
manually control the chlorine based on a dose set point or flow rate.
Equipment Description: UNIT, WASTEWATER PRELIMINARY TREATMENT

UNIT, WASTEWATER PRELIMINARY TREATMENT: Combination of Preliminary
treatment units; grinder, grit removal, FOG removal, and fine screen for small flow
wastewater treatment plants.
Equipment Description: UNIT. WASTEWATER AERATION (DIFFUSERS)

UNIT, WASTEWATER AERATION (DIFFUSERS): Air Diffusers also known as
bubble diffusers used for the addition of oxygen to wastewater in the lower part at the
aeration tanks or basins needed for the biological treatment of wastewater. Materials
of construction shall be appropriate for the salinity of the wastewater being treated.
Only coarse bubble diffusers are acceptable for use in Saudi Aramco because of the
high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) wastewater and the carbonate sand that is mixed

with all wastewater in Saudi Arabia. Other types of diffusers shall be reviewed in a
case by case uses. Approval of alternative diffusers shall be prepared and submitted to
the General Supervisor, Environmental Engineering Division (EED) for approval.
A letter of approval, signed by the General Supervisor, EED, shall be included as an
attachment to the project specifications.
Equipment Description: WASTEWATER DISINFECTION-ELECTROLYSIS

WASTEWATER DISINFECTION-ELECTROLYSIS: Seawater electrochlorination
systems produce disinfecting agent sodium hypochlorite from seawater due to an
electric current being passed through the water for marine and offshore applications.
Equipment Description: WASTEWATER FLOW DISTRIBUTION DEVICES

WASTEWATER FLOW DISTRIBUTION DEVICES: Normally, concrete splitter
boxes that include Downward Opening Weir Gates to distribute the wastewater flow
into downstream wastewater equipment placed in parallel. Downward Opening Weir
Gates are used for flow and/or level control in applications where water flows over the
gate. Downward Opening Weir Gates have a reinforced slide and are solidly built in
one piece for easy installation.
Equipment Description: WASTEWATER MIXERS, STATIC, SLOW RAPID

WASTEWATER MIXERS, STATIC, SLOW RAPID: Vertical or side mixers for
wastewater process applications.
Equipment Description: WASTEWATER ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR

WASTEWATER ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR: A Rotating Biological
Contactor (RBC) is an attached growth, aerobic, biological wastewater treatment
process. An RBC consists of a series of closely spaced circular disks that are
submerged in wastewater and rotated through it with a mechanical drive. As the RBC
disks rotate out of the wastewater, aeration is accomplished by exposure to the
atmosphere. Wastewater flows down through the disks where biological treatment and
solids sloughing occurs.

Equipment Description: WASTEWATER SLUICE GATES

WASTEWATER SLUICE GATES: A sluice gate is a valve used at the end of a pipe
line or to cover an opening in a wall and is not an in-line valve. Sluice gates are raised
and lowered by means of a stem or a rod using a manually operated screw stem hoist, an
electrically driven screw stem hoist or a hydraulic cylinder. Sluice gates are mounted to
a pipe flange, to a wall casting or thimble embedded in the concrete. Sluice gates are
not normally used in open channels where slide gates are normally used for seating flow
conditions. Slide gates are not acceptable for use in tank walls and cannot be
substituted for sluice gates.
